CL 237 Catholic Medical Ethics (also LPS<br />

344)<br />

This course explores the field of health<br />

care and the Roman Catholic reflection on<br />

various issues in medical ethics. After<br />

exploring different models of biomedical<br />

ethics, the course will examine specific<br />

topics and principles of Catholic medical<br />

ethics, including respect for human dignity,<br />

the principles of double effect and<br />

cooperation, respect for the rights of<br />

conscience for healthcare workers and<br />

the like. <strong>The</strong> topics include issues such<br />

as the nature of medicine; human<br />

suffering; embryonic stem cell research;<br />

embryo adoption; euthanasia and<br />

physician assisted suicide; artificialnutrition<br />

and hydration; and the distinction<br />

between ordinary and extraordinary<br />

care. Prerequisites: CL 230 or LPS 403.<br />

CL 307 <strong>The</strong> Moral <strong>The</strong>ology of Saint<br />

Alphonsus<br />

<strong>The</strong> course examines the moral theology<br />

of Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori<br />

(1696-1787), patron of moral theologians<br />

and confessors. <strong>The</strong> course examines<br />

the historical context in which his moral<br />

theology developed and the competing<br />

moral systems of his day (probabilism,<br />

probabiliorism, and his own equiprobabilism)<br />

and the relevance of such<br />

systems for the moral problems of<br />

contemporary society. Special attention<br />

will be given to Alphonsus’ treatment of<br />

conscience, found in his <strong>The</strong>ologia<br />

Moralis. Prerequisites: CL 230 or LPS<br />

CL 322 Spiritual Direction (Also PA 330)<br />

Not intended as a certification course for<br />

spiritual directors, this course serves as<br />

an introduction to the tradition and practice<br />

of Christian spiritual direction. <strong>The</strong> course<br />

looks at the direction relationship,<br />

examines the elements of an evocativecontemplative<br />

approach to spiritual<br />

direction based primarily upon the<br />

Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, and<br />

provides some personal, supervised<br />

experience of the art of spiritual direction,<br />

both as a director and as a directee.<br />

Prerequisites: An Introduction to<br />

Spirituality or permission of professor.<br />

CL 382 Modern Moral Problems<br />

This course will be taught seminar style.<br />

Each student will do research and present<br />

his or her research findings to the class in<br />

written form. <strong>The</strong> topics for research will<br />

explore timely issues within the Catholic<br />

Church as it finds itself within the American<br />

ethos. <strong>The</strong> topics are: the death penalty,<br />

bioethics issues such as cloning, and<br />

medical issues such as physician-assisted<br />

suicide and euthanasia. We will also<br />

address issues brought up by students.<br />

Methodologically, we will set up a dialogue<br />

between the wisdom of the Catholic<br />

Tradition and the American cultural ethos<br />

with an eye to formulating an informed<br />

pastoral response. Prerequisites: CL<br />

230 or LPS 403, CL 236, CL 237.<br />
