FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES<br />
l.b provide evidence <strong>of</strong> achievement <strong>of</strong> a minimum <strong>of</strong> B - in at least<br />
12 units (or equivalent) <strong>of</strong> university degree credit courses. (These<br />
courses may be taken as a full-time or part-time student.)<br />
Note: <strong>University</strong> degree credit courses complc:~ted'prior to admission will<br />
be assessed for advanced credit, following admission to <strong>the</strong> programme,<br />
by <strong>the</strong> Co-ordinator <strong>of</strong> Studies.<br />
2. submit a completed original and three (3) copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir response \<br />
to <strong>the</strong> questionnaire provided in <strong>the</strong> application package;<br />
3. submit three (3) completed reference forms from non-relatives,<br />
including one person qualified to address <strong>the</strong> appplicant's academic<br />
capabilities. Reference forms will be provided in <strong>the</strong> application<br />
package.<br />
Applicants will be evaluated on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> material submitted in<br />
1, 2 and 3 above. Those ranked highest may be invited to come to<br />
<strong>McMaster</strong> in -early May for an interview. Applicants are responsible for<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir own travel expenses.<br />
Failure to attend <strong>the</strong> interview will result in cancellation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> application.<br />
The scores awarded by <strong>the</strong> assessors are final.<br />
C. Admission From O<strong>the</strong>r Degree Nursing Progra'mmes<br />
Applicants who are currently enrolled in a Nursing degree programme<br />
at ano<strong>the</strong>r university may wish t() transfer to <strong>McMaster</strong>. Availability <strong>of</strong><br />
space in <strong>the</strong> Level requested will be determined by <strong>the</strong> Co-ordinator <strong>of</strong><br />
Studies (B.Sc.N. programme). Even if no space is available, <strong>the</strong> applicant<br />
may choose to complete <strong>the</strong> admission process and be placed on a waiting<br />
list. Applicants normally should:<br />
1. contact <strong>the</strong> Co-ordinator <strong>of</strong> Studies to discuss placement in <strong>the</strong><br />
programme;<br />
2. send a written request to <strong>the</strong> Chairperson, Undergraduate Nursing<br />
Admissions Committee outlining <strong>the</strong>ir request;<br />
3. submit a completed original and three (3) copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir response<br />
to <strong>the</strong> Questionnaire provided in <strong>the</strong> transfer application package;<br />
4. submit an <strong>of</strong>ficial letter from <strong>the</strong> Dean/Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> programme<br />
in which <strong>the</strong> applicant is currently enrolled stating that <strong>the</strong> applicant<br />
is in "good standing" in that programme (good standing is interpreted<br />
as at least a B- average in nursing courses);<br />
5. Submit a current <strong>of</strong>ficial transcript.<br />
The applicant may be invited to <strong>McMaster</strong> for a personal interview.<br />
Interviews are held in early May. Applicants are responsible for <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />
travel expenses.<br />
Applicants for transfer to studies above Levell beginning in September<br />
must be received by <strong>the</strong> Associate <strong>Registrar</strong> (Health Sciences) no<br />
later than March 15.<br />
D. Diploma Registered Nurses (B) Stream<br />
Any nurse holding, or being eligible jor, nursing registration .prior to <strong>the</strong><br />
date <strong>of</strong> entry to <strong>the</strong> .programme will be considered for admission to <strong>the</strong><br />
Diploma RN.(B) Stream <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Undergraduate Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Science in<br />
Nursing programme.<br />
Applicants 'currently enrolled in a diploma nursing programme wHl be<br />
considered in Category B above.<br />
The <strong>University</strong> does not grant advance credit for diploma nursing<br />
courses, but those <strong>of</strong>fered admission to this two-year programme, enter<br />
at Level III.<br />
There are two categories <strong>of</strong> admission within <strong>the</strong> Diploma R.N. ,(B)<br />
Stream.<br />
1. The Open 'Category: The Open Category is open to all diploma<br />
registered nurses who meet <strong>the</strong> following conditions.<br />
Applicants in this category normally should:<br />
i. possess a current Certificate <strong>of</strong> Competence as a Registered<br />
Nurse in OntariO, or be eligible for reciprocity, or be eligible to<br />
write and subsequently pass <strong>the</strong> Registration examinations.<br />
ii. provide evidence (transcripts) <strong>of</strong> a minimum <strong>of</strong> a B - grade in<br />
at least 6 units (or equivalent) <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> degree credit work.<br />
<strong>University</strong> correspondence degree courses are acceptable.<br />
<strong>University</strong> degree credit courses completed prior to admission<br />
will be assessed for advanced credit, following admission<br />
to <strong>the</strong> programme, by <strong>the</strong> Co-ordinator <strong>of</strong> Studies.<br />
iii. submit a completed original and three (3) copies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
response to <strong>the</strong> questionnaire provided in <strong>the</strong> application<br />
package;<br />
iv. submit three (3) completed reference forms provided in <strong>the</strong><br />
application packet. References should be from non-relatives,<br />
and should include at least one person who is qualified to<br />
address <strong>the</strong> appplicant's pr<strong>of</strong>essional and academic<br />
capabilities.<br />

2. The Collaborative Category: The Collaborative Category was<br />
developed 'in conjunction with specific health care institutions in<br />
Hamilton-Wentworth. Fur<strong>the</strong>r information about this Collaborative<br />
Category is available from <strong>the</strong> Admissions Co-ordinator - Nursing or<br />
<strong>the</strong> Post RN Co-ordinator in <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Nursing.<br />
Candidates wishing to apply to <strong>the</strong> Collaborative Category should<br />
satisfy all those conditions listed above in <strong>the</strong> Open Category. In<br />
addition <strong>the</strong>y must proVide a letter from <strong>the</strong>ir Director <strong>of</strong> Nursing.<br />
ACADEMIC REGULATIONS<br />
In addition to meeting <strong>the</strong> General Academic Regulations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong>, students enrolled in <strong>the</strong> B.Sc.N. programme shall be<br />
subject to <strong>the</strong> following programme regulations.<br />
Registration in <strong>the</strong> B.Sc.N. Programme implies acceptance on <strong>the</strong> part<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> objectives <strong>of</strong> that Programme and <strong>the</strong> methods by<br />
which progress toward <strong>the</strong> achievement <strong>of</strong> those objectives is evaluated.<br />
Since <strong>the</strong> academic regulations are continually reviewed, we reserve<br />
<strong>the</strong> right to change <strong>the</strong> regulations in this section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Calendar.<br />
The <strong>University</strong> also reserves <strong>the</strong> right to cancel <strong>the</strong> academic privileg-es<br />
<strong>of</strong> a student at any time should <strong>the</strong> student's scholastic record or conduct<br />
warrant so doing. Where, in <strong>the</strong> opinion <strong>of</strong> faculty, <strong>the</strong> performance <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> student in clinical nursing practice may jeopardize or endanger <strong>the</strong><br />
welfare <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> patient, or <strong>the</strong> patient's family, <strong>the</strong> student may be<br />
removed from clinical experience any time during <strong>the</strong> academic year<br />
until continuation in <strong>the</strong> course is reviewed. The clinical activities associated<br />
with any clinical COl,lrse must be successfully achieved for attainment<br />
<strong>of</strong> a passing grade in <strong>the</strong> course.<br />
Part-Time Students<br />
Students will be permitted to enter, proceed through and graduate from<br />
<strong>the</strong> B.Sc.N. programme (Al or (B) stream, on a part-time basis. <strong>University</strong><br />
and programme regulations governing <strong>the</strong> full-time undergraduate<br />
students will govern <strong>the</strong> part-time student.<br />
As enrolment is limited, places reserved for part-time ,students at each<br />
Level will be restricted. Normally, Nursing courses are available only<br />
dUring <strong>the</strong> day. Electives may be taken ei<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> day or evening. Independent<br />
study packages are also being developed.<br />
Guidelines ,have beeR established for part-time study. Applicants are<br />
advised to seek counselling from <strong>the</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Nursing 'before engaging<br />
in part-time study. '<br />
·Level I 'Nursing<br />
A student in Level I must:<br />
1. achieve a <strong>University</strong> Average (UA) <strong>of</strong> at least 2.5; and<br />
2. achieve an average <strong>of</strong> at least 4.0 in <strong>the</strong> Nursing and required Health<br />
Science courses; and<br />
3. achieve a grade <strong>of</strong> at least C - in <strong>the</strong> Nursing and required Health<br />
Science courses witA <strong>the</strong> exception that a grade <strong>of</strong> D ,D, or D +<br />
is permissible in one Health Science course.<br />
A student who fails to meet <strong>the</strong>se requirements may not continue in<br />
<strong>the</strong> programme but may seek readmissioR hy writing to <strong>the</strong> B.Sc.N. Programme<br />
Chair.<br />
Area Courses:<br />
The Area courses consist <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> Nursing and Health Science courses<br />
above Level I.<br />
The following courses are designated clinical courses:<br />
Basic (A) Stream Nursing 2L06, 2H04, 3X07, 3Y07, 4J07,<br />
4K07.<br />
Diploma Registered<br />
Nurses (B) Stream Nursing '3L05, 3M05, 3N08, 4S06, 4T06.<br />
A grade <strong>of</strong> at least C - is required in all Area courses with <strong>the</strong> excep-<br />
