Nancy Green Stice, daughter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nancy Wils<strong>on</strong> and<br />

Andrew Stice, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Revoluti<strong>on</strong>ary stock, was born <strong>in</strong> Bowl<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Green, Kentucky, September 23, 1807, and died <strong>in</strong><br />

Warren County, Ill<strong>in</strong>ois, May 14, 1906.<br />

In 1816 her family removed to Madis<strong>on</strong> county, Ill<strong>in</strong>ois<br />

Territory, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re she married Andrew Terry.<br />

After his death <strong>in</strong> 1836 she removed to Warren county,<br />

Ill<strong>in</strong>ois. In 1844 she married Major John C. B<strong>on</strong>d, an<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ficer <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Black Hawk War, also <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Revoluti<strong>on</strong>ary<br />

blood.<br />

Mrs. B<strong>on</strong>d came to Ill<strong>in</strong>ois <strong>on</strong> horseback, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> family<br />

possessi<strong>on</strong>s be<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>veyed <strong>in</strong> a covered wag<strong>on</strong>, drawn by<br />

an ox team, when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was not a railroad <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> state,<br />

and she lived to see <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> automobile and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> airplane.<br />

As a pi<strong>on</strong>eer woman she placated <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Indians, nursed<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sick, mo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>red <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> orphans, laid out <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dead. She<br />

and her husband at different periods cared for forty<br />

children besides <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir own. Many <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se were clo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>d<br />

from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> raw material.<br />

She spun and wove, carded <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wool and did <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sew<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Their home was noted, even <strong>in</strong> those pi<strong>on</strong>eer days,<br />

for its bountiful hospitality. A letter is <strong>in</strong> existence<br />

tell<strong>in</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir Christmas d<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>in</strong> 1859 when sixty-five<br />

relatives and friends were present.<br />

At Camp Meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

times, noth<strong>in</strong>g was thought <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> hav<strong>in</strong>g thirty-five or forty<br />

for d<strong>in</strong>ner.<br />

Born dur<strong>in</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> adm<strong>in</strong>istrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Thomas Jeffers<strong>on</strong>,<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g under that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Theodore Roosevelt, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> life <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mrs.<br />

B<strong>on</strong>d spanned a marvelous period <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> our state and nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

history.
