MRS. WILLIAM WHITE<br />

(Julia Mariah Hart)<br />

Julia Mariah White, daughter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Julius Caesar and<br />

Ca<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<strong>in</strong>e Carroll Hart, was born March 18, 1827, near<br />

Cant<strong>on</strong>, Ohio. When she was twenty years old, she was<br />

granted a teacher's certificate. After teach<strong>in</strong>g a year,<br />

<strong>in</strong> December, 1848, she married Samuel Russell. She had<br />

<strong>on</strong>e s<strong>on</strong>, Homer Russell. Late <strong>in</strong> 1850, she was divorced<br />

<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> grounds <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> cruelty.<br />

In 1856 she came to Ill<strong>in</strong>ois, near Fairfield, and began<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Wayne County <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same year. On February<br />

28, 1859, she married William White. A s<strong>on</strong>, Julius<br />

White, was born <strong>in</strong> 1861, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same year, Mr. White<br />

enlisted <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uni<strong>on</strong> army. He was wounded and was<br />

very sick. After much plead<strong>in</strong>g, Mrs. White was permitted<br />

to go to her husband. She nursed him to c<strong>on</strong>valescence,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n began nurs<strong>in</strong>g o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r men. Late <strong>in</strong> 1863<br />

both Mr. and Mrs. White returned to Ill<strong>in</strong>ois. Mrs.<br />

White renewed her certificate and began teach<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>,<br />

her husband be<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>valid till his death <strong>in</strong> 1885.<br />

Mrs. White was a pi<strong>on</strong>eer bus<strong>in</strong>ess woman, work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

under discourag<strong>in</strong>g c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for her country and her<br />

family. She was known and loved as "Aunt Jane<br />

Mariah" by four generati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> relatives and friends.<br />

Mrs. Julia Mariah White died March 18, 1925, at<br />

Fairfield, Ill<strong>in</strong>ois, at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> age <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> n<strong>in</strong>ety-eight, still active,<br />

both mentally and physically.
