Overview of the Old Testament studies the<br />
geographic and cultural background from<br />
which the literary record of the Hebrew<br />
faith experience emerged and grew. In<br />
this context the literature of Pentateuch,<br />

*LPB 302 New Testament Scriptures<br />
A brief overview of the New Testament<br />
world, followed by an introduction to the<br />
various writings that comprise the New<br />
Testament (who wrote them, where, when<br />
and why), to the thought expressed by<br />
these writings and to the process by<br />
which they were gathered together to<br />
form the New Testament. (Callan, 3<br />

*LPH 302 Church History: Key Issues and<br />
Eras<br />
A survey of the development of the<br />
Church from 70 A.D. to the 20th century.<br />
Particular attention will be paid to the<br />
distinguishing characteristics of the Church<br />
in each of the major eras of its history:<br />
from its theological self-understanding to its<br />
institutional expression. <strong>The</strong> unifying focus<br />
of this course will be the history of the<br />
Church’s self-understanding and the<br />
formation and development of structures to<br />

This course focuses upon the people skills<br />
required of ministers if they are to<br />
communicate effectively in any pastoral<br />
situation but especially in stressful<br />
situations. Skills are explained, demonstrated,<br />
and practiced in each of four major<br />
course content areas: 1) reflective<br />
listening, 2) assertion, 3) problem solving,<br />
and 4) conflict management. <strong>The</strong><br />
personal spirituality of the pastoral minister<br />
is presented as the foundation upon<br />
which these interpersonal communication<br />
skills and competencies are based and<br />
