Our business Energy Development &Services Apioneer project in LNG Aker Solutions designed and managed the development of the Adriatic liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility, the world’s first offshore LNG receiving and regasification terminal, for ExxonMobil. Our scope covered the entire terminal project including engineering, procurement, construction management, assembly and hook-up, marine operations and offshore completion. The terminal consists of a concrete gravity base structure (GBS), two LNG tanks, topsides facilities and two concrete mooring dolphins. Tenpercent of Italy’s gas consumption will be supplied from this man-made island. The Adriatic LNG terminal is the first of its kind and represents an international milestone. All previous LNG terminals have been installed onshore. This pioneer project has been made possible by combining Aker Solutions’ leading marine concrete technology and regasification expertise with our broad offshore experience. The terminal was constructed and assembled in adry dock in Pioneer project delivered in 2008. Algeciras, Spain. Then we relocated the entire structure, towing it to the final destination in the Adriatic Sea, 17 km off the coast of Venice in Italy. The location was chosen with the particular aim of ensuring the terminal is not visible from shore. Moving the completed terminal from Spain to Italy was amajor marine operation, carried out by Aker Solutions. The 1700 nautical mile trip to the Adriatic took three weeks and used four large, oceangoing tugs. The project focus following installation has been on the hookup and completion works for the topsides. Initial operation of the terminal –LNG cool-down –is planned for the first quarter of 2009. The terminal will be owned and operated by Adriatic LNG, ajoint venturecomprising 45 percent Qatar Petroleum, 45 percent ExxonMobil and ten percent Edison. Drilling into the future Aker Solutions’ assembly yard at StordinNorway dedicated most of 2008 to completing the two Aker H-6e “extreme” drilling rigs, Aker Spitsbergen and Aker Barents for customer Aker Drilling. They are the biggest, most advanced semisubmersible drilling rigs in the world and can operate for decades to come in the world’s most challenging waters. The Aker H-6e design is intended both for worldwide deepwater operations and for harsh environments. It is configured for dynamic positioning in water depths of up to 3000 metres. The designers’ environmental goals have been that there will be no harmful discharges from the rigs to the sea and very low emissions to the atmosphere. The rigs are designed to use so-called “green” chemicals, substances without harmful effects on the environment, and are equipped with state-of-the-art waste management systems. The rigs are also fully winterised: their equipment and systems can operate down to -20°C. Fully heated and air-conditioned living quarters, with single bed cabins as well as dining and recreational facilities, make the working environment onboard the rigs unique. With our new generation of drilling rigs, Aker Solutions enables the offshoredrilling industry to operate in a safe and environmentally friendly way in the most challenging surroundings. At the project’s peak, around 4500 people from 40 nations were involved in the assembly. With such alarge, multinational work force, communication was areal challenge. To meet the challenge, the project embraced four “official” languages: Norwegian, English, Polish and Russian. State-of-the-art drilling rigs.
