Long term growth opportunities
Despite some short-term market uncertainties,
India has high ambitions for its
chemicals sector and targets to more than
double it from 2008 to 2015. We hold an
exceptionally good position to serve this
growing market.
We also see that the fundamentals are
in place for future long-term growth in
China. We have agood order backlog for
2009 and are well positioned to capitalise
when the market regains momentum. Our
next step will be to further broaden our
offering within specialty and consumer
chemicals in China, giving us access to an
even larger market.
Reducing emissions. Aker Solutions
has more than 30years’ experience
delivering proven sulphuric acid technology
and proprietary acid plant equipment to
base metals producers worldwide.
Continued focus on niches
Though investment decisions are being
deferred in the Middle East, we arestrengthening
our offering from our operations in
Saudi Arabia. At the same time, in Europe
we are looking to selectively expand our
footprint into Russia and Kazakhstan.
In mature regions like North America
and Europe we will continue to serve the
needs of our key accounts, and focus on
niches with growth potential. These include
service and modification work, biofuels,
power generation, nuclear decommissioning
and construction. Whilst construction
in the US is not expected to grow in the
downstream sector,weare well positioned
within the power sector with strong project
execution experience.
Over more than 45 years in nuclear
services in the UK we have accumulated
valuable experience in waste management
and decommissioning. With our global
presence we see opportunities in the
longer term to take this specialised expertise
to countries such as the US, South
Africa, China and India.
Strong customer relationships. Under
afive year framework contract with
Deutsche BP AG, Aker Solutions is
providing engineering and construction
management services atthe
Erdöl-Raffinerie Emsland (BP -Lingen)
production facility in Germany.
Aker Solutions is providing the
detailed engineering and proprietary
equipment supply for Doe
Run Peru’s copper line acid plant
project located in the Andean city
of La Oroya, 150 km east of Lima,
Peru at an elevation of 3800
metres. The project is part of a
USD 400 million investment by
Doe Run Peru at La Oroya to
modernise its smelting operation.
Amajor portion of this investment
is dedicated to HSE components
which, when complete in October
2009, will bring the operations at
La Oroya into full compliance
with new environmental emission
standards mandated by the
Peruvian Government.
Doe Run Peru’s operation at La
Oroya is acustom smelter
producing commodity and precious
metals (copper, lead, zinc, silver
and gold). The city of La Oroya has
grown up around this 70 year old
facility. Doe Run has been steadily
investing in improving conditions at
and around the site and in the local
community since it acquired the
facility ten years ago. The culmination
of these efforts is the present
modernisation project.
The HSE components include
improvements to the existing zinc
line acid plant and effluent treatment
facilities; abrand new acid plant for
its lead smelter and abrand new
acid plant for its copper smelter.
The copper line acid plant is the
largest of the three La Oroya acid
plants at 1000 tonnes per day of
sulphuric acid production from
smelter stack gases. It will come
online in the third quarter of 2009.
With all three acid plants in operation
Doe Run will be in full compliance
with government-mandated
requirements; capturing more than
80% of all sulphuric acid gas emissions
resulting from its operations.
The copper line acid plant detail
design was executed by Aker
Solutions from our Vancouver
office. It is astate-of-the-art double
contact, double absorption acid
plant incorporating our industryleading
technology and proprietary
equipment, manufactured at our
equipment division in Toronto,
Ontario, Canada.
In addition to detailed design
and proprietary equipment,
Aker Solutions is also providing
on-site advisory services for plant
construction, check-out and
commissioning through our office
in Lima.
