The circle is in two pieces. We have made<br />

fractions, parts of a whole. To show a fraction,<br />

we have shaded one of the two pieces. The<br />

fraction is written:<br />

This means one out of two parts.<br />

The top number is the shaded part (called<br />

the numerator). The bottom number is the total<br />

number of pieces (the denominator).<br />

Let’s look at another circle:<br />

We have divided this circle into four pieces –<br />

showing it as fourths.<br />
