<strong>Making</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>PYP</strong> <strong>happen</strong><br />

All in all, an exemplary <strong>PYP</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matics programme consists of a very active and busy community of<br />

learners, with <strong>the</strong> teacher constantly finding ways to combine <strong>the</strong> students’ needs and interests, and <strong>the</strong><br />

goals of <strong>the</strong> curriculum, in engaging and relevant tasks.<br />

Why is a <strong>PYP</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matics classroom <strong>the</strong> way it is<br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>matics is a language which is used to describe <strong>the</strong> natural world. Students of today need to build an<br />

understanding of previously made discoveries as well as discover and describe <strong>the</strong>ir own ma<strong>the</strong>matical<br />

ideas. Traditionally, ma<strong>the</strong>matical knowledge has been disassembled in schools.<br />

Our vastly expanded knowledge base about learning ma<strong>the</strong>matics, however, tells us that, in fact, people<br />

assemble, or construct, ma<strong>the</strong>matical knowledge. This requires us to look at ma<strong>the</strong>matics not as a fixed<br />

body of knowledge to be transmitted but as a language and a way of thinking. It is our task as teachers to<br />

facilitate this process.<br />

How is ma<strong>the</strong>matics connected<br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>matics, like language, can largely be seen as a service discipline to o<strong>the</strong>r parts of <strong>the</strong> curriculum—<br />

providing tools, symbolic language and ways of thinking to <strong>the</strong> scientist and social scientist.<br />

Ma<strong>the</strong>matics is also a fascinating discipline in its own right. It is <strong>the</strong> joy and satisfaction of solving<br />

problems and finding patterns that has captured and stimulated <strong>the</strong> most creative minds throughout <strong>the</strong> ages.<br />
