BATHURST WIRADJURI CONTEMPORARY DREAMTIME STORY Bathurji Wiradyuri Mayiny Girri Giilang (Bathurst Wiradjuri Future People Story) As a beautification project for Kelso High, a number of subject orientated murals are being painted to be hung around the school. One of these murals is based on Aboriginal culture and is based on Past, Present and Future, under the artistic guidance of Ms Gail Sylvester. The mural depicts the following in its storyline: Before dreamtime the land is featureless and shows the night. The song-line contains the stories passed down from generation to generation. The Aboriginal people are astronomers and the emu in the sky is Auntie Gloria looking down and watching over everyone. The Southern Cross can only be seen from the Southern Hemisphere and is in the second panel. The white dots and ribbon are swirling through time. The kookaburras sing and the sun rises. The hills in the mural, represent Mt Panorama and the hills around Bathurst. The song-line links the aboriginal tribal groups together and runs throughout the entire country. It starts to diminish because of Colonisation when aboriginal people had their culture taken from them. The rings represent all the people working together to build a stronger community and the songline is starting to rebuild as more people create their own personal dreaming for the future symbols. The final panel No.5 is the Macquarie River, an important feature of Bathurst and Flat Rock where the flowing green lines represent the organic nature of the community. Students created their own personal totems and these are depicted throughout the Mural. Also included in the mural are the 8-ways symbols (Aboriginal Pedagogy). The flora and fauna are the students’ representation of themselves. On behalf of the students involved special thanks to Aunty Gloria Rogers, Uncle Bill Allen Jnr, Leanna Carr-Smith, Gail Sylvester, Keith Peasley, Selina Ash, Linda and especially anybody we have forgotten. Without your support guidance and help this project would not have been. In 2012, the I Block Support area was renamed the HUB. The HUB is always buzzing with activity and is a central place for students requiring additional support to touch base with the School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs), check their timetables or participate in alternate learning programs. Students utilise the kitchen to develop their daily living skills or cook up yummy dishes as a reward for positive behaviour. The ‘Move to Learn’ program also operates in the HUB area and it is always great to see kids being active and gaining an understanding of their bodies while laughing and having fun! In I3, one of the HUB’s classrooms has its own Sensory room, providing students with space to chill out, calm down or have a quiet chat with staff or a friend. Students can listen to music and ABBA is always very popular in the Sensory room. The HUB is a dynamic and unique space embraced by all students at Kelso High Campus. Mandaang Guwu Thank You
