ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS<br />
<strong>McMaster</strong> <strong>University</strong> must make aplication prior to March 1 directly to<br />
<strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Social Work.<br />
Applicants transferring from ano<strong>the</strong>r university should consult Twotier<br />
Applications in <strong>the</strong> section Faculty <strong>of</strong> Social Sciences, School <strong>of</strong><br />
Social Work.<br />
PROGRAMME TRANSFER AFrER ADMISSION<br />
If you have been admitted to one programme and subsequently wish to<br />
transfer to ano<strong>the</strong>r, you may be able to do so, provided you have met<br />
<strong>the</strong> subject requirements for <strong>the</strong> second programme and a place is available.<br />
If you wish to make such a transfer, consult <strong>the</strong> Admissions <strong>Office</strong>.<br />
Admission With O<strong>the</strong>r<br />
Qualifications<br />
A. ADMISSION FROM ONTARIO COLLEGES OF APPLIED<br />
ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY<br />
Applicants from Colleges <strong>of</strong> Applied Arts and Technology who have<br />
completed at least one year <strong>of</strong> work, are invited to apply for admission<br />
to Social Sciences I or Humanities 1. Each case will be considered individually<br />
on its merits and <strong>the</strong> programme desired. In Social SCiences,<br />
Humanities, and Business advanced credit will normally be given to<br />
well-qualified students who have completed at least two years <strong>of</strong> work.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> granting <strong>of</strong> credit attention will be given to:<br />
1. <strong>the</strong> applicant's performance in <strong>the</strong> college programme;<br />
2. <strong>the</strong> duration <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> previous pr:ogramme;<br />
3. <strong>the</strong> programm~ taken at <strong>the</strong> college and <strong>the</strong> programme to which<br />
entry is sought;<br />
4. <strong>the</strong> applicant's secondary school record.<br />
The credit could be up to 30 units for a weB-qualified graduate <strong>of</strong> a<br />
three-year programme, and at least 6 units for an applicant who has<br />
completed two years and performed well, provided <strong>the</strong> coBege work is<br />
appropriate for <strong>the</strong> university programme to wnich entry is sought.<br />
Credit beyond this may be given on gn individual basis where· <strong>the</strong><br />
college and university programmes are in similar areas, and where <strong>the</strong><br />
applicant's academic record and background warrant special<br />
consideration.<br />
For Engineering, as a general policy, applicants from Ontario Colleges<br />
<strong>of</strong> Applied Arts and Technology who have achieved a first-class honours<br />
standing in <strong>the</strong> last two years <strong>of</strong> a three-year technology programme will<br />
be considered for admission to <strong>the</strong> second level <strong>of</strong> a relevant Engineering<br />
programme.<br />
B. ADMISSION FROM RYERSON POL YTECHNICAL<br />
INSTITUTE<br />
In determining admissibility and <strong>the</strong> possibility <strong>of</strong> advance credit, due<br />
consideration is given to <strong>the</strong> admission requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ryerson programme,<br />
its length <strong>of</strong> study and nature (Le. certificate, diploma or<br />
degree), standing in <strong>the</strong> programme and studies desired at university<br />
level. Students with high standing after 9ne or two years <strong>of</strong> study are<br />
invited to apply.<br />
Every application is dealt with individuaBy so that appropriate academic<br />
credit may be granted where warranted.<br />
C. ADMISSION FROM REDEEMER COLLEGE<br />
For admission to <strong>McMaster</strong> <strong>University</strong> a student must present, with an<br />
appropriate average, six Year 1 courses from .Redeemer College which<br />
are appropriate for <strong>the</strong> <strong>McMaster</strong> programme. Redeemer College<br />
courses in <strong>the</strong> 110-119 series are treated as equivalent to OACs for purposes<br />
<strong>of</strong> admission. Students who wish advanced credit for work completed<br />
at Redeemer College must write an examination set by <strong>McMaster</strong><br />
for each course in which credit is sought.<br />
D. ADMISSION FROM OTHER CANADIAN PROVINCES<br />
We welcome applications from students from o<strong>the</strong>r Canadian provinces.<br />
They must meet <strong>the</strong> follOWing minimum requirements and present subjects<br />
appropriate for <strong>the</strong> programmes as described above under Subject<br />
Requirements for Specific Levell Programmes. For clarification, applicants<br />
are invited to contact <strong>the</strong> <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> Student Uaison.<br />

E. ADMISSION FROM OTHER COUNTRIES<br />
We welCome applications from students from o<strong>the</strong>r countries. We have,<br />
for convenience, indicated our admission requirements for applicants<br />
from selected countries.<br />
Students from o<strong>the</strong>r countries should send <strong>of</strong>ficial matriculation certificates<br />
weB in advance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> session. The equivalent <strong>of</strong> first-class<br />
standing may be required for some Hmited enrolment programmes.<br />
Clear notarized photocopies <strong>of</strong> certificates in a language o<strong>the</strong>r than English<br />
should be accompanied by notarized English translations. Clear<br />
photocopies <strong>of</strong> English language certificates must be notarized. Each<br />
applicant is considered on an individual basis. Applicants are strongly<br />
advised not to come to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> until <strong>the</strong>y have been informed <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir acceptance. ,<br />
Applicants whose native language is not English and who have not<br />
resided in an English-speaking country for four years will be required to<br />
obtain standing satisfactory to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> in <strong>the</strong> Michigan English<br />
Language Assessment Battery (MELAB). The MELAB authorization form<br />
will be sent upon receipt <strong>of</strong> a formal application for admission. If <strong>the</strong><br />
Test <strong>of</strong> English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) has already been written,<br />
its results may be submitted in place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ME LAB results.<br />
Applicants from <strong>the</strong> G.C.E. System require:<br />
1. five G.C.E. subjects at least two <strong>of</strong> which must be at <strong>the</strong> Advanced<br />
Level;<br />
12. Advanced Level subjects appropriate for <strong>the</strong> programme desired,<br />
(refer above to Subject Requirements for Specific Level 1<br />
Programmes);<br />
3. an average <strong>of</strong> at least 'C' in <strong>the</strong> two Advanced Level subjects<br />
Applicants from Hons. Kong require:<br />
I, five subjects in <strong>the</strong> G.C.E. or' <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Hong Kong Matriculation,<br />
at least two <strong>of</strong> which must be at <strong>the</strong> Advanced Level;<br />
2. Advanced Level subjects appropriate for <strong>the</strong> programme deSired,<br />
(refer above to Subject Requirements for Specific Level 1<br />

3.' an average <strong>of</strong> at least 'C' in <strong>the</strong> two Advanced Level subjects<br />
4. standing satisfactory t9 McMqster <strong>University</strong> in <strong>the</strong> Michigan English<br />
Language Assessment Battery (MELAB). Details <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> test will be<br />
sent upon receipt <strong>of</strong> a forl11al application for admission.<br />
Applicants from <strong>the</strong> United States <strong>of</strong> America should be students<br />
with high standing from Grade 12 <strong>of</strong> an accredited high school in <strong>the</strong><br />
U.S.A. Normally high standing will have been demonstrated by 'A'<br />
(80%) standing. Students who do not meet <strong>the</strong>se requirements may<br />
qualify for admission by completing one year <strong>of</strong> coIlege-level work with<br />
standing acceptable to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />
F. SPECIAL STUDENTS AND MATURE STUDENTS<br />
Applicants who have attended university' are not admissible as special<br />
students or mature students. Applicants to Engineering are not admissible<br />
under this category.<br />

Full-time Study (Mature Students): If you do not meet <strong>the</strong> normal<br />
admission requirements described above, in Admission from Ontario<br />
Secondary Schools, you may be admitted on university probation to<br />
full-time study provided you satisfy aU <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> follOWing three conditions:<br />
L you are at least 21 years old or will be in <strong>the</strong> calendar year in which<br />
you propose to start; and<br />
2. you have not attended secondary school on a full-time basis for at<br />
least two years; and<br />
