Dear Food Day Educator,
Food Day is a nationwide celebration of healthy, affordable, and sustainably produced food and a
grassroots campaign for better food policies. It builds all year long and culminates on October 24.
In 2012, thousands of schools across the country participated in Food Day with a variety of activities
including using the Food Day curriculum in the classroom, taste tests introducing children to new
and healthy options, and health fairs.
Designed for upper elementary and middle school students, the curriculum offers five lessons
to teach children the importance of eating real, fresh food, cutting back on processed foods, and
advocating for a healthier community. The lessons can be easily adapted for older or younger
students. We encourage you to teach the lessons in sequence on the week of October 24 in
celebration of Food Day, but you can also use them individually and at any time.
Teaching these lessons will be a rewarding experience for you and your students. Your students
will be motivated to follow the Food Day Eating Goals of “Eat Real,” “Mostly Plants,” and “Not
Too Much.” Your students will learn how to navigate through the food environment to find real
food. And, you and your students will work together to become advocates who change the food
environment and make it easier for everyone in your community to Eat Real.
Please visit www.foodday.org to register your participation on our national map! If you have any
questions or comments about these lessons please contact the staff at Food Day’s national office at
