Our business Subsea Down in the ultra-deep An increasing percentage of future subsea production is expected to occur in ultra-deep waters. Suppliers to the world’soil and gas companies continue to push the development of technologies to make production moreeconomic with less risk. Aker Solutions has been in aleading position in this evolving market for many years. One of the milestones in this area of excellence for Aker Solutions is Petrobras’ Cascade &Chinook project in the Gulf of Mexico. We are delivering 65 kilometreofpower and control umbilicals for this subsea development in water depths of 2700 metres. The medium-voltage power umbilicals will be tied back to an FPSO at 2500 metres water depth, making these the deepest ever dynamic power umbilicals. Traditional power umbilical design has relied on steel reinforcement. At greater depths, steel becomes counter-productive as increasing weight causes unacceptable strain in the umbilical. At water depths of more than 2000 metres, new ideas wererequired. Our talented engineers came up with the innovative idea of using carbon fibre reinforcement rods instead of steel. This met the challenge of strengthening the umbilical with minimum added weight, acrucial combination for ultra-deep water umbilical design. Another challenge presented by the Cascade &Chinook power umbilicals is the connection to the FPSO, the first ever deployed in the Gulf of Mexico. The power umbilicals are designed to connect to a buoy mounted at the bottom of the FPSO. In the event of atropical storm, the buoy will detach from the FPSO and drop, along with the umbilicals, to apredetermined water depth, allowing the host vessel to retreat to safety. Here again the role of the carbon fibre rods is important, as they make the umbilicals more capable of handling the load without being damaged. This innovative design has been patented by Aker Solutions. The power umbilicals are scheduled for delivery to Petrobras in late 2009. Marine operations –into the deep Aker Solutions successfully executed their first major marine operations contract in the Gulf of Mexico, the Blind Faith project for the Chevron group, in 2008. The Blind Faith deepwater development is asemisubmersible platform located in Mississippi Canyon block 650, approximately 162 miles south east of New Orleans, in 6500 feet (2 000 metres) water depth. The offshore facility, which is Chevron’sdeepest, achieved first oil on 11 November 2008 and is designed to produce 65 000 barrels of crude oil and 55 million cubic feet of gas per day. This complex delivery demonstrates our leadership on this new deepwater frontier. The project introduced the BOA Sub Coffshore construction vessel to the Gulf of Mexico in October 2007, and together with BOA Deep C, the two state-of-the-art multi-purpose offshore construction vessels worked in tandem to meet the requirements of this demanding project. The scope of the project was divided into several phases, including five separate major mobilisations to gather vessels, equipment and personnel in port for the different transport and installation marine operations. The complete scope of work included engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), delivery of the off-hull mooring components, transportation of the hull from Norway to Texas, and transportation of the topside facilities from Louisiana to Texas. The offshore installation included suction piles and mooring components and asubsea system, including subsea trees, manifold, umbilical jumpers, and flying leads. The semisubmersible platform was towed from Ingleside, Texas, out to the Gulf of Mexico for final mooring and hook-up, prior to the steel catenary risers and umbilicals being installed and tied in to the platform production system. Numerous cross-functional groups within Aker Solutions collaborated to successfully deliver the project. Aker Solutions strengthened its subsea installation capabilities through acquiring 100 percent ownership of Aker Marine Contractors ASin 2008. Two state-of-the-art deepwater construction vessels –BOA Deep Cand BOA Sub C–are chartered by Aker Solutions. 28 Aker Solutions annual report 2008
