Engineered by ® Swiss or Hairy Commensal Shrimp—Sandimenes hirsutus It’s difficult to think of anything more unusual: this tiny partner shrimp from the South Pacific was previously completely unknown to us, and even the Internet has very few pictorial references for Sandimenes hirsutus. The specimen pictured here was probably an accidental import to Switzerland, where I found it at SwissAquaristik. In the absence of any alternative, and not entirely seriously, I have permitted myself to name it the Swiss Commensal Shrimp because of its bright red body color with white lines, the colors of the Swiss flag. Formerly known as Periclimenes hirsutus, this little shrimp, barely 0.75 inches (2 cm) long, was given its own genus in 2009 to recognize the unusual tufts of setae on its body and appendages.
