66 NOTES TO THE CONSOLIDATED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 1 Principal accounting policies (Continued) (v) Cash and cash equivalents Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash on hand and demand deposits, and other shortterm highly liquid investments that are readily convertible to a known amount of cash and are subject to an insignificant risk of changes in value. (w) Share capital Ordinary shares are classified as equity. Incremental costs directly attributable to the issue of new shares or options are shown in equity as a deduction, net of tax, from the proceeds. Where any group company purchases the Company’s equity share capital (treasury shares), the consideration paid, including any directly attributable incremental costs (net of income taxes) is deducted from equity attributable to the Company’s equity holders until the shares are cancelled, reissued or disposed of. Where such shares are subsequently reissued, any consideration received (net of any directly attributable incremental transaction costs and the related income tax effects) is included in equity attributable to the Company’s equity holders. 2 Financial risk management (a) Financial risk factors The Group’s activities expose it to a variety of financial risks: credit risk, liquidity risk and market risk (including cash flow interest rate risk, currency risk and price risk). The Group’s overall risk management programme focuses on the unpredictability of financial markets and seeks to minimise potential adverse effects on the Group’s financial performance. The Group’s treasury function operates as a centralised service for managing financial risks and for providing cost efficient funding to the Group. (i) Credit risk The Group’s credit risk is primarily attributable to trade and other receivables and deposits placed with banks. The Group has no significant concentrations of credit risk. Management has a credit policy in place and the exposures to these credit risks are monitored on an ongoing basis. Sales of products and services are made to customers with appropriate credit history. For credit exposures to customers, management assesses the credit quality of the customers, taking into account its financial position, past experience and other factors. For banks and financial institutions, deposits are only placed with banks with good credit ratings to mitigate the risk arising from banks. (ii) Liquidity risk The Group’s policy is to regularly monitor current and expected liquidity requirements and its compliance with lending covenants, to ensure the maintenance of sufficient reserves of cash and readily realisable marketable securities and adequate committed lines of funding from major financial institutions to meet the Group’s liquidity requirements in the short and longer term. The amounts disclosed in the table are the contractual undiscounted cash flows. Balances due within 12 months equal their carrying amounts, as the impact of discounting is not significant.
