MRS. OLIVER MARCY<br />
(Elizabeth Eunice Smith)<br />
Mrs. Elizabeth E. Marcy was born December 22,<br />
1821, at East Hampt<strong>on</strong>, C<strong>on</strong>necticut, daughter <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Nathaniel Clark and Charlotte (Str<strong>on</strong>g) Smith. She was<br />
a direct descendant <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Elder William Brewster and<br />
Stephen Hopk<strong>in</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mayflower fame. She was educated<br />
<strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> public schools, private schools, and later <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Wesleyan Academy at Wilbraham, Massachusetts. She<br />
taught school, and was a creditable art student.<br />
On July 2, 1847, she married Pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>essor Oliver Marcy,<br />
a teacher <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Academy. Four children were born to<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m. In September, 1862, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y moved to Evanst<strong>on</strong>,<br />
where Pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>essor Marcy had accepted a positi<strong>on</strong>. Here<br />
Mrs. Marcy found time for public service <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> an endur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
sort.<br />
She was an active and <strong>in</strong>fluential worker <strong>in</strong><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Woman's Foreign Missi<strong>on</strong>ary and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Woman's<br />
Home Missi<strong>on</strong>ary societies <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Methodist Episcopal<br />
church from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir organizati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
In c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with her work <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Home Missi<strong>on</strong>ary<br />
society, Mrs. Marcy undertook to found what is<br />
known as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Elizabeth E. Marcy Home <strong>in</strong> <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
destitute secti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chicago. The home is c<strong>on</strong>ducted as<br />
a sort <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> religious settlement and is a center <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> acknowledged<br />
help and usefulness.<br />
Mrs. Marcy was also <strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> founders <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Woman's Christian Temperance Uni<strong>on</strong>. She bel<strong>on</strong>ged<br />
to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Daughters <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> American Revoluti<strong>on</strong>, and was<br />
eligible to membership <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Col<strong>on</strong>ial Dames.<br />
Mrs. Marcy has written many pamphlets c<strong>on</strong>cern<strong>in</strong>g<br />
philanthropic work, and many hymns, some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which<br />
have been used <strong>in</strong> Methodist Hymnals throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
world. Her death occurred <strong>in</strong> 1911.
