Admission Requirements<br />
The <strong>University</strong> reserves <strong>the</strong> right to change any information<br />
contained in this section at any time without notice.<br />
All Level I programmes have limited enrolment and admission<br />
is made by selection. This 'means, <strong>the</strong>refore, that possession<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> minimum admission requirements does not<br />
guarantee admission.<br />
Admission from Ontario Secondary<br />
Schools<br />
To be considered for admission you must satisfy not only <strong>the</strong> general<br />
reqUirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong>, but also <strong>the</strong> subject requirements for <strong>the</strong><br />
specific programme you wish to enter.<br />
For an applicant from an Ontario secondary school <strong>the</strong>re are three<br />
requirements:<br />
1. <strong>the</strong> Ontario Secondary School Diploma with \acceptable standing;<br />
and<br />
2. Q. 'weighted average' in <strong>the</strong> OACs completed which is abpve <strong>the</strong> minimum<br />
specified by each programme; and<br />
3. satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> subject requirements for <strong>the</strong> appropriate<br />
programme.<br />
Grade 13 or OAC MusiC is acceptable as a credit. and <strong>the</strong> mark<br />
obtained is included in <strong>the</strong> average for admission. Alternatively, <strong>the</strong><br />
applicant may submit certificates from a recognized conservatory <strong>of</strong><br />
music in Grade 4 <strong>the</strong>ory, or in Grade 9 practical and Grade 3 <strong>the</strong>ory.<br />
Marks supplied by any acceptable Conservatory <strong>of</strong> Music may be used<br />
to determine <strong>the</strong> average for admission.<br />
We know that experimental programmes are <strong>of</strong>fered in some Ontario<br />
secondary schools and welcome -applicants from <strong>the</strong>se programmes. If<br />
you are such an appHcant.and do not meet exactly <strong>the</strong> subject requirements<br />
outlined below, you should write to <strong>the</strong> Associate <strong>Registrar</strong> (liaison<br />
and Admissions) whp will ensure that your application is carefully<br />
considered.<br />
EARLY ADMISSION FROM ONTARIO SECONDARY<br />
SCHOOLS<br />
Early admission is granted annually in June on a date agreed upon by<br />
all Ontario universities. Early Admission is based on interim marks supplied<br />
by secondary schools in April and may be gran'ted to an applicant<br />
who expects to acquire final standing later in <strong>the</strong> year.<br />
If you are granted Early Admission, you must subsequently complete<br />
successfully six Ontario Academic Courses (OACs) or six Grade 13 subjects,<br />
including all required subjects. During <strong>the</strong> period OACs are being<br />
introduced, appropriate combinations <strong>of</strong> OAC credits and Grade 13 subjects,<br />
to total six, will be acceptable. In addition, you will be expected to<br />
meet <strong>the</strong> minimum average required for your programme. The <strong>University</strong><br />
reserves <strong>the</strong> right to withdraw <strong>of</strong>fers <strong>of</strong> admissi9n to those applicants<br />
who do not meet <strong>the</strong> minimum average prescribed for <strong>the</strong> programme<br />
using <strong>the</strong> final marks, who have not received <strong>the</strong>ir Ontario Secondary<br />
SchoqI Diploma, or who have not responded within <strong>the</strong> two week<br />
response period. Final marks are reported to <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> for students<br />
registered in OACs, but applicants' may submit such marks directly to<br />
<strong>the</strong> Associate <strong>Registrar</strong> (liaison and Admissions).<br />
If you have final standing in each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> OACs required to ~nter <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>McMaster</strong> <strong>University</strong> programme you have chosen, you may be granted<br />
Final Admission.<br />
Subject Requirements for Specific<br />
Level I Programmes<br />
At <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> writing, Grade 13 courses are being phased<br />
out and being replaced by Ontario Academic Courses (OACs).<br />
During <strong>the</strong> transition period we are treating <strong>the</strong> two sets <strong>of</strong><br />
courses as equivalent. The requirements below are written in<br />
terms <strong>of</strong> OACs for which Grade 13 courses may generally be<br />
substituted.<br />
ARTS AND SCIENCE I (Special programme)<br />
Applicants are required to submit a completed Supplementary Application,<br />
normally by April 1st. The information provided enters into <strong>the</strong><br />
selection process. Only applicants with high academic standing are<br />
selected. In recent years successful candidates had a,n admission average<br />
in <strong>the</strong> upper 80's or higher. The following are <strong>the</strong> minimum<br />
requirements.<br />
1. One <strong>of</strong> OAC English I, OAC anglais I or OAC anglais II.<br />
2. OAC Calculus.<br />
3. Completion <strong>of</strong> additional OACs to total six credits. At least three <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> additional OACs must be selected from among English, fran~is,<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r languages, Algebra and Geometry, Finite Ma<strong>the</strong>matics, Biology,<br />
ChemiStry, Physics, Geography, History, and Music.<br />
Candidates without <strong>the</strong>se qualifications who never<strong>the</strong>less provide evidence<br />
<strong>of</strong> unusual promise will also be considered.<br />
Students Presenting Grade 13 Courses<br />
Grade 13 courses in Algebra and in Relations and Functions will be<br />
accepted in Group 3 above.<br />
BUSINESS I<br />
The specific percentag~ required for admission to Business I varies from<br />
year to year. The following are <strong>the</strong> minimum requirements.<br />
1. One <strong>of</strong> OAC Calculus, OAC Finite Ma<strong>the</strong>matics or OAC Algebra and<br />
.Geometry. Calculus or OAC Finite Ma<strong>the</strong>matics is preferred.<br />
2. One <strong>of</strong> OAC English I, OAC anglais I or OAC anglais II.<br />
3. At least three additional OACs selected from among English, fran<br />
~ais, o<strong>the</strong>r languages, Calculus, Finite Ma<strong>the</strong>matics, Algebra and<br />
Geometry, Biology, ChemiStry, Physics, Geography, History, Music,<br />
Accounting and Economics.<br />
4. Completion <strong>of</strong> additional OACs to total six credits with a minimum<br />
overall average <strong>of</strong> 70.0%.<br />
Although <strong>the</strong> stated minimum is 70.0%, -in recent years an average in<br />
<strong>the</strong> mid-70's has been required for an <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong> Early Admission in June.<br />
Students Presenting Grade 13 Courses<br />
Grade 13 courses in Algebra and in Relations and Functions may be<br />
used in Groups 1 and 3 above, but only one <strong>of</strong> OAC Algebra and Geometry<br />
and Grade 13 Algebra may be used.<br />
ENGINEERING I<br />
Applicants are required to submit a completed Supplementary Application.<br />
The information provided enters into <strong>the</strong> selection process. The<br />
following are <strong>the</strong> minimum requireme·nts.<br />
1. One <strong>of</strong> OAC English I, OAC anglais I or OAC anglais II.<br />
2. Calculus.<br />
3. Algebra and Geometry.<br />
4. Chemistry<br />
5. Physics<br />
6. Completion <strong>of</strong> one additional OAC to total six credits with a minimum<br />
overall average <strong>of</strong> 75.0%.<br />
Students Presenting Grade 13 Courses<br />
1. An overall weighted average <strong>of</strong> at least 75.0% in <strong>the</strong> six credits<br />
<strong>of</strong>fered including -<br />
2. A weighted average <strong>of</strong> at least 75.0% in <strong>the</strong> following five Grade 13<br />
credits: Calculus, Algebra, Functions and Relations, Physics, and<br />
ChemiStry.<br />
Applicants presenting a mixture <strong>of</strong> Grade 13 subjects and OACs, may<br />
