Automotive Repair Division AGM Members of the Automotive Repairer Division gained the first preview of our new Heavy Vehicle Workshop on Tuesday, April 27 when they held their Annual General Meeting at Royal Park. The state-of-art $2.7 million workshop includes underground rainwater storage as well as green electricity generated by a large bank of solar panels feeding power to the workshop and grid. Following the workshop tour members were brought up to speed on association matters through a presentation by Executive Director, John Chapman. It was an excellent presentation highlighting recent lobbying achievements by the Association that have benefited members’ business operations through adjustments to Land Tax or vehicle legislation in regards to window tinting. John’s presentation also brought to attention the strategic planning to provide future benefits in quality trained industry staff, member protection through advocacy, association structure review, membership and marketing initiatives, budgets, organisational capacity and resource management. AGM The newly elected committee is Danny Massacci - Auto Studio, Bruce Cussans - Bruce Cussans Automatics, John Hurley - Kent Town Auto Tune, Peter Stewart - Rowell & Searle Automatics, Brian Weeks - Western Auto Repair, Darryl Siggs - Auto ARD AGM 2010-11. Steering & The Car Nut, Peter Rusack - Rusack Motors, Peter Young - Alltrac 4WD and John Eglezos - SA Chassis & Suspension Repair. At the committee meeting, held directly after the AGM, Brian Weeks returned as elected Chairman of the Division and Board Representative, while John Eglezos retained his position as Vice Chairman. Upper North zone meeting The Upper North zone meeting held in Jamestown once again had a great turn out of members. The MTA members received a presentation of the Association’s current activities over the past three months, including the progress of the Group Training Scheme’s new facility. Michael Sheehan from the MTA’s industrial department gave members a presentation on the Fair Work Act and Award Modernisation and what responsibilities members have in meeting the new regulations both now and going forward as new sections of the Fair Work Act are rolled out. Michael Sheehan also stressed to members that the MTA is there to assist them and that they are just a phone call away. Richard Stock from the Group Training Scheme gave members a behind the scenes description into the new facility at Royal Park and the huge investment made by the Association, not only in the new workshop structure but also in the new equipment available for training. MTA business partner SGIC Business insurances’ Brenton Waller presented members with a question of under insurance and the impacts on businesses if problem issues should arise. The MTA would like to thank all the members who attended the zone meeting and also to those members who stayed behind to look at a short presentation of the MTA’s new business tool ERIS. ERIS is a 24/7 on-line employee relations system to assist members in nearly every facet of their business, with over 5000 pages of information to assist MTA members ERIS is a one stop shop. Regions and Divisions Southern country zone AGM “Sold out” It was truly a great Annual General Meeting for the Southern country zone on May 6 this year. Members enjoyed all the refinements of the Victory Hotel at Sellicks Beach as their chosen venue to hold the AGM. Good dining set the mood for good times allowing members to network and catch up with fellow industry business owners. On the business front, members were informed with presentations by MTA staff Tim Buckley and Paul Eblen. Paul spoke of the Fair Work Act and Award Modernisation changes and Tim previewed the MTA business plan for 2010/11. Derek Reavill from MTA-GTS, Danny Knight from Capricorn Society and Steven Berry of SGIC Business Insurance were also able to mix with members and present the latest information on their business activities. Anthony Norris of Grand Auto Wreckers, Lonsdale was elected Chairman of the zone and Stephan Bielawski of Dynamic Motor Mexhanix, Lonsdale as Vice Chairman. South Coast Auto Repairs owner, Danny Shane was re-elected as Board Representative for the zone. The next meeting for the Southern Country zone will be held Tuesday, October 26 2010. Upper Spencer Gulf zone meeting The Upper Spencer Gulf zone dinner meeting was held at the Spencer Hotel, Whyalla on May 10 2010 and was well attended with members travelling from Port Augusta to attend. MTA staff member Anna Rau gave a presentation on the Fair Work Act highlighting the importance of changes such as the parental, personal, carers, compassionate leave, flexible working arrangements and the importance of employment documentation. Roger Ballantine presented the MTA 2010/2011 business plan outlining the key points of the GTS expansion with the completion of the $2.7m Heavy Vehicle Training Facility. He also outlined the extra courses on offer, the increased apprentice intake, environment auditing programs, member forums, increasing MTA membership and the importance of our business partners. The division also made a decision to continue with the “Alan Melville Apprentice Award” in combination with the local Whyalla Economic Development Award nights. Chairman, Leon Jarvis, in closing thanked MTA staff and SGIC for their contribution and hospitality and also the members for their attendance and participation. Lower South East country zone The Lower South East zone dinner meeting was held at the Commodore on the Park Motel on April 19 2010 with a good representation from member businesses in attendance. Chairman, Peter Roberts gave an overview on the role of the MTA, Board and Executive and advised members to remember to use MTA for problem issues. One area where assistance was requested was the growth in the district of roadside car selling and options to address this. MTA staff member Roger Ballantine gave a presentation on the MTA business plan for 2010/2011 highlighting the key points and Paul Eblen gave an address on the Fair Work Act and how the changes will impact on members. John Matthews from SGIC reported on the risks associated with under-insurance highlighting that approximately 50 per cent of businesses are in this category.
