music will
rock club
CALLING all GANGgajang
fans!
We know you’re out there,
and it’s time for you to get
excited because the Redcliffe
Leagues Club is thrilled to
be hosting GANGgajang
this month.
Founded in 1984, and
releasing their first album in
1985, the band has stood the
test of time and has become
one of the most iconic sounds
of Australian music.
Many of us would be
familiar with their famous
single Sounds of Then (also
known as This is Australia),
to which we may have
happily hummed or even
sung along to at some point.
Throughout their career,
they’ve played to hundreds
of thousands of people and
their fan base isn’t limited to
within Australia. They have
had three hugely successful
tours in Brazil and even
some
showcase
performances in the US.
Now, the band is coming
up on its 30th birthday for
their first studio album. To
celebrate, they are doing
several shows around the
country and we are very
lucky to have the opportunity
to have them here.
The concert will be held
on March 27 and entry will
be free for all members. The
event is set to be huge and
we can’t wait to have
everyone here to celebrate.
Our resident DJ Luke will
kick off the night at 6.30pm
followed later by our
support acts – The
Counterfeit Umbrellas and
Hill 60.
GANGgajang will then
take the stage and prove
they still have what it takes
to rock the house down.
So if you’re a long-time
fan, a new fan or even if you
just love Australian rock
music, why not come along
and join us. Check out our
website for all the
information.
Promotions provide heaps of gaming fun
THE Community Gaming room at the
Redcliffe Leagues Club is an
amazing facility with plenty of
machines, a stylish interior and friendly
staff.
But did you know that there is so much more
that goes on than meets the eye?
During this month the Pot of Gold promotion
will be run every Saturday afternoon from 2pm
to 5pm.
A winner will be drawn every half an hour,
and if you are the lucky winner, you will get to
choose one of six pots of gold.
The pot will contain the cash value that you
have won, which will be between $250 and
$1000. Entry is gained automatically with
every $20 turnover while your membership
card is inserted into the gaming machine, so all
you have to do is play to be in the draw to win.
Then to make our Sundays a bit more
exciting, we have the Hunger Buster special.
This fantastic promotion means that every
member who receives a $100 win on their win
meter while their card is inserted into the
machine between 4pm and 6pm will also
receive a $15 Hunger Buster voucher.
This voucher is automatically added to your
membership card, and once printed, can be
used at any food outlet within the club.
However the fun isn’t limited to just the
weekends. On every Tuesday and Friday, the
Beat the Butcher promotion is held.
Ten lucky people will win a $25 meat tray
filled with delicious meat products from local
butcher McCormack’s Meats.
As with the Pot of Gold promotion, entry is
gained automatically with every $20 turnover.
So all you need to do is be there, sit back and
enjoy playing while waiting to see if you are
the lucky person to bring home this amazing
prize.
Terms and conditions do apply on all
promotions, so be sure to check out our website
for full details.
With so much going on in our Community
Gaming Room, the fun becomes irresistible.
So why not come along and try your luck out
for the chance to win some fantastic prizes.

REDCLIFFE CRUISE AND
TRAVEL CENTRE Est. 1948
WE all know that when we spend time at the
club, to catch up with friends and to enjoy
all that the club has to offer, it’s not hard to lose
track of time.
It is so easy to get caught up talking, eating and having
a good time. The last thing we want is to be interrupted
– especially not by closing time.
This is why we have extended our trading hours so that
now you can have a little bit more time every week to
enjoy at the club.
As you already know, in the past the club has closed at
1am every night. Now on Friday and Saturday nights we
will be open until 3am.
Heat is on in talent finals
THE Voice Your Talent
competition has been
responsible for unearthing
some incredible local talent.
We’ve heard some amazing voices
but as this month continues on, we
must get to the business end of the
competition – finals.
Heats finish on March 10 and this
means that from here on, it is country
and western themed songs only.
The semi-finals will be held on
March 17 and 24 and all competitors
on these nights are required to sing
and dress up in their best country and
western attire.
Following on from this is the
event we’ve all been waiting for, the
final. Held on the last day of March,
it’s a fantastic way to see the month
out.
Come along and allow yourself to
be entertained by some amazing
country talent and see for yourself
who the lucky winners will be.
Speaking of which, we definitely
believe that this talent and bravery
should not go unrewarded. So each
winner will receive a fantastic cash
prize.
First place will take home a cool
$1000 cash, second will receive
$500 and third will receive $200.
So whether you’d like to have a go
and show us your talent or whether
you’d prefer to show your support
for the brave performers, we’d love
to have you along.
We can’t wait to see you over here
ready to enjoy some fantastic country
music.
Take a tasty trip on us
WITH the year well and truly under way,
the Christmas holidays seem to be
slipping away quickly.
Wouldn’t it be nice to go back to that
relaxing holiday feeling with a short
break away?
We thought so too and that’s why
Bunny’s Family Restaurant and Koopa
Café are running the Tastes of Life
promotion, where three lucky winners
will receive travel vouchers to kick start
their perfect holiday getaway.
Imagine the possibilities those
vouchers could hold for you? Maybe
you’d like a weekend away to the beach,
surrounded by sand and surf.
Or maybe you’d prefer a trip to the
mountains to enjoy the peace and quiet,
surrounded by fresh air and beautiful
natural landscapes. The choices are
endless.
Entry into the competition is simple.
You will receive one entry with every $20
you spend in either Bunny’s Family
Just imagine how much more fun you could have with
that extra time at the weekends.
On every other day of the week, from Sunday until
Thursday, we will be open until 2am. These extended
hours allow you plenty of time to enjoy the nightlife and
the late night atmosphere in our club all throughout the
week.
We are very excited that we are now able to stay open
longer and we hope you are too.
We are thrilled to be able to offer everyone more time
to have fun on every day of the week. So no matter how
early or late you’d like to join us, we can’t wait to see you
here at the club.
Restaurant or Koopa Café.
The lucky winners will receive Flight
Centre vouchers valued at $500 for first
place, $200 for second and $100 for third.
The winners will be drawn at 7.30pm
on Wednesday, April 1 and entrants must
be here to win. So make sure you pack
your bags and head on over to give
yourself the best chance to win.
Calling bingo players
BINGO at Dolphins Bingo is always an
exciting event.
There are always plenty of people having
lots of fun while playing the game. But did you
know about the fantastic facilities that Dolphins
Bingo offer?
For those keen bingo players, it is the best
place to be. The hall itself is very spacious and
can accommodate large numbers of players.
There are plenty of tables and chairs, all
within clear view of numerous television
screens to make it easy to see the numbers
being called, no matter where you sit.
Dolphins Bingo also offers the fantastic new
PET machines. These machines can take the
place of your paper bingo tickets and can store
several games at once.
All you have to do is enter the number called
and the PET crosses it off on your games for
you. It will even let you know when you’re
close to a bingo.
However, the choice is yours as we also
offer the traditional paper tickets for those who
prefer the traditional way.
If that wasn’t enough, bingo has its own café
which sells a variety of delicious treats to help
you get through the games.
There is also a fully furnished outdoor deck
directly adjacent to the hall with all the required
technology for bingo players to continue
playing their game outside.
To top it all off, every player is welcome to
complementary tea or coffee throughout the
session.
So what are you waiting for? Come on over
and join us for all the bingo fun.
Dolphins lose great clubman
REDCLIFFE lost one of
its outstanding
citizens and characters
last month.
Bill Marsh was one of a
kind. I met him in my first
year at Redcliffe in 1975 and
a finer person you could not
wish to meet.
Bill was an outstanding
sportsman in his own right,
revelling in tennis, cricket and
golf and had an absolute
passion for rugby league, in
particular, the Redcliffe
Dolphins.
He rarely missed a home
game and also travelled to
watch his grandsons play the
game.
A legendary trawlerman on
the Peninsula, if anyone could
catch ‘em, Bill could.
Many stories could be told
of Bill’s fishing feats and his
boats, feats of staying afloat
and being held together with
wire.
Bill and his wife Bev have
been members of the Redcliffe
Leagues Club going back to
its very early days in the 70s
and would often visit our
• BILL Marsh.
club. A very dedicated and
justifiably proud family man,
the world is a better place for
having had Bill Marsh in it.
★ ★ ★ ★
THE club has decided to
honour those extraordinary
gentlemen who played first
grade in 1965, not just those
who played in the victorious
grand final side.
Over the weekend of
August 22-23, we will have
these troupers and their
partners as guests for a
dinner and at our game on
that weekend.
I would really appreciate
some help with finding some
contact details of Stuart
Northey, Rohan McNamara
and Nev McLean.
If anyone can help, please
contact me through the
club.
★ ★ ★ ★
BY the time we go to press
we should have a bit of an
idea of what the starting teams
for the year will be after a
couple of trial matches and
lots of training.
We are quietly confident
we will be much improved on
last year and we need to be
(improved I mean).
I won’t put any pressure on
any of the players by naming
those to look out for. I am
known to be a bit of a “Jonah”
when it comes to giving
someone a rap.
But going on our wins in all
three grades over Norths on
February 14 at Bishop Park,
the talent is there at the club
and now the coaching staff
have to harness it.
One observation did stand
out and that was Grant Cleal
and his staff have certainly
brought in some size and
power to our pack.
They were awesome
against the Devils, and if we
can stay injury free, can
hopefully give the Intrust
Super Cup a shake in 2015.
★ ★ ★ ★
SEASON ticket sales have
been healthy again this year.
Ticket holders who got in
early were invited to a
special meet the players day,
which was an excellent
opportunity for them.
It was great to meet so
many new supporters on the
day, as well as the return of
many long-term fans too.
But the savings and
special benefits continue for
those still thinking about
purchasing one.
The Combo ticket is only
$70 and will see you gain
entry at all our Intrust
Super Cup games, the 16s
and 18s home games,
Country Week and finals
that we may host.
That’s a bargain
considering there are well
over twice the number of
games of entry in your $70
then if you paid at the gate
each week. We’ve had an
extraordinary response to
our bigger packages this
year, which shows our
supporters really see the
value in what they receive.
DOLPHINS NEWS, MARCH 2015 — 3

Stadium will create jobs
ONE of the most
famous phrases used
by Bill Clinton during the
1992 presidential
campaign was the slogan
“It’s the economy, silly!”
Well, it wasn’t the word
silly but another harsher word
that I tell my kids not to say.
However it is the economy,
silly. Redcliffe has high youth
unemployment figures
therefore the creation of
unskilled jobs is a must.
Planning, building and
construction of the proposed
Dolphin Stadium is estimated
to create around 13,500 man
hours. That’s only the
beginning.
We estimate the injection
into the local economy would
be in the vicinity of $32
million per year.
This income will come
from visitors attending
sporting carnivals, NRL
games and trial matches,
touch football carnivals,
rugby 7 carnivals, rugby
league Nines, Oztag carnivals,
trade fairs, conventions,
expos, company displays,
product launches, maybe the
Crusty Demons Daredevils or
Monster Trucks, soccer events
such as the A-League and
entertainment specials.
The Dolphins will make it a
fortress during winter and the
Peninsula Power Soccer
(sponsored by our Leagues
Club) will have home games
during summer.
If we can attract visitors to
Redcliffe and they stay one,
two or three nights, then the
impact into the local economy
is significant.
A study for Stadiums
Queensland noted that the
economic impact created by
the state’s major footy codes
was estimated to be $341
million per annum and that
nearly half the economic
impact created came from
spending at pubs, clubs,
restaurants,
hotels
(accommodation), transport
and other services.
The regular home games of
the various teams created
2,050 jobs in catering,
security, grounds staff,
transport and venue staff. So
if that’s the case, then let’s
create some unskilled work
desperately needed in
Redcliffe.
The total of $341 million
divided by 2050 jobs equals
$166,341 for the creation of
one job. So if we have a spend
of $32 million divided by
$166,341, that equates to 192
Don’t worry!
Just bring it in to us
We’ll fix it like NEW...
SAME DAY!
unskilled positions created
throughout Redcliffe. The
benefits to the local economy
are enormous.
The taxman gets the extra
share in taxes and the
Redcliffe economy gets
spending from people outside
the Peninsula.
That extra spending from
visitors is directly injected
into local small businesses
which, in turn, up their
spending for daily items used
in the delivery of their goods
and services and it goes round
and round. It’s the economy.
As I say, bring on the rail,
bring on the stadium and the
Peninsula will never look
back. Just ask Stocklands!
On a final note, one of our
other great initiatives,
its founding innovator seeking
new challenges.
Membership will
repay all round
THE Redcliffe Leagues Club is a stunning facility, catering for a diversity of
tastes and interests and always offering friendly service.
However, there is even more to enjoy about
our club when you become a member.
When you sign up as a member, you
automatically have access to all our free
entertainment and you are able to enter all the
promotions and competitions we run for the
chance to win amazing prizes.
You will also receive fantastic discounts on
food and drinks within the club, which means
you can save the amount you spent on your
membership with your first purchase.
As a member, you will also receive a
birthday card in the month of your birthday,
which doubles as your entry into the birthday
card draw to win a year’s supply of fuel &/or
groceries (valued at $5,200).
The card also has discount vouchers for you
to use within the club to help you celebrate
your birthday.
Additionally, there is the members draw that
is held twice a week and gives you the chance
to win a minimum of $6000 cash.
If that wasn’t enough to get you excited,
there is also the Privilege Loyalty program
which you become a part of the moment you
become a member.
This loyalty system rewards you with every
dollar spent within the club by adding points to
your card. The more you spend, the more
points you win. You can then spend these
points anywhere in the club.
At just $11 for one year and $20 for five
years, the memberships are definitely worth
the price. The reasonable price and the fantastic
benefits make becoming a member irresistible.
So what are you waiting for? To join up
simply fill out a membership form and hand it
in to reception on your next trip in. We can’t
wait to see you around the club.
Congratulations to the Peninsula Private Hospital managers and staff for
the opening of their new Rehabilitation Facility.
We often take good health
for granted - like the ability
to move without pain.
But the trauma that people
recovering from surgery or
illness may experience can
be overwhelming.
One of the GPs at Peninsula
Private operated on my jaw about 14 years ago, and I am so grateful for her
professionalism and guidance throughout the surgery and my recovery.
Peninsula Private should be proud of its $2mil investment because it will
change people’s lives. I wish the staff and patients all the best.
In April, we will commemorate 100 years since Gallipoli, and the heroism
of our Australian servicemen and women. Ahead of this anniversary,
I would like to congratulate the Redcliffe RSL on its successful application for
an Anzac Centenary Commemoration Grant. The service club will use the
grant to erect a commemorative plinth at Anzac Place, Redcliffe.
Bowl along for
taste of cricket
AT Dolphins HQ, we love our cricket and this month we’re excited because
we’re celebrating the Cricket World Cup.
We love watching our Aussie cricketers battle
it out against some of the world’s toughest
competition.
We soar with excitement
as our boys take a wicket or
score a century and we suffer
the disappointment when
things don’t go our way. But
win or lose, we’re proud of
our team and we stand by
them as they play for our
country.
But this event does more
than show our incredible
Aussie cricket talent. It brings
together 14 of the world’s
best cricketing countries,
right in our very own backyard.
And we thought, while these teams are
experiencing all our country has to offer, why
don’t we experience a bit of theirs? That’s why
Dolphins HQ is thrilled to host the World Cup
Fever buffet every Thursday night.
The menu will feature some
amazing meals from all over
the world. So while we watch
our boys take on their competition,
we can sit back, relax
and enjoy the cuisine from all
over the world.
Be sure to check the menu
online to discover which cuisine
you can sample on which
night.
Mains and desserts will be
available, and at just $24.90
for members and $29.90 for
non-members, it is the perfect
way to experience a small
taste of the world.
So why not come along to get involved in
the cultural experience that is the Cricket
World Cup.
Footy tipping’s back in 2015
THE Dolphins footy tipping
competition is back bigger and
better than ever in 2015.
Utilising the Redcliffe Dolphin free app
platform for your Smartphone or tablet, you
can now make your weekly NRL rugby league
tips easier than ever before.
Downloading the app is simple and
straightforward, simply search Redcliffe
Dolphins in the Apple or Google Play stores
and soon as you know it, you’ll be enjoying all
the endless benefits the app has to offer.
The app itself houses every Dolphins
enterprise in one convenient spot, available
anywhere, anytime: from the latest
entertainment and dining options at the club, to
Dolphins TV videos and match reports at the
footy club; timetables and PT trainers at the
Dolphins Health Precinct, shop opening hours
at Dolphins Central, plus jackpots and step by
step guide to Dolphins Bingo.
Once you’re in the app itself, tap on the
Leagues Club selection, followed by
Promotions. You’ll find the NRL Footy
Tipping Comp ’15 conveniently located
directly at the top of the listing.
From here, read the instructions thoroughly
and scroll down to register your details.
Entry is free and open to anyone 18 years
and older with the advisement prizes must be
collected in person. There are heaps of prizes
up for grabs from first, second, third and even
if you come in at last place, you still walk away
with a great prize. Plus new this year is our
knockout competition winner.
The benefits of using this latest technology
are endless. Now your tips don’t lock out until
five minutes before each match’s scheduled
kick-off time.
So instead of missing an entire round, now
you could just miss the opening match or two
for the weekend and still not fall behind thanks
to how the away teams might go on the night.
You may even come out better off in some
cases as we all know.
There is also the added knockout competition
this year in which a player selects a club each
round that he believes is sure to win.
The catch is you can’t pick the same team
two weeks in a row, and once you get it wrong,
you’re out.
Last man/woman standing will walk away
with two cartons of Corona for their efforts.
Not a bad little incentive right there.
Pick the margin is another aspect of the
competition. This feature allows us to settle
any tied result disputes which may arise
towards the latter end of the competition.
Tie that aspect with the added Joker round
feature and all results are sure to go down to
the wire come September.
The Joker feature allows players to select
one round throughout the competition to
double their score on. This benefit cannot be
taken lightly considering there’s also a bonus
five points up for grab for a perfect round.
That’s a possible 26 points up for grabs still in
round 26.
It’s anybody’s game. Registrations are open
now, so don’t delay. Should you not have a
Smartphone or tablet device, please see our
friendly reception staff for assistance.
They will be more than happy to walk you
through the steps on one of the two stationed
iPads available. Don’t fret if you’re a late
entrant, you’ll receive any away results for the
matches you’ve missed out on.
Round 1 starts on Thursday, March 5. See
you in the game.
SEEING that on occasions I’m one to sit behind the desk for long periods of time, but mind you I’m sure
some people sit behind their well-oiled slab of oak from dusk to dawn.
Anyway I thought I would do some
research to advise some of the risks
associated with focusing on the grind we
are all challenged with.
Consider this your daily reminder to
get off your butt: Being sedentary may be
twice as dangerous as being obese,
according to a new study from the
University of Cambridge.
Researchers tracked more than
334,000 people for 12 years and
compared activity levels and weights
among the subjects who died during that
time.
They calculated how many deaths
could have been avoided if all the
participants had been more active versus
at a healthy weight and determined that
physical activity could have saved twice
as many people as weight loss.
How is sitting so fatal? It increases
your risk for the diseases responsible for
the majority of deaths, including heart
disease, diabetes, and some cancers, says
study co-author Soren Brage, Ph.D., head
of the physical activity epidemiology
program at Cambridge.
Exercise, on the other hand, protects
you from those same illnesses by
lowering your blood pressure and the
levels of fat, sugars, and insulin in your
blood. So no matter how jam-packed
your day is, remember to move. Just 20
minutes a day of brisk walking lowered
the study participants’ risk of early death
by 30 percent.
“I think it would be hard for most
people to argue that they cannot find
even 20 minutes in a whole day of 1440
minutes to do something for their own
health benefit,” says Brage.
“There are lots of ways to accumulate
activity throughout the day, even if you
are very busy. Take the stairs or park
Of course, you don’t have to call it a
Now this has only just touched the
surface but it does shed some light on
something we all need to consider. Get
further away. It all adds up.”
day after 20 minutes of walking.
Doubling that level of activity resulted in
additional benefits, the researchers
found.
off your butt!
Redcliffe Old Boys
THE Old Boys again provided a sausage
Some of our members tell me it was their
25th year in a row. It was great to see so
many of our future stars signing up to play
this great game.
I hope all the boys and girls have a
wonderful season with lots of fun, new
Our club this year has welcomed back
• DOLPHINS Alex Bishop, left, and Bobbie Goulding train on Dolphin Oval for the start of the Intrust Super Cup season.
English imports
will add flavour
THE British are coming
… well, actually, they
are already here on the
Peninsula.
While other Intrust Super
Cup clubs have had a
smattering of English players
over the past couple of years,
the Dolphins were restricted
to fullback Louis Sheriff last
year.
However in the off-season,
Bobbie Goulding Jr, a former
English Super League half
with Wakefield, turned up at
Dolphin Oval, along with
Widnes Vikings pair Alex
Brown and Adam Lawton.
Goulding played in the
NSW Cup last season with
Roosters offshoot Newtown
after leaving cash-strapped
Wakefield when they failed to
finalise a promised contract.
His father was one of
England’s greatest halfbacks,
a confident and creative
playmaker with a booming
kicking game.
He made his first grade
debut at 16 for Wigan in 1988
• TOMMY Bishop
and at 18 was the youngest
British Lions tourist.
Goulding has fitted in well
at Dolphin Oval and was in
the first-grade squad last
month named for the trial
against Norths, although he
has Luke Capewell in front of
him for the No. 7 jersey.
And also resident at
Dolphin Oval is a player with
almost as regal a English
league background.
Hooker Alex Bishop is the
grandson of famed Great
Britain halfback Tommy
Bishop, who left England in
1969 for Cronulla before
finishing his playing career
with Brisbane Norths.
Alex, who has just turned
21, played the final four
fixtures of last season in
Redcliffe’s top side but knows
that is no guarantee of a first
grade berth in 2015.
“I love playing in the top
side,” he said. “It was very
tough but I enjoyed it. I
actually came into the side as
hooker after playing halfback
in the FOGS Cup side.
“I like both positions and
I’m happy to play either as I
enjoy them both.
“As I see it there’s five
hookers in the running this
season, including myself and
Hayden Hansen from last
season.
The other three are Darcy
Etrich from CQ and Dragons
pair Shane Pumipi and Logan
Harris.
“There’s a real influx of
new players and competition
wise we all will have to work
hard for our spots.
“There can’t be any excuses
and after last season it was the
way the club had to go.
“The pre-season has been
tough under Tony Guilfoyle.
It’s the first one I’ve had with
him and it has been a real
wake-up call. He certainly has
a great knowledge of the
science behind our program.”
Alex, who won best back in
FOGS A grade last season,
heads into his fifth season in
the red and white after joining
from Norths Aspley.
He spent three seasons in
Colts from 2011-2013,
including the 2012
premiership season under
current top grade coach Troy
Lindsay and Steve Cherry.
Alex’s father Gary played
at Brisbane Norths before
heading back to England with
Kent Invicta and Oldham
while his uncle Neil was a
long-time Dolphins junior
development officer. Alex’s
cousin Hayden is now with
the Sharks’ under 18 Jersey
Flegg side.
Meanwhile Alex has been
• BOBBIE Goulding Senior.
studying for an education
degree at university, although
he intends to switch to
nutrition next year.
“All the English boys came
to my 21st and they could all
relate to things back home
with my granddad,” he said.
“I think my dad and
Bobbie’s dad had played
together and everyone knew
of my granddad.
“He’s not going too bad for
an old battered footballer and
sees the majority of my
games. He’s going OK. I’ve
been to Britain but it was
when I was two so can’t
remember a thing.”
