ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS<br />

L. ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME<br />

High school students with first-class standing may be allowed to enrol<br />

in courses which do not duplicate <strong>the</strong> material available to <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own high schools. Degree credit for successfully completed courses will<br />

not be granted until after students have been admitted to and have registered<br />

at <strong>McMaster</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Applicants must provide letters <strong>of</strong> recommendation from <strong>the</strong>ir Principal<br />

as well as one o<strong>the</strong>r teacher who knows <strong>the</strong>ir abilities, aptitudes<br />

and interests.<br />

Interested students are invited to contact <strong>the</strong> <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> Admissions for<br />

information regarding available courses and application procedures.<br />

M. STUDENTS STUDYING IN CANADA ON STUDENT<br />

AUTHORIZATION (VISA)<br />

In limited enrolment programmes up to 5% <strong>of</strong> places available in Level<br />

I may be filled by Visa students. -<br />

N. ADVANCED CREDIT<br />

As noted in sections (A),(B),(C), and (G) above, advanced credit may be<br />

granted to applicants who have completed work at ano<strong>the</strong>r university or<br />

college, subject to <strong>the</strong> applicant having met <strong>the</strong> minimum requirements<br />

prescribed. Advanced credit serves to shorten <strong>the</strong> degree programme.<br />

In special situations, where a student has acquired <strong>the</strong> knowledge at<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r kind <strong>of</strong> institution or in a different manner such that <strong>the</strong> qualifications<br />

are difficult to assess, <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> may require an examination<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student. In such a case, <strong>the</strong> Associate Dean (Studies) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Faculty will request <strong>the</strong> appropriate academic department to assess <strong>the</strong><br />

feasibility <strong>of</strong> such an examination. When such an examination is deemed<br />

feaSible, <strong>the</strong> department involved will be responsible for deciding <strong>the</strong><br />

appropriate method <strong>of</strong> evaluation and for administering <strong>the</strong> examination,<br />

which may consist <strong>of</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> possible modes <strong>of</strong> evaluation,<br />

both written and oral. The examinations must be arranged by <strong>the</strong> last<br />

date for registration in <strong>the</strong> student's initial term at <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> and may<br />

not be repeated. Any credit granted as <strong>the</strong> result <strong>of</strong> such an examination<br />

will be shown on <strong>the</strong> transcript in <strong>the</strong> normal manner used for advanced<br />

credit.<br />

Academic Regulations<br />

The regulations which follow are <strong>the</strong> general regulations <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Universiiy. You should read both <strong>the</strong>se general regulations<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Faculty regulations which may be more stringent<br />

and appear in <strong>the</strong> Faculty seciions <strong>of</strong> this Calendar.<br />

Since <strong>the</strong> Academic Regulations are continually reviewed,<br />

we reserve <strong>the</strong> right to change <strong>the</strong> regulations in this section<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Calendar. This <strong>University</strong> also reserves <strong>the</strong> right to cancel<br />

<strong>the</strong> academic privileges <strong>of</strong> a student at any time should<br />

<strong>the</strong> student's scholastic record or conduct warrant so doing.<br />

Honours and three-level degree programmes are <strong>of</strong>fered in <strong>the</strong> Faculties<br />

<strong>of</strong> Humanities, Science, and Social Sciences and in <strong>the</strong> Arts and<br />

Science Programme. Major programmes are <strong>of</strong>fered in <strong>the</strong> Faculties <strong>of</strong><br />

Science and Social Sciences. The general regulations governing <strong>the</strong>se<br />

programmes appear in this section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Calendar. The regulations governing<br />

programmes in BuSiness, Engineering, Enginee-ring and Management,<br />

MediCine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Physio<strong>the</strong>rapy,<br />

Social Work, and Physical Education appear in <strong>the</strong> appropriate Faculty<br />

sections. In <strong>the</strong> event <strong>the</strong>re is a conflict between <strong>the</strong> programme regulations<br />

for <strong>the</strong>se eight programmes and <strong>the</strong> general regulations in this<br />

chapter, <strong>the</strong> programme regulations take precedence.<br />

The folloWing regulations cover <strong>the</strong> ordinary cases. Faculties are<br />

authorized to use discretion in special situations by taking into account<br />

past practice, <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> regulations, and circumstances which, in<br />

<strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faculty, are deserving <strong>of</strong> unusual treatment. Students<br />

who have irregular cases should consult <strong>the</strong> appropriate Associate Dean<br />

(Studies).<br />

General Regulations<br />

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS<br />

While most students will complete all <strong>the</strong>ir undergraduate work at<br />

<strong>McMaster</strong> <strong>University</strong>, <strong>the</strong> minimum requirements set out below apply to<br />

students who take part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir work at o<strong>the</strong>r institutions.<br />

In order to obtain a four- or five-Level (Honours, Major, etc.) first<br />

undergraduate degree, you must complete at least two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> levels<br />

(approximately 60 units <strong>of</strong> work) beyond Level I, including <strong>the</strong> final<br />

levei, at <strong>McMaster</strong>.<br />

In order to obtain a three-level, first undergraduate degree, you may<br />

satisfy <strong>the</strong> residence requirements ei<strong>the</strong>r:<br />

1. by completing <strong>the</strong> final level and at least one o<strong>the</strong>r level (a minimum<br />

<strong>of</strong> approximately 60 units <strong>of</strong> work) at <strong>McMaster</strong> <strong>University</strong>, or<br />

2. by completing <strong>the</strong> final level (approximately 30 units <strong>of</strong> work) at<br />

<strong>McMaster</strong> <strong>University</strong>, inc;:luding at least 18 units <strong>of</strong> Area courses.<br />

The work used to. satisfy <strong>the</strong> residence requirements must be completed<br />

at <strong>McMaster</strong> <strong>University</strong>; work taken at ano<strong>the</strong>r university on a Letter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Permission will not count toward <strong>the</strong> minimum residence<br />

requirements. The appropriate Dean <strong>of</strong> Studies may relax <strong>the</strong>se requirements<br />

in special cases, and may take into account high academic standing<br />

and place <strong>of</strong> .esidence, among o<strong>the</strong>r considerations.<br />

All <strong>the</strong> work for a second bachelor's degree must be completed at<br />

<strong>McMaster</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

REGISTRATION<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> registration is to record <strong>of</strong>ficially your selection <strong>of</strong> programme<br />

and courses. This is done before or at <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> each<br />

session, and info.rmation on how to register will be sent to eligible students.<br />

Counselling is available to assist you in course selection and in<br />

some programmes is compulsory.<br />

Selection <strong>of</strong> Courses: Before you select <strong>the</strong> courses you wish to<br />

take, please read <strong>the</strong> requirements for your programme in <strong>the</strong> appropriate<br />

Faculty sections <strong>of</strong> this Calendar. First select <strong>the</strong> courses required<br />

for your programme and <strong>the</strong>n electives; ensure that you have completed<br />

<strong>the</strong> courses which are listed as prerequisites and have completed or chosen<br />

courses that are listed as corequisites. If you fail to meet <strong>the</strong> programme<br />

requirements, you will not be eligible to graduate, and, if you<br />

have not passed <strong>the</strong> prerequisite courses, you will not be able to take<br />

<strong>the</strong> course selected.<br />
