WELCOMING WORDS BY THE CHIEF LIBRARIAN Assalamualaikum wbt wbr and Good Day, In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious and the Most Merciful. Praise be to Him, Lord of the Universe, and Prayers and Peace be upon His Final Prophet and Messenger, Muhammad S.A.W. First and foremost, on behalf of the UTHM Library, it is a great pleasure to extend warmth welcome to all new students and staff to this University. We also welcome you to our new library building, which has been completely built February this year. Since then, the building is now open to the public, especially to those who are seeking knowledge. Thus, in order to be in line with the motto of the university, that is “With Wisdom We Explore”, the library plays a vital role to generate wisdom amongst the university’s community through exploration of knowledge. Since the library is known as the focal point of knowledge, it is hoped that the new building will offer the community conduciveness as well as tranquility. What is important for us is how to give an excellent information service to our users which is valuable them. I am strongly believed that if new users are happy with our services, they will come back again and again. The higher the level of satisfaction a customer has is one of the determining factors in the success of any business. No wonder why Peter Drucker once said: “The result of a business is a satisfied customer.” Therefore, this Library Guide will always be available by your side to help you exploring the building. Feel free to make your library as your best friends for life. Finally, I am taking this opportunity to give a special acknowledgement to the Library Publication Committee, for their endless effort, commitment and steadfastness in making this library guide a reality. I pray to Allah that this handbook will give us a new perspective and dimension towards the interest of gaining knowledge. Thank you. LIBRARY HISTORY The library began its first operation on 1st October 1993, when UTHM was initially known as Pusat Latihan Staf Politeknik (PLSP). With a collection of 5,000 copies of book inherited from the Politeknik Batu Pahat, the PLSP Library occupied a small two-storey building that could accommodate up to 120 users. Its mission was to support academic staff and students in learning, teaching and research. To support the increasing number of users, the library building has been extended to provide more reading area in year 2000. The extension includes increasing the floor space for reading to 200 seats. With the opening of a new library branch at the Town Campus in 2004, and B5 Library (which is located above the Bursary Office) in 2006, the seating capacity has been greatly increased to 500 seats. Collections in the B5 Library consist of journals, magazines, thesis, audio visuals, novels, maps, prospectuses, examination papers and references. In July 2008, the Town Campus Library was transferred to a new building to support more collections, provide more reading area, consequently give better services. The collections in the Town Campus Library cater the needs of the Faculty of Technology Management, Faculty of Technical Education and Faculty of Information Technology and Multimedia. The improvement of library collection in various fields, especially in science and technology, has been intensified to support the learning, teaching and research activities. Currently the library has acquired about 170,000 volumes of monographs, 6,000 titles of thesis, 400 titles of journal, 50 titles of magazine and 13,000 copies of audio-visual materials. The library has also subscribed 26 online databases and 3 e-books services. Beginning May 2010, UTHM Library will move to a new building. This building has 16,000 square meters of floor area and can fill as many as 300,000 volumes of collections. The new library building has a seating capacity of 2,400 users and it provides a spacious and condusive study environment with 100 carrel rooms, a post graduate research room, 40 discussion rooms, 2 seminar rooms, an auditorium and a 24 hours reading room. With the library move to the new building, the Town Campus Library will be closing its operation and all the collections will be transferred to the new UTHM Library. In terms of technology improvement, the library automation project has begun since 1997 to provide better and faster services. 3
