Mrs. Maud Powell Turner was born August 22, 1868,<br />
<strong>in</strong> Peru, Ill<strong>in</strong>ois, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> daughter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> W. Bramwell and M<strong>in</strong>nie<br />
(Paul) Powell. She was a niece <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> John W. Powell,<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> famous Director <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> United States Geological<br />
Survey. Her comm<strong>on</strong> school educati<strong>on</strong> was obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong><br />
She studied music <strong>in</strong> Chicago, and at<br />
Aurora, Ill<strong>in</strong>ois.<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> age <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> thirteen she went abroad to study at Leipzig,<br />
Paris and Berl<strong>in</strong>, where she was a pupil <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Joachim. Before<br />
her return to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> United States, she gave several c<strong>on</strong>certs<br />
before royalty <strong>in</strong> England and Russia, by command.<br />
Her New York debut was made with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Philharm<strong>on</strong>ic<br />
Society, when she was sixteen years old.<br />
She was soloist with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> orchestras <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Thomas, Seidl,<br />
Nikisch and Damrosch. She accompanied <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> New York<br />
Ari<strong>on</strong> Club <strong>on</strong> its tour <strong>in</strong> Germany and Austria. In 1899-<br />
1901 she toured <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> British Isles and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> European c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ent.<br />
Her play<strong>in</strong>g was marked by <strong>in</strong>telligent <strong>in</strong>terpretati<strong>on</strong>,<br />
an unusual purity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> t<strong>on</strong>e, and adequate technique.<br />
Many critics regarded her as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world's most<br />
talented <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> women viol<strong>in</strong>ists. She was also a c<strong>on</strong>tributor<br />
<strong>on</strong> musical topics to various Journals.<br />
In 1904, Maud Powell was married to H. Godfrey<br />
Turner <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> L<strong>on</strong>d<strong>on</strong>.<br />
When play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cert at St. Louis, <strong>in</strong> 1919, she<br />
collapsed, and for twenty-four hours hovered between<br />
life and death. She recovered, however, and c<strong>on</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ued<br />
her tour. The follow<strong>in</strong>g January, at Uni<strong>on</strong>town, Pennsylvania,<br />
she suffered a nervous breakdown, and died <strong>in</strong><br />
that city, at a hotel, <strong>on</strong> January 8, 1920.
