OVERVIEW:
Pygmy
Gobies
in the sea
and the aquarium
How can one provide an overview of a “fish
family” that isn’t one at all? I will summon
up the courage to try. As already mentioned
in the preceding articles, the fishes termed
“pygmy gobies” by aquarists aren’t actually
a discrete systematic unit, but rather a random
assemblage of small, attractive species,
usually less than 2 inches (5 cm) long and
generally suitable for aquarium maintenance.
The problem is, in fact, two-fold. On the
one hand there are so many small gobies
measuring less than 2 inches (5 cm) that
it would take many pages of CORAL to list
them all. In addition, we are really looking
at several fish families: some familiar species,
for example the Blue Eye Dart Goby,
Tryssogobius colini, have not been regarded
as “real” gobies (family Gobiidae) for some
years, and are now assigned to the dartfishes
(Ptereleotridae), which constitute a separate
family.
The list that follows is simply an overview
of the genera mentioned in the preceding
articles, with color-coding to show their status
in the aquarium hobby.
