LUCY LARCOM<br />

Lucy Larcom was born March 5, 1824, at Beverly,<br />

Massachusetts, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> youngest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> n<strong>in</strong>e children.<br />

Her childhood was spent here, till her fa<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, a retired<br />

shipmaster, died <strong>in</strong> 1835, and left his family without resources.<br />

They decided to move to Lowell where work<br />

was more easily obta<strong>in</strong>ed. Lucy worked <strong>in</strong> a factory and<br />

became <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most popular c<strong>on</strong>tributors to "The<br />

Lowell Offer<strong>in</strong>g," a magaz<strong>in</strong>e c<strong>on</strong>ducted by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> factory<br />

girls, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>reby w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> acqua<strong>in</strong>tance and friendship<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> poet, Whittier.<br />

In 1846, she came to Ill<strong>in</strong>ois with her married sister,<br />

to earn her liv<strong>in</strong>g teach<strong>in</strong>g school. She taught for some<br />

time, and for three years was a student at M<strong>on</strong>ticello<br />

Sem<strong>in</strong>ary, at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same time teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> preparatory<br />

department <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> school. She was M<strong>on</strong>ticello 's poetess<br />

and <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> her most dist<strong>in</strong>guished Alumnae. She graduated<br />

<strong>in</strong> June, 1852, her essay be<strong>in</strong>g entitled "The Hearthst<strong>on</strong>e<br />

and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Universe. '<br />

She returned to Beverly to teach, and later went to<br />

Wheat<strong>on</strong> Sem<strong>in</strong>ary at Nort<strong>on</strong>. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> midst <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> her work<br />

she found time to write some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> her best known poems,<br />

chief am<strong>on</strong>g which is "Hannah B<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g Shoes."<br />

In 1862, <strong>on</strong> account <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ill health, she gave up teach<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

and devoted herself entirely to literature. She was<br />

editor <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> "Our Young Folks" for some years. In 1868<br />

she published her first collecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> poems.<br />

Miss Larcom 's health gradually failed, and she died<br />

April 17, 1893, <strong>in</strong> Bost<strong>on</strong>. She was buried <strong>in</strong> her native<br />

town <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Beverly.
