Objectives<br />

In the process of completing this module the intern will:<br />

1. Articulate an understanding of the elements related to pain, anxiety, distress and<br />

suffering.<br />

2. Demonstrate an understanding and working knowledge of basic medical terminology,<br />

and pain assessment / management tools and transfer this into practice.<br />

3. Utilize appropriate, developmentally supportive communication skills to assist in the<br />

effective coping of the child and family.<br />

4. Identify developmental, individualized cues from which to base potential<br />

interventions.<br />

5. Demonstrate developmentally‐appropriate strategies to support the patient and<br />

family during painful procedures.<br />

6. Demonstrate developmentally‐appropriate strategies to support the patient and<br />

family during emotionally challenging, anxiety producing events.<br />

7. Identify and utilize child life tools to support the coping of the patient and family<br />

during challenging situations.<br />

8. Engage in self‐reflection regarding the ways in which personal beliefs influence the<br />

intern’s own responses when supporting those who are in pain or experiencing<br />

suffering.<br />
