MTA Executive Director, John Chapman told Mr Hockey that the Luxury Car Tax was discriminatory given that no other tax applied to luxury goods such as boats and jewellery. “We need to keep reinforcing the point that this tax is unfair – particularly as we head towards an election this year,” Mr Chapman said. Mr Hockey noted the MTA’s concerns and that in any event the current Luxury Car Tax threshold should be lifted from its current level of $57,180. Tax of 33 per cent is payable on the amount above the threshold subject to a few minor exemptions. The MTA’s position on the Luxury Car Tax was reinforced later in the day when MTA Member Tom Gilbert from Gilbert Motors in Mount Barker met Mr Hockey at the opening of the Member for Mayo, Jamie Briggs’ new electorate office. Motorsport demands matched by the rewards Motorsport is a difficult niche to break into and a “very tough sport” but it is well worth the effort. That was one of the messages that Steven Richards and Mark Winterbottom of Ford Performance Vehicles delivered to MTA-GTS apprentices and trainees at their graduation. Richards said the skills the graduates had learned would stand them in good stead. He stressed that if they were committed to a career in motorsport, “eventually someone will give you a go”. Winterbottom said the rewards were worthwhile and that “making a career out of your hobby is a pretty cool thing”. Yet he reminded them that staying at the top was extremely difficult and an incredible amount of dedication and commitment was demanded from each member of the team. Starting in Karts at age 15, Richards went on to become the Australian Formula Ford Champion in 1994 and drove Auscar in 1995. In 1996 he also started his V8 Supercar career in Group Training Schemes including the MTA- GTS will gain a 10 per cent plus increase in one area of Government funding in the new financial year. The Minister for Employment, Further Education and Training, Hon. Jack Snelling MP announced the increase when he attended a meeting of Group Training Australia’s South Australian branch at the MTA recently. Mr Snelling told representatives from 12 SA Group Training Schemes that the real threat for our future prosperity would be skills shortages. the V8 Supercar Championship driving a Holden Commodore. He took victory in both the 1998 and 1999 V8 Supercar Bathurst 1000, for both Ford and Holden respectively. The Bathurst 24-hour event was launched in 2002 and convincingly won by his team in a Holden Monaro and the same team was runner up the following year in the 2003 24- hour event. Richards spoke about how large the industry is that supports motorsport. He gave an insight into the many and varied roles, with the days of four or five employees per team now just a memory, with teams of over 50 supporting drivers. “The team is an industry within an industry,” he said. He stressed that passion was vital. Team members would be called on to work throughout the night to get cars ready for the next day’s racing and the measure of success was very clear. “Our bottom line at the end of the day is measured by a stopwatch,” he said. “We need to up-skill our workforce,” he said “Even more critical to our economy than improving infrastructure, are skills and group training organisations such as yours are critical in this.” The Minister announced that the State Government would issue a “green” paper on the future direction on training later in the year and would be seeking detailed feedback from all sectors involved in Voctational Education Training (VET). He described morosport as “very addictive” but recalled from his youth “If you get your ambitions and abilities mixed up, it can be quite painful.” “Frosty” said the Adelaide street circuit was the toughest race of the year - “It absolutely pounds the body” – and that gives it great prestige among the drivers.
