Luxury Car Tax on the agenda<br />
The <strong>MTA</strong>’s continued<br />
lobbying for changes to the<br />
Luxury Car Tax were on top of<br />
the agenda in a recent meeting<br />
with Shadow Opposition<br />
Treasurer Joe Hockey.<br />
<strong>MTA</strong> Executive Director,<br />
John Chapman told Mr<br />
Hockey that the Luxury Car<br />
Tax was discriminatory given<br />
that no other tax applied to<br />
luxury goods such as boats and<br />
jewellery.<br />
“We need to keep reinforcing<br />
the point that this tax is<br />
unfair – particularly as we head<br />
towards an election this year,”<br />
Mr Chapman said.<br />
Mr Hockey noted the <strong>MTA</strong>’s<br />
concerns and that in any event<br />
the current Luxury Car Tax<br />
threshold should be lifted from<br />
its current level of $57,180.<br />
Tax of 33 per cent is payable<br />
on the amount above the<br />
threshold subject to a few minor<br />
exemptions.<br />
The <strong>MTA</strong>’s position on the<br />
Luxury Car Tax was reinforced<br />
later in the day when <strong>MTA</strong><br />

the opening of the Member<br />
for Mayo, Jamie Briggs’ new<br />
electorate office.<br />
