(Ca<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<strong>in</strong>e Geers)<br />
Ca<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<strong>in</strong>e Geers Yates was born <strong>in</strong> Lex<strong>in</strong>gt<strong>on</strong>, Kentucky,<br />
<strong>on</strong> September 22, 1822, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> daughter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> William<br />
and Mary (Watk<strong>in</strong>s) Geers. With her parents she came<br />
to Ill<strong>in</strong>ois <strong>in</strong> 1830, and received her educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> Jacks<strong>on</strong>ville.<br />
On July 9, 1839, she was married to Richard Yates,<br />
before she was seventeen years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> age. To <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m were<br />
born five children, <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> whom is now liv<strong>in</strong>g, Richard<br />
Yates, Jr., C<strong>on</strong>gressman-at-Large, Wash<strong>in</strong>gt<strong>on</strong>, D. C.<br />
Mrs. Yates was a woman <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> decided christian character.<br />
She was unostentatious <strong>in</strong> manner, ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> highest respect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all who knew her. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
four years <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> bloody strife, when her husband was Governor,<br />
her faith comforted him and helped to keep him<br />
from falter<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his course. She was beloved by both<br />
soldiers and civilians.<br />
While Mr. Yates was <strong>in</strong> C<strong>on</strong>gress, she shared <strong>in</strong> all<br />
his social h<strong>on</strong>ors and political triumphs. One <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> her<br />
treasured keepsakes was a little faded cockade presented<br />
to her by General Scott, at a d<strong>in</strong>ner party at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
White House, at which he escorted her to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> table.<br />
Though many sorrows came <strong>in</strong>to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> life <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mrs.<br />
Yates, she yet proved <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a sweet and lov<strong>in</strong>g spirit, and<br />
well merited <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pride <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> be<strong>in</strong>g taken back <strong>in</strong> her old<br />
days, by her s<strong>on</strong>,
