(xiii) he shall serve such processes as may be prescribed upon persons<br />

residing within the jurisdiction of the Gram <strong>Panchayat</strong>; '* * '*<br />

(xiv) he shall attend the office of the Gram <strong>Panchayat</strong> on such dates as<br />

may be directed by the Pradhan, assist in such manner as may be necessary<br />

and act as messenger as and when required; and<br />

(xv) he shall carry out such other duties as may be entrusted to him from<br />

time to time in accordance with this <strong>Act</strong> or any rule made thereunder.<br />

Every Dafadar shall exercise all the powers conferred on a Chowkidar under subsection<br />

(1) and shall perform such duties as may be imposed upon him by rules<br />

made under this <strong>Act</strong>.<br />

40. Whenever [Dafadar, Chowkidar or Gram <strong>Panchayat</strong> Karmee] arrests any<br />

person under section 39 he shall forthwith take the person so arrested to the<br />

police-station having jurisdiction over the area in which the arrest is made:<br />

Provided that if the arrest is made at night such person shall be so taken, as<br />

soon as convenient, by the following morning.<br />

41. A Gram <strong>Panchayat</strong> shall have power to acquire, hold and dispose of property<br />

and to enter into contract:<br />

Provided that in all cases of acquisition or disposal of immovable property the<br />

Gram <strong>Panchayat</strong> shall obtain the previous approval of the State Government.<br />

42. (1) All property within the local limits of the jurisdiction of Gram <strong>Panchayat</strong> of<br />

the nature hereinafter in this section specified, other than property maintained by<br />

the Central or the State Government or a local authority or any other Gram<br />

<strong>Panchayat</strong>, shall vest in and belong to the Gram <strong>Panchayat</strong>, and shall, with all<br />

other property of whatsoever nature or kind which may become vested in the<br />

Gram <strong>Panchayat</strong>, be under its direction, management and control, that is to<br />

say—<br />
