Updates
IMPORTANT LEGAL UPDATES
A. CHILD ABUSE INVESTIGATIONS
A recent Ninth Circuit case, Greene v. Camreta (9 th Cir. 2009) 588 F.3d 1011, held
that it was illegal for a CPS worker and law enforcement officer to jointly conduct an
in-school interview of a suspected victim of child abuse without a warrant, court
order, parental consent or exigent circumstances. Based on this case, the District
has adopted a new protocol that you shall use when (1) a CPS worker comes to
school to interview a student about suspected child abuse; or (2) a law enforcement
officer comes to school to interview a student about child abuse; or (3) a CPS worker
and a law enforcement officer come together to interview a student about child
abuse.
New Protocol: In each of these cases, you shall require the CPS worker or law
enforcement officer to fill out and sign the attached form. In order to interview
the student, the CPS worker or police officer must fill out the form, check one of the
applicable boxes (court order or warrant, parental consent, or exigent
circumstances), and must sign and date the form. Please keep a record of the form
in a separate file. Do not place the form in the student’s cum folder.
B. MANDATORY POLICE REPORTS
The 2009-2010 Student Handbook (page 120) provides a list of student offenses
that require mandatory notification of the police. In October 2009, state law was
amended to add 2 new types of conduct that require police notification. These 2
offenses also require notification of school security or the SRO. These 2 new types
of conduct are:
1. Possession, sale or furnishing a firearm on a school site by a student or
nonstudent;
2. Possession of an explosive on a school site by a student or nonstudent.
This information will be added to next year’s Student Handbook. Please make a
note of these additions in your copy of the 2009-2010 Handbook. Thank you.
Early Assessment Program
High School Senior
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Early Assessment Program
The Early Assessment Program (EAP) is an
academic preparation program to help high school
students meet college readiness standards in English
language arts and mathematics before admission to
any of the 23 CSU campuses. EAP results may be
used to validate the ELM and/or EPT placement test
requirements.
When do I receive my EAP test results
Your EAP results are included in the STAR Report,
which is mailed home addressed to your parent
and/or guardian in August. EAP results are located
on the second page of the STAR report in the
bottom left hand corner. If you released your scores
to the CSU, you will also be able to view your
results online at www.calstate.edu/eap/results
Can I retake the EAP exam
No. The EAP is only given one time during the
CST’s during the eleventh grade in High School.
How do I release my EAP scores to the CSU
Your scores were automatically released to the CSU
if you filled in the release bubble at the end of the
STAR exam during your junior year.
What are the EAP results and what do they
mean
Ready for CSU College Level English and/or Math
Courses: You’ve meet the CSU placement standards
for entry-level baccalaureate coursework. You are
exempt from CSU required EPT (English Placement
Test) and/or ELM (Entry-Level Mathematics) if you
apply to a CSU and are admitted.
Not Yet Demonstrating Readiness for CSU college
Level English and/or Math Courses: This status
means you are not ready for college-level
coursework and are encouraged to enroll in a senior
year activity to increase their English writing and/or
mathematics skills in preparation for the EPT/ELM
exams.
Mathematics Only:
Ready for CSU College Level Math Courses -
Conditional
If you received this designation you are encouraged
to participate in an approved senior year experience.
Students who successfully participate in an
approved senior year experience will become
exempt from the requirement to take CSU’s ELM
test and will be eligible to enroll in baccalaureatelevel
Mathematics courses if they apply to a CSU
and are admitted.
What approved senior year classes may I take if
I received a conditionally exempt status in
mathematics
a. You can successfully complete with a grade
of C or better a one year math course that
has an Algebra II prerequisite (e.g. Precalculus,
Trigonometry, Math Analysis, etc.)
b. You can repeat Algebra II for a second time
during your senior year with the approval of
the high school and earn a grade of C or
better.
c. Pass a one semester community college
mathematics course that satisfies the CSU
general education requirement.
d. Complete a math course developed by the
high school with the approval of the CSU
Mathematics Faculty Validation Committee
If I am completing a senior year experience do I
need to inform the CSU of the course I am
taking
No. Official transcripts will be reviewed in June by
the Admissions Office to validate successful
completion of an approved course.
What if I receive a ‘conditionally exempt’
designation but I do not do any additional
coursework
If you are not exempt on the basis of SAT, ACT or
AP scores, you will have to take and pass the ELM.
If you do not pass the ELM, you will be required to
take remedial coursework at the CSU.

I misplaced my EAP assessment status report,
where can I request a copy
If you have released your exam results to the CSU,
you can view an electronic version of your report by
at www.calstate.edu/eap/results. If you did not
release your scores you may request a duplicate
EAP report from ETS at EAPDups@ets.org.
Reports are generated on Friday and request must
include student’s full name, date of birth, full high
school name, and city in which high school is
located.
What are other ways of avoiding the CSU’s
English and mathematics placement exams in
addition to the EAP tests
You do not have to take the CSU’s English and
mathematics placement exams if you present proof
to the CSU of one of the following:
English Proficiency
A score of 550 or above on the critical
reading section of College Board SAT
Reasoning Test
A score of 24 or above on the ACT English
Test
A score of 3, 4, or 5 on either the Language
and Composition or Literature and
Composition examination of the Advanced
Placement Program
Completion and transfer to the CSU of a
college course that satisfies the CSU General
Education requirement in English
Composition, with a grade of C or better
Mathematics Proficiency
A score of 550 or above on the mathematics
section of the College Board SAT Reasoning
Test
A score of 23 or above on the ACT
Mathematics Test
A score of 3, 4, or 5 on the College Boards
Advanced Placement Calculus AB, Calculus
BC, or Statistics examination
Completion and transfer to the CSU of a
college course that satisfies the requirement in
Quantitative Reasoning, with a grade of C or
better
file if you released your EAP scores during your
junior year. Ready for College level status will
exempt you from the ELM.
What is the English Placement Test (EPT)
requirement
The EPT is the English placement test you must
take before entering the CSU in order to know what
classes you are eligible to take. This test costs $18,
it is given on a Saturday and it takes about 2 ½
hours. You must go to a CSU campus to take the
EPT during your senior year.
What is the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM)
Exam requirement
The ELM is the mathematics placement test you
must take before entering the CSU in order to know
what classes you are eligible to take. This test costs
$18 it is given on a Saturday and it takes about 1 ½
hours. You must go to a CSU campus to take the
ELM during your senior year.
Where can I find free ELM and EPT practice
questions
You can find free ELM and EPT questions by
visiting www.csuenglishsuccess.org and
www.csumathsuccess.org. You can also find video
testimonials of students telling you their experience
in remediation courses.
Where can I find more information about EAP
You can find more information about EAP by
visiting our website www.calstate.edu/EAP
Campuses of the California State University
Who sees my EAP test results
Your results are confidential, so only you and your
parents/guardians see the results. In some cases,
high school administrators use the EAP results in
guiding students. If you are accepted to a CSU, your
scores are automatically upload into your student

• How to run an effective SAP w/ given resources
3) Meaningful Data Collection
• Need to make it as easy as possible to collect the data—one program
• Need student data that includes:
o Student Picture
o Why student comes to see us
