MRS. JULIAN MONSON STURTEVANT<br />
(Elizabeth Maria Fayerwea<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r)<br />
Mrs. Elizabeth F. Sturtevant was born <strong>in</strong> New<br />
Canaan, C<strong>on</strong>necticut, <strong>in</strong> 1806. Her mo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r was a sister<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Rev. James Richards, D. D., <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Auburn Theological<br />
Sem<strong>in</strong>ary.<br />
When twenty years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age, Miss Fayerwea<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r met<br />
Mr. Julian M. Sturtevant <strong>in</strong> New Canaan, where he had<br />
come to teach. The acqua<strong>in</strong>tance c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ued a year before<br />
he made known his feel<strong>in</strong>gs toward her.<br />
Mr. Sturtevant, with o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs, became pledged to go<br />
as a home missi<strong>on</strong>ary to some fr<strong>on</strong>tier state or territory.<br />
He was <strong>in</strong>vited to go to Jacks<strong>on</strong>ville, Ill<strong>in</strong>ois, where a<br />
college was to be established. He laid his plan before<br />
Miss Fayerwea<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r as it <strong>in</strong>volved her life as well as his<br />
own. She was a woman <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> rare thoughtfulness, and cheerfully<br />
approved <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plan.<br />
Of her Mr. Sturtevant said:<br />
"She was em<strong>in</strong>ently<br />
qualified by sound and cool judgment, and by her firstrate<br />
comm<strong>on</strong> sense, to be my wise adviser as well as to be<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> head and ornament <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> my home."<br />
In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> early morn<strong>in</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> August 31, 1829, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> young<br />
couple were united <strong>in</strong> marriage. After many try<strong>in</strong>g experiences<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y reached Jacks<strong>on</strong>ville <strong>on</strong> November 15,<br />
1829. Five children were born to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m, two <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> whom<br />
died when small.<br />
Mrs. Sturtevant, with o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r wives <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> early teachers<br />
<strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> college, was <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> great assistance <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> struggle<br />
Her life <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> service was cut<br />
to establish Ill<strong>in</strong>ois College.<br />
short when she passed away <strong>on</strong> February 12, 1840, when<br />
about thirty-three years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age.
