MRS. EDWIN BOOTH<br />
(Mary M. McVicker)<br />
Mary M. McVicker, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> little daughter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> James H.<br />
McVicker, was born <strong>in</strong> 1848. She appeared <strong>on</strong> her<br />
fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r's stage <strong>in</strong> her tenth year. So pleased were <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
audiences with her play<strong>in</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> little Eva, "<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> angel<br />
child," and o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r parts, as well as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> charm<strong>in</strong>g quality<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> her s<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g voice, that she did much to help her<br />
fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first difficult years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his undertak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> Chicago.<br />
When Edw<strong>in</strong> Booth opened his new <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>atre <strong>in</strong> New<br />
1869, Mary McVicker, at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> age<br />
York, <strong>on</strong> February 3,<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> eighteen, played Juliet to his Romeo.<br />
Mr. Booth fell<br />
<strong>in</strong> love with her, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y were married <strong>on</strong> June 7, 1869.<br />
This was Mr. Booth's sec<strong>on</strong>d marriage, and to his little<br />
eight year old daughter, Edw<strong>in</strong>a, Mrs. Booth made a<br />
good mo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r. Although Mrs. Booth did not aga<strong>in</strong> appear<br />
<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> stage after her marriage, but devoted herself to<br />
her husband and her home, she <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten took notes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> how<br />
and why Mr. Booth did certa<strong>in</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> course <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
his performances.<br />
When, <strong>in</strong> later years, her health failed, and she became<br />
an <strong>in</strong>valid, Edw<strong>in</strong>a took her mo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r's place <strong>in</strong> social<br />
and household duties. In a letter written by Mr.<br />
Booth to <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his friends, he said <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his wife: "Her<br />
great pluck keeps her up and about, but she is a very<br />
sick woman, hav<strong>in</strong>g lost her voice and much flesh, and<br />
she suffers great pa<strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>stantly."<br />
Mrs. Booth died November 13, 1881, when <strong>on</strong>ly<br />
thirty-three years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age.
