excited because the Redcliffe 

Leagues Club is thrilled to 

be hosting GANGgajang 

this month. 

Founded in 1984, and 

releasing their first album in 

1985, the band has stood the 

test of time and has become 

one of the most iconic sounds 

of Australian music. 

Many of us would be 

familiar with their famous 

single Sounds of Then (also 

known as This is Australia), 

to which we may have 

happily hummed or even 

sung along to at some point. 

Throughout their career, 

they’ve played to hundreds 

of thousands of people and 

their fan base isn’t limited to 

within Australia. They have 

had three hugely successful 

tours in Brazil and even 

some 

showcase 

performances in the US. 

Now, the band is coming 

up on its 30th birthday for 

their first studio album. To 

celebrate, they are doing 

several shows around the 

country and we are very 

lucky to have the opportunity 

to have them here. 

The concert will be held 

on March 27 and entry will 

be free for all members. The 

event is set to be huge and 

we can’t wait to have 

everyone here to celebrate. 

Our resident DJ Luke will 

kick off the night at 6.30pm 

followed later by our 

support acts – The 

Counterfeit Umbrellas and 

Hill 60. 

GANGgajang will then 

take the stage and prove 

they still have what it takes 

to rock the house down.

THE Community Gaming room at the 

Redcliffe Leagues Club is an 

amazing facility with plenty of

WE all know that when we spend time at the 

club, to catch up with friends and to enjoy 

all that the club has to offer, it’s not hard to lose 

track of time.

Heat is on in talent finals 

THE Voice Your Talent

Heats finish on March 10 and this 

means that from here on, it is country 

and western themed songs only. 

The semi-finals will be held on 

March 17 and 24 and all competitors 

on these nights are required to sing 

and dress up in their best country and 

western attire. 

Following on from this is the 

event we’ve all been waiting for, the 

final. Held on the last day of March, 

it’s a fantastic way to see the month 

out. 

Come along and allow yourself to 

be entertained by some amazing 

country talent and see for yourself 

who the lucky winners will be. 

Speaking of which, we definitely 

believe that this talent and bravery 

should not go unrewarded. So each 

winner will receive a fantastic cash

Dolphins lose great clubman 

REDCLIFFE lost one of 

its outstanding 

citizens and characters 

last month. 

Bill Marsh was one of a 

kind. I met him in my first 

year at Redcliffe in 1975 and 

a finer person you could not 

wish to meet. 

Bill was an outstanding 

sportsman in his own right, 

revelling in tennis, cricket and 

golf and had an absolute 

passion for rugby league, in 

particular, the Redcliffe 

Dolphins. 

He rarely missed a home 

game and also travelled to 

watch his grandsons play the 

game. 

A legendary trawlerman on 

the Peninsula, if anyone could 

catch ‘em, Bill could. 

Many stories could be told 

of Bill’s fishing feats and his 

boats, feats of staying afloat 

and being held together with 

wire. 

Bill and his wife Bev have 

been members of the Redcliffe 

Leagues Club going back to 

its very early days in the 70s 

and would often visit our

club. A very dedicated and 

justifiably proud family man, 

the world is a better place for 

having had Bill Marsh in it.

THE club has decided to 

honour those extraordinary 

gentlemen who played first 

grade in 1965, not just those 

who played in the victorious 

grand final side. 

Over the weekend of 

August 22-23, we will have 

these troupers and their 

partners as guests for a 

dinner and at our game on 

that weekend.

BY the time we go to press 

we should have a bit of an 

idea of what the starting teams 

for the year will be after a 

couple of trial matches and 

lots of training. 

We are quietly confident 

we will be much improved on 

last year and we need to be 

(improved I mean). 

I won’t put any pressure on 

any of the players by naming 

those to look out for. I am 

known to be a bit of a “Jonah” 

when it comes to giving 

someone a rap. 

But going on our wins in all 

three grades over Norths on 

February 14 at Bishop Park, 

the talent is there at the club 

and now the coaching staff 

have to harness it. 

One observation did stand 

out and that was Grant Cleal 

and his staff have certainly 

brought in some size and 

power to our pack. 

They were awesome 

against the Devils, and if we 

can stay injury free, can 

hopefully give the Intrust 

Super Cup a shake in 2015.

Stadium will create jobs 

ONE of the most 

famous phrases used 

by Bill Clinton during the 

1992 presidential 

campaign was the slogan 

“It’s the economy, silly!” 

Well, it wasn’t the word 

silly but another harsher word 

that I tell my kids not to say. 

However it is the economy, 

silly. Redcliffe has high youth 

unemployment figures 

therefore the creation of 

unskilled jobs is a must. 

Planning, building and 

construction of the proposed 

Dolphin Stadium is estimated 

to create around 13,500 man 

hours. That’s only the 

beginning. 

We estimate the injection 

into the local economy would 

be in the vicinity of $32 

million per year. 

This income will come 

from visitors attending 

sporting carnivals, NRL 

games and trial matches, 

touch football carnivals, 

rugby 7 carnivals, rugby 

league Nines, Oztag carnivals, 

trade fairs, conventions, 

expos, company displays, 

product launches, maybe the 

Crusty Demons Daredevils or 

Monster Trucks, soccer events 

such as the A-League and 

entertainment specials. 

The Dolphins will make it a 

fortress during winter and the 

Peninsula Power Soccer 

(sponsored by our Leagues 

Club) will have home games 

during summer. 

If we can attract visitors to 

Redcliffe and they stay one, 

two or three nights, then the 

impact into the local economy 

is significant. 

A study for Stadiums 

Queensland noted that the 

economic impact created by 

the state’s major footy codes 

was estimated to be $341 

million per annum and that 

nearly half the economic 

impact created came from 

spending at pubs, clubs, 

restaurants, 

hotels 

(accommodation), transport 

and other services. 

The regular home games of 

the various teams created 

2,050 jobs in catering, 

security, grounds staff, 

transport and venue staff. So 

if that’s the case, then let’s 

create some unskilled work 

desperately needed in 

Redcliffe. 

The total of $341 million 

divided by 2050 jobs equals 

$166,341 for the creation of 

one job. So if we have a spend 

of $32 million divided by 

$166,341, that equates to 192 

Don’t worry!

The benefits of using this latest technology 

are endless. Now your tips don’t lock out until 

five minutes before each match’s scheduled

So instead of missing an entire round, now

You may even come out better off in some

There is also the added knockout competition

SEEING that on occasions I’m one to sit behind the desk for long periods of time, but mind you I’m sure 

some people sit behind their well-oiled slab of oak from dusk to dawn. 

Anyway I thought I would do some 

research to advise some of the risks 

associated with focusing on the grind we 

are all challenged with. 

Consider this your daily reminder to 

get off your butt: Being sedentary may be 

twice as dangerous as being obese, 

according to a new study from the 

University of Cambridge. 

Researchers tracked more than 

334,000 people for 12 years and 

compared activity levels and weights 

among the subjects who died during that 

time. 

They calculated how many deaths 

could have been avoided if all the 

participants had been more active versus 

at a healthy weight and determined that 

physical activity could have saved twice 

as many people as weight loss. 

How is sitting so fatal? It increases 

your risk for the diseases responsible for 

the majority of deaths, including heart 

disease, diabetes, and some cancers, says 

study co-author Soren Brage, Ph.D., head 

of the physical activity epidemiology 

program at Cambridge. 

Exercise, on the other hand, protects 

you from those same illnesses by 

lowering your blood pressure and the 

levels of fat, sugars, and insulin in your 

blood. So no matter how jam-packed 

your day is, remember to move. Just 20 

minutes a day of brisk walking lowered 

the study participants’ risk of early death 

by 30 percent. 

“I think it would be hard for most 

people to argue that they cannot find 

even 20 minutes in a whole day of 1440 

minutes to do something for their own 

health benefit,” says Brage. 

“There are lots of ways to accumulate 

activity throughout the day, even if you 

are very busy. Take the stairs or park

THE Old Boys again provided a sausage 

sizzle for the junior sign-on day on Sunday, 

February 8. 

Some of our members tell me it was their 

25th year in a row. It was great to see so 

many of our future stars signing up to play 

this great game. 

I hope all the boys and girls have a 

wonderful season with lots of fun, new 

mates and plenty of tries. 

A special mention to members Bryce 

Dwyer and Paul Van De Weyer, who have 

used their exceptional skill to craft 50 touch 

judge flags for the use of our junior teams.

THE British are coming 

… well, actually, they 

are already here on the 

Peninsula. 

While other Intrust Super 

Cup clubs have had a 

smattering of English players 

over the past couple of years, 

the Dolphins were restricted 

to fullback Louis Sheriff last 

year. 

However in the off-season, 

Bobbie Goulding Jr, a former 

English Super League half 

with Wakefield, turned up at 

Dolphin Oval, along with 

Widnes Vikings pair Alex 

Brown and Adam Lawton. 

Goulding played in the 

NSW Cup last season with 

Roosters offshoot Newtown 

after leaving cash-strapped 

Wakefield when they failed to 

finalise a promised contract. 

His father was one of 

England’s greatest halfbacks, 

a confident and creative 

playmaker with a booming 

kicking game. 

He made his first grade 

debut at 16 for Wigan in 1988 

• TOMMY Bishop 

and at 18 was the youngest 

British Lions tourist. 

Goulding has fitted in well 

at Dolphin Oval and was in 

the first-grade squad last 

month named for the trial 

against Norths, although he 

has Luke Capewell in front of 

him for the No. 7 jersey. 

And also resident at 

Dolphin Oval is a player with 

almost as regal a English 

league background. 

Hooker Alex Bishop is the 

grandson of famed Great 

Britain halfback Tommy 

Bishop, who left England in 

1969 for Cronulla before 

finishing his playing career 

with Brisbane Norths. 

Alex, who has just turned 

21, played the final four 

fixtures of last season in 

Redcliffe’s top side but knows 

that is no guarantee of a first 

grade berth in 2015. 

“I love playing in the top 

side,” he said. “It was very 

tough but I enjoyed it. I 

actually came into the side as 

hooker after playing halfback 

in the FOGS Cup side. 

“I like both positions and 

I’m happy to play either as I 

enjoy them both. 

“As I see it there’s five 

hookers in the running this 

season, including myself and 

Hayden Hansen from last 

season. 

The other three are Darcy 

Etrich from CQ and Dragons 

pair Shane Pumipi and Logan 

Harris. 

“There’s a real influx of 

new players and competition 

wise we all will have to work 

hard for our spots. 

“There can’t be any excuses 

and after last season it was the 

way the club had to go. 

“The pre-season has been 

tough under Tony Guilfoyle. 

It’s the first one I’ve had with 

him and it has been a real 

wake-up call. He certainly has 

a great knowledge of the 

science behind our program.” 

Alex, who won best back in 

FOGS A grade last season, 

heads into his fifth season in 

the red and white after joining 

from Norths Aspley. 

He spent three seasons in 

Colts from 2011-2013, 

including the 2012 

premiership season under 

current top grade coach Troy 

Lindsay and Steve Cherry. 

Alex’s father Gary played 

at Brisbane Norths before 

heading back to England with 

Kent Invicta and Oldham 

while his uncle Neil was a 

long-time Dolphins junior 

development officer. Alex’s 

cousin Hayden is now with 

the Sharks’ under 18 Jersey 

Flegg side. 

Meanwhile Alex has been

degree at university, although 

he intends to switch to 

nutrition next year. 

“All the English boys came 

to my 21st and they could all 

relate to things back home 

with my granddad,” he said. 

“I think my dad and 

Bobbie’s dad had played 

together and everyone knew 

of my granddad. 

“He’s not going too bad for 

an old battered footballer and 

sees the majority of my 

games. He’s going OK. I’ve 

been to Britain but it was 

when I was two so can’t 

remember a thing.”
