The Faculty <strong>of</strong> Business <strong>of</strong>fers three programmes, each <strong>of</strong> which spans<br />

four levels <strong>of</strong> study. The Honours Commerce programme, which<br />

leads to <strong>the</strong> Honours Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Commerce (Honours B.Com.) degree,<br />

provides substantial concentration in business subjects beyond <strong>the</strong><br />

essential core <strong>of</strong> studies. The Honours Commerce and Economics<br />

programme, which is <strong>of</strong>fered in conjunction with <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Economics,<br />

leads to <strong>the</strong> Honours Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Commerce and Arts (Honours<br />

B.Com. & Arts) degree. This programme' combines extensive amounts<br />

<strong>of</strong> work in both Commerce and Economics. The Commerce programme,<br />

which leads to <strong>the</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Commerce (B.Com.) degree,<br />

contains <strong>the</strong> essential grounding in business subjects and promotes <strong>the</strong><br />

broadening <strong>of</strong> horizons through studies in Social Sciences, Humanities<br />

and Science. These three programmes are referred to collectively as <strong>the</strong><br />

Commerce programmes.<br />

,In addition, <strong>the</strong> Faculties <strong>of</strong> Business and Engineering <strong>of</strong>fer a five-level<br />

jOint programme for <strong>the</strong> Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Engineering and Management<br />

(B.Eng.Mgt.) degree. This programme provides a full course <strong>of</strong> study in<br />

Engineering and includes a complete core <strong>of</strong> business subjects. Details<br />

conceming <strong>the</strong> B.Eng.Mgt. programme and its academic regulations are<br />

given in <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Engineering section <strong>of</strong> this Calendar.,<br />

Also, <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Business participates in <strong>the</strong> Committee <strong>of</strong> Instruction<br />

and <strong>of</strong>fers courses for <strong>the</strong> B.A. programme in Labour Studies<br />

which i! described in <strong>the</strong> Faculty <strong>of</strong> Social Sciences section <strong>of</strong> this<br />

Calendar.<br />

The Commerce Programmes<br />

In Level I, a student who wishes to pursue any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Commerce programmes<br />

establishes a foundation in computer science, economics,<br />

ma<strong>the</strong>matics and psychology or sociology, and takes additional elective<br />

work. While this course <strong>of</strong> study is presCribed in Business I, a student<br />

who establishes a similar background in <strong>the</strong> Level I programme <strong>of</strong><br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r Faculty may also be considered for admission to Level II (Commerce<br />

II). Such a student should consult with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Administrator,<br />

Undergraduate Programmes, Faculty <strong>of</strong> Business. '<br />

A student must gain admission to Commerce II in order to proceed<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> Honours B.Com., Honours B.Com. & Arts, or B.Com.<br />

degrees. In Level II a wide range <strong>of</strong> business subjects (accounting,<br />

finance, marketing, organizational behaviour, and statistical analysis for<br />

business) are introduced and fur<strong>the</strong>r coursework in economics is<br />

required. Elective work is taken from non-Commerce courses.<br />

The Commerce programmes diverge at Level III. While <strong>the</strong> same core<br />

<strong>of</strong> required Commerce courses is completed in Levels III and N, <strong>the</strong> mix<br />

<strong>of</strong> work taken over <strong>the</strong>se Levels differs. In Levels III and IV <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Honours<br />

Commerce programme, about three-quarters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work is in<br />

Commerce courses, with <strong>the</strong> remainder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> load coming from electives<br />

outside <strong>the</strong> Faculty. The Honours Commerce and Economics<br />

programme contains approximately equal amounts <strong>of</strong> work in Commerce<br />

and Economics over.Levels III and lV, with few electives outside<br />

<strong>the</strong>se diSCiplines. In Levels III and IV <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Commerce programme,<br />

about one~half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> course work is in each <strong>of</strong> Commerce subjects and<br />

non-Commerce electives.<br />

PART-TIME STUDIES<br />

The Commerce programmes may be taken through part-time studies. A<br />

part-time student is permitted to take a maximum <strong>of</strong> 18 units in any<br />

Winter Session (September to April) and a maximum <strong>of</strong> 12 units in any<br />

Summer term (May to August). It should be noted that only a few Level<br />

IV Commerce courses are <strong>of</strong>fered in evenings or in s~mmer sessions.<br />

CONTINUING STUDENTS<br />

Graduates <strong>of</strong> <strong>McMaster</strong>'s three Commerce programmes or one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Engineering and Management programmes may take as part-time students,<br />

Level III and IV Commerce courses (not previously taken) excluding<br />

*Commerce 4AG3, 4AH3, 4AI3, with permission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Administrator, Undergraduate Programmes. Such permission will be<br />

given' only if normal prerequisites are satisfied and if space permits after<br />

meeting,<strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong> in-course students. (see Admission Requirements<br />

1. Continuing and Post-Degree Students).<br />

"These courses are available as CCE 500, CCE 501, CCE 502, through<br />

MGMaster's Centre for Continuing Education, subject to sufficient enrolments<br />

and availability <strong>of</strong> qualified instructors.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r than those GRADUATES specified above, Commerce courses<br />

are not open to Continuing Students. Such students are eligible for<br />

courses designated BUSI~ESS.<br />

SECOND UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE<br />

A student with an undergraduate degree will not be admitt.ed or readmitted<br />

to any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Commerce programmes. Such a student may wish<br />

to apply for admission to <strong>the</strong> M.B.A. programme.<br />

CREDIT TOWARDS THE M.B.A.,AND PROFESSIONAL<br />

DESIGNATIONS<br />

If appropriate academic standing has been attained in undergraduate<br />

courses, credit may be given toward <strong>the</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Business Administration<br />

degree. This could reduce <strong>the</strong> M.B.A. programme to one additional<br />

academic year beyond <strong>the</strong> Honours B.Com., Honours B.eom. & Arts,<br />

B.Com. and B.Eng.Mgt. degrees.<br />

Educational requirements toward a variety <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional designations<br />

can be met in varying' degrees WITHIN <strong>the</strong> Commerce programmes<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Engineering and Management programme. The<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional accounting designations C.A., C.M.A. and C.G.A. are<br />

awarded by <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Chartered Accountants <strong>of</strong> Ontario, <strong>the</strong> Society<br />

<strong>of</strong> Management 'Accountants <strong>of</strong> Ontario and <strong>the</strong> Certified General<br />

Accountants ASSOCiation <strong>of</strong> Ontario, respectively, while <strong>the</strong> designation<br />

C.P.M. is awarded by <strong>the</strong> Human Resources Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals Association<br />

<strong>of</strong> Ontario.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>r opportunities for meeting educational requirements for pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

designations are available to students in all Commerce and EngineJring<br />

and Management programmes. Additional course work may be<br />

taken as Extras (see Extra Courses below) while in <strong>the</strong> programme. Fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

units <strong>of</strong> credit may also be taken after graduation (see Continuing<br />

Student~ above).<br />

Information concerning credit towards <strong>the</strong>se pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

designations can be obtained from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Office</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Administrator,<br />

Undergraduate Programmes, Faculty <strong>of</strong> Business.<br />

Academic Regulatio,ns<br />

A student enrolled in any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Commerce programmes, in<br />

addition to meeting <strong>the</strong> General Academ!c: Regulations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong>, shall be subject to <strong>the</strong> following Faculty<br />

Regulations:<br />

CU.MULATIVE COMMERCE AVERAGE<br />

The Cumulative Area Average for <strong>the</strong> Commerce programmes is termed<br />

<strong>the</strong> Cumulative Commerce Average (CCA) and is <strong>the</strong> weighted average<br />

<strong>of</strong>, grades in all courses, including non-Commerce courses,<br />

attempted subsequent to admission to Commerce Level II or readmission<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Commerce programme, excepting those courses designated<br />

at registration as Extra.<br />

CONTINUATION IN PROGRAMME<br />

Continuation in Levels III and IV: The Cumulative Commerce Average<br />

begins with grades attained in Level II.<br />

A student who maintains a Cumulative Commerce Average <strong>of</strong> at least<br />

7.0, with no more than 6 units <strong>of</strong> F grades, may continue in <strong>the</strong> Honours<br />

Commerce programme. A student who maintains a CCA <strong>of</strong> at<br />

least 7.0, with no more than 6 units <strong>of</strong> F grades, and maintains at least<br />
