In classes, which require specific student work-stations, the number of pupils assigned<br />

shall not exceed the number of student work stations, nor shall it exceed the class size maxima,<br />

except upon mutual agreement between the Alliance and the Administration. Classes primarily<br />

affected by this stipulation include shops, laboratories, typing and physical education. Band and<br />

chorus shall be excluded from the class size maxima.<br />

4-1.6. Adjustment of Class Size<br />

Five (5) school days will be allowed for Administration to adjust for class size violations,<br />

which occur after the third Friday following the opening of school.<br />

4-2. Definitions<br />

Regular assigned periods – are those periods in which the teacher is actively involved<br />

with the student(s) in the act of teaching or supervising.<br />

Unassigned periods – are those periods during which a teacher is not assigned a<br />

regularly programmed teaching period.<br />

<strong>Teacher</strong> of Special Subjects – are elementary librarians/media specialists and those<br />

teachers in elementary schools, who teach special subjects, including, but not limited to, art,<br />

music, and physical education.<br />

Non-teaching tasks – are those tasks, which do not require a certified teacher for proper<br />

performance, such as, but not limited to, clerical duties, lunch room supervision, playground<br />

supervision, bus duty, collection of monies, and any other tasks that can be properly performed<br />

by personnel other than members of the bargaining unit.<br />

Homeroom classes – are those in which students assemble in the morning. The time<br />

involved is a short period and is known as Homeroom period.<br />

Secondary School Supervisory Duties – It is understood that the Alliance will meet<br />

with the secondary school principals to determine if supervisory duties are necessary and to<br />

determine which duties are appropriate. All certified secondary staff must be included in<br />

supervisory and other established duties, except where mutually agreed between the building<br />

principal and the Alliance.<br />

4-3. Lunch/Recess Period<br />

4-3.1. All teachers in the <strong>Coventry</strong> School District shall have a duty-free lunch period of<br />

at least 30 minutes. In the event that any school in the School District is on a double or split<br />

session, where there is no lunch period, then the above provisions shall not apply.<br />

4-3.2. <strong>Teacher</strong>s in the elementary schools, in grades 1 through 5, shall in addition to a<br />

duty-free lunch period of 30 minutes, have 30 minutes of duty-free recess time. In no case shall<br />

a recess be less than 15 minutes.<br />
