Objectives<br />
In the process of completing this module the intern will:<br />
1. Demonstrate knowledge and skill regarding student/volunteer procedures,<br />
orientation, supervision and evaluation.<br />
2. Demonstrate ability to match volunteer ability with tasks/assignments.<br />
3. Demonstrate knowledge regarding patient‐school communication: needs, processes,<br />
content and follow up.<br />
4. Demonstrate an understanding of how special events are scheduled, facilitated, and<br />
evaluated.<br />
5. Demonstrate an understanding of donor relations, accepting donations and providing<br />
follow up as indicated.<br />
6. Become familiar with department and hospital resources, materials and equipment<br />
and demonstrate the ability to utilize in an efficient, safe and cost effective manner.<br />
7. Understand basic research and statistics as they apply to development and evaluation<br />
of child life services.<br />
8. Become familiar with organization structure, policies and procedures, mission and<br />
goals.<br />
9. Become familiar with the impact of funding on the departmental budget.<br />
Required Activities<br />
The intern will:<br />
1. Assist with volunteer supervision and their daily assignments.<br />
2. Observe and discuss school procedure for school communications during a patient’s<br />
hospital stay as well as school re‐entry procedures.<br />
3. Observe and discuss process for scheduling, supervising and evaluating special events.<br />
Facilitate at least one special event under the supervision of a child life specialist.<br />
4. Write a sample thank you letter for a special event or donation.<br />
5. Inventory child life program supplies, materials and equipment.<br />
6. Discuss with supervising CCLS child life statistics, record keeping, quality indicators and<br />
performance improvement initiatives.<br />
7. Attend department and administrative meetings.<br />
8. Review and discuss department and hospital policies and procedures, mission and<br />
goals. Review the child life program’s scope of service document.<br />
9. Review and understand the department’s budget.<br />
