The School Calendar shall be adopted by the School Committee upon the<br />

recommendation of the Superintendent based on the recommended calendar of the RI<br />

Association of School Superintendents. Such calendar shall be made an appendix to this<br />

Agreement. Prior to any changes in this calendar during the school year, the Alliance shall be<br />

consulted and be given an opportunity to make recommendations or suggestions.<br />

4-7. Other Conditions of Work<br />

4-7.1. Hiring of Substitutes<br />

4-7.1.1 -- A substitute teacher shall be hired to cover classes of regularly assigned<br />

teachers when they are absent provided that substitutes are available.<br />

4-7.1.2. Regular teachers called upon to replace a regular teacher absent from the<br />

classroom, shall be compensated at the rate specified in Appendix B-4.<br />

4-7.1.3. The Administration shall be responsible for obtaining substitutes. <strong>Teacher</strong>s shall<br />

notify their principal or designee no later than one (1) hour prior to the start of school day of<br />

absence except in an emergency.<br />

4-7.2. School Closing<br />

When adverse weather conditions prevail to warrant the closing of school, the<br />

Superintendent or his/her designee shall notify television channels 6, 10, and 12, and radio<br />

station WPRO, at least one (1) hour prior to the start of school. For the purpose of the broadcast,<br />

WPRO will be considered the official announcement station.<br />

4-7.3. Double/Split Sessions<br />

In the event, that any school in <strong>Coventry</strong> goes on double or split sessions, teachers<br />

presently employed will have preference concerning their hours. <strong>Teacher</strong>s presently employed<br />

will be given consideration to substitute or teach both sessions.<br />

4-7.4. Dress Code<br />

Recognizing the professional status of the teachers in the <strong>Coventry</strong> School District, the<br />

following dress guidelines are established for all certified staff.<br />

All teachers shall present a professional appearance. Professional attire does not<br />

include sweatshirts, blue jeans, worn or torn jeans or athletic attire. Collared dress shirts and ties<br />

for men and similarly formal attire for women is the recommended dress code for the District.<br />

The parties recognize that some teaching activities call for more relaxed attire, and that<br />

on special occasions more relaxed attire may be approved. Under this dress code, teachers may<br />

opt to wear a school uniform designated by the Superintendent or building principal.<br />
