B) REFERENCE AND INFORMATION SERVICES<br />

1. Reference Service<br />

<strong>Library</strong> users who are looking for library materials for research purposes are advised to consult the librarian at<br />

the Customer Service Room. Users can discuss with the librarian to get some guidance on the information<br />

searching techniques based on the users’ needs. The librarian will identify the exact needs of the users before<br />

suggesting relevant information resources. Reference Service is opened to all users within library opening<br />

hours.<br />

2. Information Skills Class<br />

Information Skill Class is a guidance program specifically on library services and facilities usage. The librarian<br />

will conduct the class on a specified date in every semester. The discussion topics include materials searching<br />

techniques through the library catalogue and information searching through the online databases.<br />

By attending this class, users will be given the opportunity to apply the searching technique with guidance<br />

from the librarian.<br />

3. Interlibrary Loan (ILL)<br />

Interlibrary Loan Service is a service that allows users to borrow library materials that are unavailable in <strong>UTHM</strong><br />

<strong>Library</strong> but can be obtained from other local academic libraries and British <strong>Library</strong>. Reference materials that can<br />

be borrowed through this service are books, journal articles and conference proceedings and standards. The<br />

service is free of charge. The length of borrowing period is subject to the rules imposed by the supplying<br />

library. Users are required to fill in an ILL Application Form available at the Circulation Counter. Users will be<br />

informed about the status of the application through e-mail or telephone.<br />

4. Selective Dissemination of Information<br />

Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) service that available at the library consists of Latest Journal<br />

Content Page and New Arrivals Listing Dissemination. The Latest Journal Contents Page Dissemination service<br />

is particularly for academic staff in which the selected digital journal content pages will be composed directly<br />

to the inbox of respective requesters’ e-mail. Whereas the New Arrivals Listing Dissemination service is provided<br />

to give alert or current awareness to the users by compiling and publishing the listing of new materials<br />

received. This listing is arranged by faculty and distributed to both students and staff.<br />
