DMSi’s Agility Helps Customers Achieve Maximum Efficiency, Profitability
By adding Mobile barcode scanning capabilities to DMSi’s Agility, Boston Cedar
improved warehouse efficiency, time savings and order accuracy. Because of
Mobile’s scanning, Boston Cedar’s orders and inventory are always 99.9 percent
accurate.
Omaha, Neb.—According to their mission
statement, DMSi Software exists to
help their building product distribution
customers achieve maximum efficiency
and profitability. “DMSi has seen nothing
but rapid growth and high customer satisfaction
as a result of our relentless focus
on the specific needs of the forest and
building products industry. This is a great
industry to serve and our focus will not
change in my lifetime,” states Cal
German, DMSi Software President. And,
given the positive results of their customers,
DMSi’s formula for mutual success
is working.
Boston Cedar & Millwork, a DMSi customer
since 1998, attributes much of their
growth and success to DMSi Software’s
technological advancements, customer
service, and best practices. “With DMSi,
we are able to keep costs down and
increase efficiencies to provide our customers
added value along with our quality
products,” explains Joyce Hunt, Boston
Cedar & Millwork controller. “For Boston
Cedar, DMSi’s customer service is key.
Agility software is industry-specific and
supported by knowledgeable staff specializing
in lumber and building material related
issues. Because DMSi knows how
lumber businesses work, we have a high
comfort level with the assurance we are
using the best practices for our industry.”
When Boston Cedar implemented
DMS+ legacy software nearly a decade
ago, they realized many benefits from
DMSi’s built-in, industry specific software
functionality and largest collection of people
dedicated to these industries. These
benefits include the depth, service, and
integration Boston Cedar needed to
improve customer service, streamline
business processes, and enhance asset
performance. Thus, when DMSi developed
a truly new Windows TM solution in
Agility, Boston Cedar chose to transition
to their hosted environment to achieve
optimal benefits. Additionally, they supplemented
the built-in lumber specific functions
of Agility with the added benefits of
Mobile Solutions and BInformed.
By completely eliminating hardware and
software components through Agility’s
hosted environment, Boston Cedar has
been able to focus on core business initiatives
without the need for database
expertise. Through a hosted environment,
Boston Cedar’s data and application software
reside on a remote, secure, expertly
maintained Data Center. “As the costs of
IT staff steadily increase, hosted solutions
help us drive our costs down, provide
complete disaster protection and keep up
with the latest technology. We don’t even
think about it,” explains Hunt. “And, it’s
great for our salesmen who are now able
to access our database on the road …
wherever, whenever.”
Agility’s tag/tally inventory functionality,
coupled with the additional benefits of
Mobile Solutions, played a strong role in
increasing Boston Cedar’s profitability. At
the heart of Agility is a lumber architecture
that allows for a single item to have multiple
branches, multiple yard locations,
multiple lots, multiple units/tags, and multiple
lengths embedded in its core design.
Every window, every logic component,
and every application in the system was
built from the ground-up to employ this
fundamental lumber inventory architecture.
By adding Mobile barcode scanning
capabilities to Agility,
Boston Cedar
improved warehouse
efficiency, time savings,
and order accuracy.
“Through Mobile’s
scanning, our orders
and inventory are
always 99.9 percent
accurate. We completely
eliminated the
problems related to
human error and the
paper shuffle; saving
a whole person in
dispatch,” says Hunt.
Warehouse personnel
simply scan or
key the correct product,
location, and
quantity at the time
they are physically
picking for remanufactured
and custom
orders. Operating in
real time through wireless connectivity to
Agility allows office staff to update sales
orders and generate pick files for the warehouse
to work from. When picking is done,
delivery tickets can be immediately printed
without waiting for the office staff to update
orders. The final result of complete inventory
control is better customer service.
Our family
is growing.
Gold Label studs are now part
of Simpson’s lumber product
offerings. The high-quality
lumber is produced at our newly
acquired mill in Longview, Wash.
With Gold Label studs, you get:
• Accurate sizing to 1/1000 “
• Bioscan grading
• Competitive transportation
• Competitive prices
We also strive to be good environ-
mental stewards. We participate in
the Sustainable Forestry Initiative
and we use every part of the tree
except its shadow. Chips, bark,
sawdust and shavings are sold to
Multi-Generational BENNETT LUMBER Upgrades Mill Facilities
Salesman Larry Britt and Sales Manager Jim Vandegrift of Bennett
Lumber Products Inc., located in Princeton, Idaho, inspect Cedar
pattern quality.
Princeton, Idaho—Bennett Lumber
Products Inc., located in the “suburbs”
here, has made capital improvements in
the last year that continue to enhance
the solid reputation of this multi-generation
company.
Among the improvements, said Sales
Manager Jim Vandegrift, “We’ve upgraded
and updated our sorter and stacker
system in the sawmill and planer.”
This allows Bennett Lumber, with mills
in Clarkston, Wash., and Princeton, to
produce a higher quality product, “especially
when we’re running Douglas Fir for
DURGIN
Lam Stock, as well as our Ponderosa
Pine,” Vandegrift said.
With the change in the mill, the firm’s
stock of Ponderosa Pine sapwood and
heartwood, for example, can be separated
so Shop lumber can be dried properly
to maintain a 12 percent or less moisture
content. “This allows us to take moisture
content down to 8 or 9 percent in the
wood that we’re going to take to 4/4 and
6/4 Shop, while drying commons separately.”
Vandegrift added. “It turns orders
quicker and keeps our quality standards
higher. We’ve also invested money into
our dry kilns and in the computer technology
that lets us monitor and keep the
moisture to a more consistent degree,
which saves a re-dry.”
Sorter improvements were made in the
Princeton mill and improved efficiencies
in the dry kilns have occurred at both
mills. Also, at the Clarkston mill, an addition
to the sorter at the planer now allows
for 10 more pulls, which makes the flow
of material smoother and saves on
down-time at the planer.
Lumber Co., located in Clarkston,
Wash., and Bennett Lumber Products in
Princeton. The firm, with a workforce of
nearly 400, ranks among the top 90 lumber
producers in the nation.
Guy Bennett’s son, Frank, and daughter,
Jan Dimke, operate the two mills.
Frank is the president of the company
while Jan is the secretary-treasurer.
Frank’s son, Brett Bennett, is vice president
of the company and works in the
Princeton mill. Jan’s son, Mitch Dimke, is
the general manager of the Clarkston
operation. Several of Frank’s grandchildren
work for the company representing
the fourth generation within the family to
work for the firm.
“They (the second, third, and fourth generations)
take as much pride in it as Guy
Bennett did when he first started the
operation,” Vandegrift said.
Bennett Lumber’s inventory and sales
list includes Dimensional lumber, boards
and Shop in 4/4, 6/4 and 8/4 Douglas Fir
& Larch, White Fir, Engelmann Spruce,
Lodgepole Pine, Idaho White Pine,
Inland Red Cedar and Ponderosa Pine.
The Clarkston mill’s output is approximately
45 percent Ponderosa Pine, 25
percent each Fir & Larch and White Fir
and 5 percent ESLP. The Princeton plant
produces 35 percent each of Fir & Larch
and White Fir, and 15 percent each of
Ponderosa Pine and Inland Red Cedar.
Bennett Lumber, in 2006, produced 180
million board feet of lumber.
“We’ll run between 155 and 160 million
board feet in 2007,” Vandegrift said.
Bennett Lumber’s goal as a business, of
course is to make a profit, but the company
also strives to maintain employment
for all its employees. Shifts have
been cut 20 percent from 10 hours a day
to 8 hours a day to prevent layoffs during
current sluggish market conditions.
“We produce a large volume of Cedar
and this year we’ll probably hit 21 to 22
million feet of Cedar, mostly 7/8 boards
but also 5/4X6 radius edge decking,”
said Vandegrift. Strategically placing
specie mixes of White Fir and Fir and
Larch between Ponderosa and Cedar
runs keep production volumes up while
operating time is reduced.
Bennett Lumber exclusively markets to
wholesale and wholesale distributors.
“Bennett Lumber Products Inc. has long
been known for producing a high quality
product,” Vandegrift said. “We’ll never be
the cheap guy on the totem pole. We
emphasize timely shipments and work
as hard as we can to get tallies and product
that the customer demands.”
Bennett Lumber ships by truck and by
rail. “We have a quick turnaround so
you’re not waiting on it,” Vandegrift said.
“We also ship a lot of material export.”
Five percent of the company’s sales are
to overseas customers. Bennett’s products
are shipped to Mexico, China,
Germany and other nations. “All our
material is KDHT stamped which is
needed for all European Union requirements,”
Vandegrift added. “As in the
past, despite market conditions, our goal
is to offer our customer the best product
possible at all times.”
DUCKBACK PRODUCTS’ Superdeck A Superior Prefinish
Woodperfect in mahogany adds classic detail to this fiber cement siding.
The fiber cement siding on this mountain home stands out with a
coat of Woodperfect in redwood.
Solid Color Professional Finish in Navajo White adds a fresh
touch to fiber cement siding.
Chico, Calif.—Duckback Products, the
makers of Superdeck wood stains, has
long been a leader in product innovation.
As the coatings market demands
have changed, so has the product line
up for Duckback. Several innovative
new coatings are on the market now to
meet the needs of prefinishers. These
coatings are manufactured by
Duckback, under the brands
Woodperfect ® and Solid Color
Professional Finish. Each coating offers
its own unique formula backed by the
industry’s best warranties; 12 years for
Woodperfect and 25 years for Solid
Color Professional Finish. Duckback’s
top notch in-house research and development
laboratory has developed these
durable and protective coatings that
offer the beauty and longevity that
today’s customers demand. Plus the
customer service and factory support of
Duckback are unsurpassed.
When Tim Armitage of Rocky Mountain
Prestain switched to Solid Color
Professional Finish, he said, “Using
Duckback Products is like buying an
insurance policy for each job! I don’t
need to worry about claims due to the
hard finish; eliminating marring, scratching
and blocking. With its outstanding
hide, yield and quick dry time, I can be
more productive than with any solid
color acrylic that I have used in the past
17 years.”
Why are professionals so excited about
Duckback Products? The company says
it’s because Duckback has given them
the product and service that they need.
Solid Color Professional Finish offers
hundreds of color choices. Custom color
matching at the Duckback laboratory
uses the most sophisticated technology
to offer exact color matches for customers.
Solid Color Professional Finish
uses a 100 percent acrylic latex formula
with a high solids content of 50 percent.
The high solids content and self crosslinking
resin anchors the product and
gives excellent hide and long-term pigment
adhesion.
The Solid Color Professional Finish formula
contains pure titanium dioxide and
iron oxide pigments, and uses no extender
pigments. This product reaches a 25
percent higher pigment volume than
most factory finishes. This excellent pigment
to binder ratio provides outstanding
color retention. Each Solid Color
Professional Finish color is achieved
from a factory ground pigment base
which gives more consistent color from
batch to batch, better hiding and superior
chalk resistance. The addition of polyethylene
wax provides anti-blocking
properties as well as additional mar and
scuff resistance. The finish is mildew
resistant as well. That’s a lot of benefits
in just one product! Solid Color
Professional Finish may be used on
fiber cement siding, composite siding
and trim and wood.
Woodperfect was one of the first in the
industry to offer a semi-transparent
coating for fiber cement siding. With its
exclusive technology and beautiful natural
wood look, Woodperfect became an
instant success. Many of the industry’s
larger players have tried to match the
look and performance of Woodperfect,
but no one can beat the durability. The
100 percent acrylic latex formula contains
finely ground transparent oxide
pigments for rich, long-lasting color
retention. All colors are factory batched,
giving prefinishers consistency from the
start. The coating resists peeling, fading,
marring and scuffing, even after being
shipped. When factory boards are prefinished,
they arrive at the job site fully
coated and ready to install.
According to a company spokesperson,
in addition to these great coatings,
Duckback continues to produce the outstanding
Superdeck line for exterior
wood, including Transparent Stain &
Sealer, and Log Home Oil Finish, available
in 250 voc and 350 voc; Semi-
Transparent Stain, in 250 voc; Pressure
Treated Wood Stain & Sealer, also 250
voc; and Waterproofing Stain & Sealer,
in waterborne 250 voc. Superdeck
stains have long been a contractor and
prefinish favorite, due to the highly
durable one coat system with beautiful
long-lasting colors, UV protection,
mildewcide and superior penetration
and water resistance. Superdeck makes
a stain for all its customers’ wood needs.
Duckback offers a certified prefinish
program and can help anyone get started
with these professional grade coatings.
They also offers assistance with
equipment set up, technical assistance
and more.
Lumber Manufacturer Carves Name In Competitive Industry
By Bridget McCrea
John Branstetter, Russ, Emily and Duane Vaagen are among key personnel
at Vaagen Brothers Lumber Inc., located in Colville, Wash.
Colville, Wash.—Whether it’s the
chance to introduce a new product,
open a new facility or explore a new
geographic market area, the team at
Vaagen Brothers Lumber, which is located
here, is always on the lookout for
new opportunities.
That strategy has been in place since
the company was founded by brothers
Bert and Bud Vaagen in 1952. What
One Success Story After Another...
started out as a small mill that made railroad
ties has since evolved into a 2-
thanks to its ability to fulfill customers’
needs by utilizing small logs.
Specializing in 2X4, 2X6 and 2X8, 8 to
lengths) in Usk, Wash. Combined annual
production volume for both locations
ranges from 18 to 22 million board feet
per month, according to John
Branstetter, sales manager.
The company manufactures a high volume
of machine stress-rated lumber,
and sells its products mainly to wholesale
distributors and truss manufacturers,
most of which are based in the
Vaagen Bros.’ portable mill enables the company to increase its productivity.
Western U.S. “Spokane is our main market,”
said Branstetter, “followed by Salt
Lake City, Phoenix, Denver and all of
California.”
Vaagen Bros. purchases its raw materials
from landowners located within a
200-mile radius of its Washington plants,
which are situated about 50 miles south
of the Canadian border. Branstetter said
the firm’s reputation for small-log utilization
has put it ahead of the pack in its
industry.
“Not many of our competitors focus on
that segment,” he said, adding that the
small log goes a long way in enhancing
timber stands, improving forest health
and reducing fire danger by thinning.
“We’re able to do that in an economical
way.”
In light of current market conditions,
Branstetter said Vaagen Bros. is challenged
when it comes to finding logs,
particularly the affordable kind. “Logs
are very expensive right now,” said
Branstetter.
To work through the issues, Branstetter
said the firm works to expand its market
and scout around for alternative and/or
specialty products that help the manufacturer
keep costs at a minimum.
The company also strives to stay on
the leading edge of manufacturing, and
recently installed a new, Coastal 24
knife high-speed planer. A big investment
for the firm, the planer was “well
worth it” according to Branstetter, who
said it has created efficiencies within the
plant that were previously unattainable.
“This is the second summer that we’re
using it, and we’re very pleased with its
capabilities,” said Branstetter. “What
used to take 10 shifts to complete, now
only takes four.”
After going through the planer and
Metriguard stress machine, the lumber
grading is handled automatically
through the use of cameras and computers.
“The lumber is evaluated and tested
every step of the way,” said Branstetter.
“That way, we always know exactly how
dry and strong it is. Once that information
is fed into the grading apparatus,
the machine will view it and see how that
stacks up for that particular grade. It is
very dependable and accurate.”
Looking ahead, Vaagen Bros. has purchased
a portable HewSaw mill that previously
operated in New Zealand. The
team is in the process of selecting its
first location. “We’ve revamped it to fit
the U.S.-type electrical supply,” said
Branstetter. “We plan to get that up and
running this year.”
Expansion may also be in the cards for
Vaagen Bros. which will continue to
focus on meeting customer needs and
responding to their demands while at the
same time dealing with challenges such
as the lack of affordable logs. “We’ll continue
to keep our eyes open for opportunities,
whether it’s a new product or facility,”
says Branstetter. “It’s a strategy
that’s worked well for us for 55 years,
and we expect it to keep working for us
well into the future.”
products backed by an understanding
of the features and benefits of the product,
how to specify the right product for
an application, how to properly install,
finish and provide proper care and
maintenance are key for a successful
experience by the end user.
On Site Training
The original training program began
with the hiring of field representatives
whose mandate is to travel extensively
throughout the U.S. to provide on-site
training to our members’ distribution
staff, their dealer and contractor network.
These 2-3 hour sessions provide
a good introduction to the Western Red
Cedar species, the products available
from our members, and how to install,
finish and care for them.
WRCLA Cedar School
Recognizing the need to have a network
of Cedar “champions” in the market,
WRCLA conducts a 5-day Cedar
School in Vancouver. The in-depth training
in forestry practices, wood properties,
manufacturing process, product
grading, installation and finishing
ensures that students are given the
most comprehensive experience available
in the industry. Graduates are
empowered by their experience and
many return to take on leadership roles
in their company’s Cedar sales programs.
Cedar School Comes To The Market
Cedar School is the ultimate training
experience. However, it is time consuming
and requires a sizeable financial
investment for employees to attend. In
response to numerous requests from
the trade to conduct an “in-market” version
of Cedar School, WRCLA has
undertaken a series of intensive training
sessions in various regions of the U.S.
Featuring instructors from Cedar
School, and following much of its curriculum,
these one-day sessions allow
companies to train more people at a significantly
lower cost and with less time
off the job. For more information about
these “Regional Product Knowledge
Seminars,” contact info@wrcla.org.
Online Training Reaches The World
It’s hard to beat the effectiveness of
face-to-face training sessions.
However, the reality is that the limitations
of budgets and staffing levels put a
real restriction on the reach of WRCLA’s
traditional training programs.
Recognizing the growing importance of
the Internet and the tremendous reach
of its various Web sites (more than
300,000 visitors in May), WRCLA has
developed an online version of its
Cedar School. Comprised of seven
modules covering all aspects of the regular
curriculum, the online school features
a very innovative, narrated presentation
with excellent visuals. Each
module has an examination, and following
completion of all seven modules,
students submit their exams to WRCLA
staff for grading. Students achieving the
required 70 percent passing grade
receive a certificate of achievement
from WRCLA. In addition to the outstanding
quality of this training
package, it has the potential to
be available to people all over
the world. In addition to
English, versions are available
in French, Japanese and
Mandarin. Of further interest to
employers and students — it is
free and it can be studied in
spare time. Check it out at
AIA Professional
Development Credits For
The Architect Audience
Training the architect community
about the properties and
uses of Western Red Cedar has long
been a priority of WRCLA. WRCLA was
greatly honored when the prestigious
American Institute of Architects (AIA)
reviewed the online Cedar School and
deemed it to be worthy of seven credit
hours of professional development
training. Furthermore, a shorter
PowerPoint version of the WRCLA Field
Representatives’ “live” training sessions
has been awarded two credit hours of
AIA professional development credits.
Field reps will deliver these sessions
upon request — when a sufficient number
of participants are available.
Installer Training Program
There have been too many instances
of homeowners having less than satisfactory
experiences with the performance
of the product in their homes. All
too often, these performance issues are
directly linked to improper installation
and finishing practices by the people
who install the product. WRCLA’s latest
training initiative is to reach out to the
installer community and offer a comprehensive
training package based on elements
of the online Cedar School and
the “How To Install” handbook.
Participants will be required to pass an
Five Good Reasons to Upgrade Business So
By Len Williams, President & CEO, Progressive Solutions Inc.
I talk to a lot of company
presidents, CFOs and CIOs
in our industry. For the
most part, you all want
the same things. Efficient,
profitable operations. A
productive workforce. A
competitive edge.
It’s fantastic that you’re making strategic investments
in capital equipment to achieve efficiency. But are you
continually investing in the future of your Information
Technology (IT) too?
Ongoing IT Investment: Critical for
Growth & Profitability
Statistics indicate that your industry is sadly lagging
other manufacturing and distribution industries
in annual IT investment. Why? Because software
companies have done a poor job of demonstrating the
strategic value and return on IT investments.
So, instead of viewing IT as a valuable tool to gain
competitive advantage, improve profitability and
asset utilization, and enable strategic initiatives, IT is
seen as an unfortunate necessity.
If you’re a bigger company, you’ve created an inhouse
system or installed a couple of disparate
software packages that are 10 or 15 years old now to
help you processes transactions. Your “system” is a
patchwork, it doesn’t always do what you need it to,
it’s expensive and cumbersome to keep running, and
you’re down to only a couple of people who know
how to help you get information out of it.
If you’re smaller, you may be getting by with a basic
accounting package, and managing your orders and
inventory using Excel spreadsheets dotted with
notes and sticky tabs. Your ability to analyze your
business is limited because the data is decentralized
and disconnected.
I’ve seen it all and I’m here to tell you there’s a better
way. You can do more with less, with the help of a
good, modern Information Technology system.
Good Information = Good Decisions
Reliable and easily accessible information is essential
to better decisions, the thousands made day-to-day by
your employees, as well as the strategic decisions you
make so that your company will grow and prosper.
Conversely, inadequate information is at the root
of each of the Five Good Reasons to Upgrade Your
Software. Here they are:
1. Your employees don’t have the tools they need to
be productive. Your software and processes
frustrate them, and they can never find what
they’re looking for. They don’t seem to talk to each
other except to grumble, and rarely come up with
good ideas any more.
2. Your customers expect more. Even though their
requests are quite reasonable, you have to say,
“Our system can’t do that.”
3. You’re losing customers to the competition. And
you’re not able to attract new customers. They tell
you they get better, faster service elsewhere.
4. You’re simply not as efficient or profitable as you
could be. It’s the small inefficiencies, the mistakes
made because of poor internal communication,
pricing irregularities, products with slow turnover,
the time wasted finding documents and waiting
for reports. But it’s also the big opportunities you
miss because you can’t easily mine and analyze
your data. All these eat away at your profits.
5. Your decade-old platform doesn’t help anymore.
Your software is a reflection of your quality
of service and your commitment to continuous
improvement. Sooner or later, you’ll realize that
you just can’t get where you want to go on a
software platform that’s 15 or 20 years old … no
matter how well it has served you up until now.
Platform Upgrades Make Dollars & Sense
At Progressive Solutions, we’ve been providing
software solutions since 1989. We are proud that
Lumber Track has earned the reputation for being the
leading industry-specific software for wood products
manufacturers, and that bisTrack is now the fastest
growing in the LBM industry.
Technology has changed a lot in the last 20 years.
And so should your IT platform. Internet, email, cell
phones are all technologies that transformed the way
we communicate. But to use these new technologies
to achieve real economic benefit – productivity
improvement, increased asset utilization, margin
control and profit maximization – you need a modern
IT platform.
Progressive Solutions Adopts
Microsoft Standards
Progressive Solutions’ philosophy has always been
to continually invest in product development so our
“To achieve real economic
benefit — productivity
improvement, increased asset
utilization, margin control and
profit maximization — you
need a modern IT platform.”
customers can take advantage of new technologies.
For us, the only logical product strategy was to adopt
a Microsoft platform to help us cost-effectively keep
pace with the plethora of technology development
worldwide. Through Microsoft’s standardized user
interface, data access and connectivity interfaces,
we’re able to tap into new technology and practices
with rapid development cycles.
As a company, we’re a Microsoft Gold Certified
Partner, the highest level of recognition given to ISVs.
Our product development groups in the US, UK and
Canada are all Microsoft certified.
So why should you care?
Lumber Track V8 boosts productivity and data accessibility for manufacturers
The new Lumber Track V8 is very different than
its precursors. Increased access to data, familiar
Microsoft user interface with powerful new business
intelligence tools, as well as added supply chain
management features make it worth your while to
look at Lumber Track again.
Lumber Track has been modernized to take
advantage of new technologies – namely Microsoft
Windows UI and SQL Server.
Modern look and faster performance
Lumber Track’s user interface is now consistent with
the appearance and functionality of MS Office and
Outlook, so your users are immediately productive in
the familiar environment and require less training.
Intelligent tools such as Dashboards and Instant
Messaging help your employees be more responsive
and stay on top of their important tasks, as critical
event messages and their Key Performance Indicators
(KPIs) are pushed to their desktops in real-time.
Employees will know the software was designed to
help them do their jobs better and faster.
Forecasting, analysis & interchange enabled
With MS SQL Server, you can take advantage of
non-cryptic file names, our data warehousing and
Microsoft’s powerful reporting tools. Instead of
waiting for the IT department to create a report, users
can easily analyze data themselves, giving them more
opportunity to add value in their role.
Improved data accessibility allows you to manage
your business and your supply chain in five key ways:
1. Align sales commitments with production
forecasting and planning, by integrating
production, procurement, inventory and sales data
so that production planning is demand-based and
sales know what’s available-to-promise.
2. Analyze your operations by exporting to Crystal
Reports, or to Excel with a simple right-click.
3. Use Quick Answer Lists to quickly retrieve data.
4. Use a Customer Service web portal powered by
Web Track to expand your sales desk and offer 24/7
order placement and status checks.
5. Engage in EDI with suppliers and customers.

Investment in Modern Software Returns
Productivity & Profitability
Software built in a modern Microsoft environment
gives you answers to the Five Good Reasons to Switch
Software cited earlier:
1. Productive and efficient employees make use of
Dashboards and personalized software, proactive
System Messages, document management
and change tracking, Smart Views and Quick
Answer Lists to eliminate mundane tasks and
be more responsive with value-added tasks.
2. Superior customer service is achieved using
tools incorporating Related Documents, realtime
transaction processing, JIT workflow, and
communication standards such as XML for
electronic data interchange.
3. Retaining and attracting good customers is easier
using tools such as Instant Messaging, CRM and
Customer Service web portals to further enhance
customer service.
4. Profit-boosting opportunities emerge when
analyzing your MS SQL Server data with OLAP
Cubes, Data Warehouses and Datamining.
5. Analytics and BI (Business Intelligence) are the
foundation for strategic progress.
If you don’t have, or don’t understand, the
functionality above, your platform isn’t helping you
anymore. The good news is that we do, and it’s really
not that scary.
We have successfully converted about 6000 users to
run our Lumber Track V8 and bisTrack platforms that
make use of these technologies. They invested in IT from
Progressive Solutions because it made dollars and sense
for them.
We invite you to contact us to discuss what’s
involved in modernizing your particular system. We’ll
work with you to achieve significant return on your
investment through productivity, asset utilization and
profit maximizing strategies revealed through the
effective use of Information Technology.
Experience the Difference
Lumber Track’s integrated, real-time inventory
control, sales order management and logistics
functionality has earned it top standing in the
market along with the respect of some of the top
names in the industry.
Great software solutions come from listening to
what customers say they’re trying to accomplish,
and it starts right from the beginning of the
implementation process. Our implementers each
LBM Software that Packs a Productivity Punch
bisTrack software has been enthusiastically embraced by building materials suppliers, amassing over
5000 users in the UK and North America who seek modern Microsoft technology to maximize human
potential and return on assets in their company. Our philosophy is to provide intelligent software tools
designed help operate and analyze businesses better. Our ability to rapidly develop new features and
functionality is a big part of why our customers buy bisTrack.
The new features in bisTrack 2 pack a powerful punch to boost productivity of your employees.
Performance-Boosting Tools
These three tools personalize bisTrack software for each user’s needs to
make it easier for them to do their jobs. Each person in the organization is
going to say, “This software looks like it was designed for me!”
Personal Assistant – This unique application of Business Intelligence,
Dashboard and Instant Messaging tools works in concert to pro-actively
push data, events, key performance metrics and warnings to the
“My software can’t do that!”
desktop(s) of those who need to know.
It’s like having a personal assistant assigned to everyone in your company, to remind them of important
tasks, let them know of events relating to their orders, and point out possible errors. It’s a huge time-saver
and helps avoid possible customer service issues.
Profile Designer – This companion tool helps create role-based profiles for each user or user group so
bisTrack screens display only the tasks and quick links relevant to them. Instead of looking at a cluttered
computer screen, all the noise that doesn’t apply to them is eliminated; they see only what they need to
get their job done quickly and efficiently.
Smart Views – With a simple right-click, a user can save the way data is defined, sorted, and
displayed. Favorite reports or ways to view data look-ups can be retrieved in an instant, saving time
and ensuring consistency.
Modern Sales Modules
NEW
These three modules make your sales and customer service personnel more responsive to the varied
products & services in your growing business, even when on the road.
Product Configurator – This enhanced module guides users intelligently through the creation of custom
doors, windows, and other complex products, listing required components and their available options.
Costing and pricing options are available by line or by finished product.
Installed Sales – This module allows users to create pricing agreements, typically for a fixed price, that
combine materials and installation services. Invoicing is not tied to the shipping of goods, nor to the
value of the products shipped. Instead, billing is done at predetermined periods or events, and multiple
billings are possible for each job providing ultimate flexibility for your Installed Sales agreements.
Mobile Sales Reps – On a Windows Mobile Smartphone, your sales reps can look up customer
information including sales history, get stock and price information, get product sales histories, and
enter site visit reports. Your sales reps will be responsive even while on the road.
Committed to the industry and your profitability
In support of our ongoing commitment to the North American building materials industry, we’ve also
added a ton of features including credit card support, and interfaces to 20-20 Kitchen, Andersen and
Marvin Windows, Seljax, Luxwood and other design/estimating systems.
But bisTrack is more than a feature-rich system designed specifically for your needs. Our worldclass
professional services help you optimize your use of the valuable data you collect. Our On Track
implementation process combined with ongoing programs Productivity Track and Quantum Profits
ensure you maximize the potential of your operations.
Come and see why over 5000 competitive software users have switched to bisTrack.
Top Quality Softwood Lumber Right
At Home In KUHNS BROS. Family
Lewisburg, Pa.—The rich tradition
of Kuhns Brothers Lumber Company,
centrally located in the Appalachian
Forest,
spans more
than four
decades
and three
generations.
The enterprise
has
humble
roots; it
b e g a n
when Carl
R.Kuhns,
“Pop”, started
in business
with a
portable
sawmill
f r o m
Montgomery
Ward in
1946. “Pop”
passed on
his “healthy
respect” for
God’s land
and a strong
knowledge
of the forest
products
industry to
twin sons
Leonard and
L a r r y
Kuhns, who
established
Kuhns Bros.
Lumber Co.
in 1962.
Leonard’s
son and current
company
president,
Tim
Kuhns,
oversees
the firm’s
continued
success.
The current
sales staff
and production
team is
committed
to excell
e n c e ,
always
focusing on
the customer
as the most important asset.
At Kuhns Bros. Lumber Co. sound
forestry management has always
been a vital part of the operation. Strict
quality standards are applied to
forestry operations in accordance with
the principles established by the
Sustainable Forestry Initiative of
Pennsylvania. Kuhns Brothers
Lumber Co. is committed to keeping
the environment healthy for future
generations.
Kuhns Bros. Lumber Co. encompasses
more than 135 acres and has 58
employees. Softwoods, Eastern
Hemlock and Eastern White Pine, are
offered green or kiln-dried, while the
main hardwood species sawn by
Kuhns Bros. in order of volume are red
oak, white oak, soft maple, poplar and
white ash. These top five species are
offered green and kiln-dried. Cherry
and hard maple lumber are offered
green.
Currently, Kuhns’ Eastern White Pine
log timbers are sawn in lengths of 8-
inch to 26-inch with 37 percent of production
sold to the firm’s sister company,
Kuhns Bros. Log Homes, as well
as framing for the log home industry.
Eastern Hemlock log timbers are primarily
sawn for barn frames, as well
as sister company Country Log
Cabins. At Kuhns Bros., all employees
strive to stand above the rest. To better
serve the customer, the firm also produces
custom
sawn Softwood
orders to meet
clients’ needs.
Presently
Kuhns Bros.
Lumber Co. produces
more than
8 million feet of
Softwood lumber
and 9 million
board feet of top
quality hardwood
lumber per year,
while operating
Quality Softwood lumber ready to be shipped from Kuhns Bros.
Lumber Co.
Twin brothers, Leonard and Larry Kuhns, established family-run
Kuhns Bros. Lumber Co., in 1962.
Softwood cants roll off of the production line to be sold green or kilndried.
capacity of
750,000 board
feet. The company
is drying
more lumber
today than it has
at any time in the
past, and plans
are to further
expand the kilndrying
operation.
Recent modernizations
at the
hardwood mill
feature a new
HMC carriage
and INOVEC log
scanner. The
company also
enjoys a thriving
mulch operation
which expects to
produce over
3,000 trailer
loads in 2006
and has recently
expanded its
forest by-product
offerings to
include firewood
in truck load
quantities and
prepackaged
palletized for
retail sales. All
of our firewood
species
are kiln dried
Pennsylvania
hardwoods.
Kuhns Bros.
Lumber Co.
serves both the domestic and international
markets. In the past few years,
Kuhns Bros. has found new markets in
Ireland, Germany, Japan, Korea, Spain,
France, Mexico, Portugal, the United
Kingdom, China, Kuwait and Saudi
Arabia.
Even after years of continued growth
and success, Kuhns Bros. Lumber Co.
remains committed to the principles and
standards passed along by “Pop” many
years ago. Perhaps the company’s mission
statement best reflects the proud
tradition of Kuhns Bros. Lumber Co.:
“Situated among the world’s finest
Appalachian hardwoods and Softwood,
and rooted in a three generation commitment
to integrity, qualtiy and stewardship;
Kuhns Bros. Lumber Co. strives to
consistently provide our customers the
very best in forest products.”
WOOD PRIMING PRODUCTS
LLC Moves To Oakwood, Ga.
O a k w o o d , G a . —Wood Priming
Products, LLC, which was founded by
Chris Robertson and Eddie Hipps in
April of 2004, expanded and moved
to a new location here recently.
“ W e
added a
new oven
drying system,
which
runs by
conveyor,
to speed
up the
priming
process,”
Robertson
said. “We
now have
a spraying
and flood
coater
system.
B o t h
machines
operate at
the same
time, which
cuts down
on processing
our customer’s
orders.”
The history
of Wood
Priming
Products
can be
traced
back to a
discussion
between
Robertson,
his wife,
Cindy, and
Hipps. One
day, the
three were
chatting
about how
long it
takes to
have lumber
products
primed
through a
local company,
and
later decided
to open
their own
company.
D a v e
Coleman,
national sales manager for PPG
Machine Applied Coatings, headquartered
in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Jim
Currie, founder of CIII Industries,
based in Sacramento, Calif., assisted
with the paint primer and building the
machines which are currently used in
their business today.
Robertson said he never thought
Wood Priming Products, whose customer
base is primarily local, would
have their finished products exported
all over the world.
“For example, our prefinished
cement siding boards go all over the
United States and Canada, while our
priming is currently being used in the
Caribbean Islands,” he said.
Wood Priming Products provides
their customers with factory painting
for a variety of exterior cornice and
siding materials to include lumber,
plywood, MDO panels, finger joint
and solid moldings and fiber cement
boards. Their operation offers factorypainting
services in truckload or unit
quantities with a seven-day turnaround.
However, products are usually
returned to their customers within
three to four days. Materials can be
primed with one coat of protective
paint, in addition to a second finish
coating, in one of 80 different latex
colors or materials can have a semitransparent
stain applied. They use
100 percent acrylic latex paints made
by PPG
Chris Robertson is the president of Wood Priming Products LLC, located
in Oakwood, Ga. Robertson co-founded the company with Eddie
Hipps in April 2004.
Robertson shows off Wood Priming’s new oven drying system. The firm
recently moved into an expanded location in Oakwood.
When the
material is
primed, it is
placed into a
dryer, which
can heat up
to 150
degrees.
After drying,
the material
is stacked
with poly
sheeting
between the
boards to
help protect
the products
f r o m
scratches
and moisture.
Then
the entire
unit is covered
with a
protective
to protect
the material
during the
transportat
i o n
process.
W o o d
Priming
Products
recently purchased
approximately
three
acres in
Oakwood,
Ga., to build their new facility. The
warehouse has large drive-in doors to
allow trucks to be driven into the
warehouse for loading and unloading
purposes.
“We try to do everything we can
under cover so nothing is slowed
down due to the weather,” Robertson
said. “Drivers are able to drive in
untarp and retarp. None of our products
are allowed to sit outside.”
At Wood Priming Products, customer
service is their number one priority.
Robertson is able to unload and
load trucks, operate the paint
machine if needed and help with
stacking the material for customer
pickups. He is also available if a driver
needs to deliver a load to them
before or after regular operating
hours. “Our days begin at 6 a.m. and
usually last about 12 hours a day, six
days a week,” he said.
Wood Priming Products LLC is a
member of the North American
Wholesale Lumber Assoc. (NAWLA).
POSTSAVER ® USA Introduces SmartPost
To Protect Wood Structures
K r e s g e v i l l e , P a . —Postsaver®
USA continues to grow
its marketshare by offering a
safe and simple solution to inground
post decay. The company
specializes in providing a
patented barrier wrap protection
technology to manufacturers
and suppliers looking to
add value to the ground contact
products they sell. The
product works, and it’s no surprise
that its technical viability
is catching on fast.
Earlier this year, the
Evaluation Services of the International
Code Council (ICC-ES) issued an
Evaluation Service Report (ESR-1834)
to Postsaver USA. The ESR found that
Postsaver protected wooden members
are building code compliant where
ground contact applications and termite
resistant wood is required. In January,
the American Wood Preservers’
Association (now called the American
Wood Protection Association, or
AWPA) will have a Barrier Preservative
System Standard in its 2007 Book of
Standards. The new standard, P20-07,
was proposed and developed by representatives
of Postsaver USA to extend
the AWPA’s understanding, expertise
and knowledge base of this new
method of wood protection.
Postsaver USA’s boots and sleeves
are not sold separately, but are applied
to wood using a specialized production
machine. The material dealers purchase
arrives pre-applied to posts and
poles and is ready for quick shipment
and easy installation.
Here’s how Postsaver USA products
work: The vulnerable in-ground area of
a post is shrink-wrapped with a heavyduty
UV stabilized polyethylene boot
that has been pre-coated on the inside
with bitumen (similar to asphalt). The
application process melts the sticky
bitumen under-layer to the wood while
a tough polyethylene outer-layer
shrinks tightly to encase the melted
bitumen under-layer. The net result is
an absolute barrier that functions similar
to a geomembrane.
Recently, Postsaver USA entered the
structural post and pole market with the
introduction of their SmartPost® product
line. SmartPosts offer builders and
suppliers a safe and superior product
for structural applications such as deck
support posts and columns used in
post-frame construction. The value
proposition is simple because it solves
most of the
installation,
safety, performance
and
fastener corrosion
concerns
associated
with
chemically
treated lumber.
For the
installer,
SmartPosts
will save significant
time
and money
because most
of the peripheral
fasteners
and compon
e n t s
required for
typical compliant
installs
are eliminated.
The Smart-
Post is comprised
of 3 components: — lumber,
notches and Postsaver USA’s boot.
Solid sawn and glulam posts and poles
are carefully selected for their intended
use. Pre-notching the wood in a predetermined
location where stresses are
lowest (conforming to a strategic patent
pending shape similar to an hour glass)
provides superior uplift restraint characteristics.
The entire ground-contact
portion of the post is protected with the
Postsaver USA’s double barrier system.
For those thinking green, the barrier
will help reduce the migration of preservative
chemicals from leaving the wood
and entering the soil. This benefit is not
only environmentally friendly, but it
compliments treated posts and poles
because the barrier helps keep the
wood’s preservative chemicals more
available at the ground line area where
decay usually occurs.
Postsaver USA products can be easily
applied to durable species like Cedar,
Redwood or Cypress and will perform
as well as non-durable wood treated
with preservatives for ground contact
use.
For more information about Postsaver
USA, visit their new comprehensive
Web site at www.postsaverusa.com or
call 610-681-6451.
Postsaver USA, headquartered in Kresgeville, Pa., recently introduced SmartPost, which
offers builders and suppliers a safe product for structural applications.
SOUTHERN PNEUMATICS
Opens New Division
K n o x v i l l e , T e n n . —The history of
Southern Pneumatics began in 1958, leading
to a solid reputation of design, fabrication
and installation of dust collection systems
on a national
scale.
As indicated by Joe
Hill and Charles
Owens, design engineers,
industrial
dust is Southern
Pneumatics specialty,
as is turnkey and full
service.
“We are capable of
providing virtually all
brands and models of
units, including our
custom built Hillco
brand of cyclones and
baghouses,” said Hill.
“We also specialize
in customizing our
installation schedules
to meet our
customers’ needs,”
Owens added.
For more than
20 years Southern
Pneumatics has
remanufactured and
refurbished preowned
equipment,
and has in the last six
months, significantly
expanded this area
with acres of baghouses,
cyclones, blowers,
fans, etc.
This pre-owned line
of equipment is complete
with all sizes,
and includes rebuilt as
needed to the level of
a finished product,
primer and paint.
Savings on pre-owned
often reaches 50 to 75
percent of a new unit.
Additionally Southern
Pneumatics is known
throughout the industry
for emergency
response. Recently
they responded to a
dust explosion with a
repair team in 4 hours,
and were able to
reduce down time to
two-and-a-half days.
S o u t h e r n
Pneumatics is a custom
fabricator with a
large selection of pipe
fittings and accessories
on hand, and
stocks off the shelf
items such as rings,
cutoffs, cleanouts,
flex hoses, etc. If the
dust industry needs it,
Southern Pneumatics
can obtain and supply
that item.
Most recently
Southern Pneumatics
has opened a new
division located at
549 West Scott
Avenue, across the
street from our current
location, allowing
excellent interaction
between
the two divisions.
Southern Pneumatics
added strike capability to be doubly effective
and efficient for clients and customers,
as well as offering cost savings by packaging
services.
Cable has more than 15 years experience,
and his crew has a total of 150 years
experience in everything from crane service
to hand tools. The new division offers
plant relocation, certified welders, mechanical
systems, sheet metal fabrication and
installation, steel erections and heavy rigging,
concrete forming and finishing, new
electrical installation, site excavation,
process piping, electrical service and general
contracting from remodel to new construction.
Southern Pneumatics’ management indicated
they have always been in the business
of system maintenance and p.m.
service. They are a factory direct supplier
This Southern Pneumatics baghouse was installed at
a custom cabinet shop in White, Ga.
Southern Pneumatics, located in Knoxville, Tenn.,
recently installed this MAC baghouse at an architectural
moulding plant in Roanoke, Ala.
The company also installed this MAC baghouse at a
composite flooring plant in Selma, Ala.
for replacement bags and can provide the
most competitive pricing in the industry.
Size of system is not an issue with
Southern Pneumatics from “mom & pops”
available to make
sure the customer’s
unit is functionally
Not only does the
company handle
wood dust of all
shapes and sizes,
but is capable of
most particulate air
Rutherfordton, N.C.—Parton
Lumber Company Inc., was founded
in 1949 by Verno Parton. Today,
Parton Lumber Co. is owned and
2.8 million board feet of
lumber to be produced.
NEWMAN LUMBER, Meeting Customers’
Needs In A Moments Notice
Wells River, Vt.—Walter
Young, president of Newman
Lumber Co., knows a little bit
about the lumber business.
Over the past 60 years he has
been involved in the forest
products industry.
In 2005, the Youngs changed
the name of Transit Milling Co.
Inc. to Newman Lumber Co.
“This company has a lot of history
and experience, so customers
can put their trust in the
fact that we know what we are
doing,” Young said. “We also
take pride in knowing that we
can do just about any pattern or
product our customers want. I
think we have some of the best
employees to maintain our
machinery.”
Currently, approximately 98
percent of the production is
their own product, and the
remainder is custom milling.
The company is looking to
manufacture close to 15 million
board feet annually.
The Youngs also came in and
revamped the facility, which
included totally black topping
and concreting the shed floors,
adding a new shavings room,
Walter Young, president of the company, leads a team of employees,
which has over 200 years of experience in the forest products
industry and produces Pine and Spruce patterns.
This photo shows an aerial view of Parton Lumber Company’s recent expansion project. The N.C.-
based company added five new dry kilns and a storage building.
operated by a third generation,
Furman and Patrick Parton. The
company now employs approximately
130 employees.
The company, situated on 75
acres, produces all
grades of kiln-dried
Eastern White Pine
shop grade lumber and
Appalachian hardwoods.
The company
manufactures about 37
million board feet of
Eastern White Pine
annually, along with 19
million board feet of
hardwoods in 4/4
through 8/4 thicknesses.
Approximately 5
percent of the production
is sold green/airdried
and the remaining
is kiln-dried.
The firm operates three band
head rigs with one being a twin
band mill, a slant 48-inch carriage
with a seven-foot McDonough
band mill. A Prescott six-foot
resaw, SII steam dry kilns with 2.3
million board feet capacity, two fan
sheds that can each dry 1 million
board feet per charge, a USNR 90-
bay sorter, a 48,000-square-foot
heated lumber storage shed, planing
mill, grading facility and a custom
Yates American S2S planer.
A new twin band horizontal resaw
and a thin kerf edger with chipping
heads were installed in 2004.
“We had bottlenecks in the mill
that existed due to our board
edger not being capable of handling
quite the production,” said
Scott Hughes, vice president.
“Optimization is the name of the
game these days and there is no
substitute for increasing yield, and
this new equipment will help in
those areas.”
Hughes said the company had
added five new dry kilns for a total
prep, container loading, dipping
and/or end coating of lumber.
Parton operates six companyowned
trucks for short deliveries
within a 200-mile radius of the
facility and long hauls
are contracted out
commercially.
The company ships
products throughout
North America and into
Asia, Europe and
Mexico.
“One way we have
diversified is to manufacture
logs for the log
home industry,” said
Alfred Mayo, director
of sales and marketing.
“Sizes range from
4x6 to 8x12 up to 16-
feet long with approximately
9 million board
feet of timbers each year.”
Parton Lumber is a member of
and produces Western Wood
Products Assoc. shop grades, as
well as National Hardwood
Lumber Assoc. In addition, the
company is also a member of the
Appalachian Hardwood
Manufacturers Inc., American
Hardwood Export Council and the
Appalachian Lumbermen’s Club.
Mayo said that Parton Lumber
practices sustainable forestry at
the modern state-of-the-art manufacturing
facility that helps to meet
prompt shipments for customers.
The sales team consists of Jimmy
Clay, Norman Atchley and
Kimberly Clayton for lumber needs
and Stephen Snider for log home
timber requirements.
Parton Lumber is an integrated
lumber manufacturing company
from stump to finished goods and
plans on continuing for many years
to come with production of quality
products.
Carole Young is treasurer and takes care of office administration and bookkeeping, and Diane Castello is
receptionist and assists with bookkeeping at Newman Lumber Co. in Wells River, Vt.
buying six new forklifts and completely
rebuilding the Yates American A20 planer,
changing from eight to 12 knife
heads. Also, the firm put in electronic
equipment to speed up side heads and
profilers from 3500 RPM’s to 6000
RPM’s. Other equipment includes a
Mattison straight-line ripsaw and a new
McDonough 54-inch resaw.
In addition, Newman Lumber built four
50 x 300 dry storage facilities with 15
bays each, which provide the company
with approximately 20 million board feet
of storage, including an existing facility.
Additionally, a 50 x 500 dry storage facility
was recently built on the property.
Newman Lumber is a member of and
produces all the Northeast Lumber
Manufacturers Assoc. (NELMA) patterns,
Western Wood Products Assoc.
(WWPA) patterns, as well as custom
made patterns for customers who provide
specifications. The company has
the capability, the facility and the equipment
to grind and make the knives for
specific customer requests. In addition,
the firm is also a member of the North
American Wholesale Lumber Assoc.
(NAWLA).
Recently, Newman Lumber began
offering Baltic Region Pine and Spruce.
Products offered in the species include:
E, CB & WP4 and log cabin siding, Euro
Spruce 2x6 and 2x8 WP4 16-foot; Euro
Spruce 1/2-inch x 6-inch x 16-foot bevel
siding and finger jointed Baltic Pine,
among others.
With just 10 employees, all of them
play an important role. Key employees
include Walter Young, president and
sales; Carole Young, treasurer and
office administration; and Dianne
Castello, receptionist and assists with
bookkeeping.
Leon LaVaude recently joined the company
as vice president/general manager.
He left a very successful Chevrolet
dealership, also owned by the Youngs
and LaVaude. He is learning how to
grade and remanufacture lumber before
assisting in sales.
The firm ships its products all over
North America. Normal turn around time
for an order is a couple of days, provided
the company has the inventory inhouse.
If it is a custom order, it will generally
be shipped within a week, according
to Young. In order to ensure that the
product arrives to the customer in a
clean and uniformed method, Newman
Lumber paper wraps and canvasses
everything prior to shipping. Customers
include wholesalers and wholesale distributors.
“I think we have one of the most stateof-the-art
facilities for planing on the
East Coast,” Young said. “When it
comes to grinding our knives to making
the patterns, we can control every facet
of the entire operation. I think everyone
who buys from us will enjoy our service
and will want to come back, from the
trucker to the wholesaler to the retail
yards who receive our products from the
wholesale trade. In the event a problem
should occur, we believe in resolving the
problem in an efficient and timely manner
and making a wrong a right.”
Newman Lumber encourages its customers
to come and visit the mill to see
the process from beginning to end, or go
Riddle, Ore.—Alfred Johnson established
his sawmill in 1890 on the banks
of the Coquille River, where Port Orford
Cedar was the preferred building material
among the area’s native Americans
Orford Cedar is
a perfect
choice for both exterior and interior
Among C&D Lumber’s abundant roster
of high-tech equipment is a 16-knife
planer that produces a smooth finish to
the company’s line of Port Orford Cedar
these fine species into siding, paneling
and timbers. Cedar oil is a natural
deterent to decay, resulting in an outdoor
surface free of chemical treatments.
C&D Lumber kiln dries decking to a 19
to a stable product and lighter
In 2004, C&D Lumber revised its
sawmill to produce blemish-free timbers
that are free of dirt, nicks and chain
marks. Premium Exposed rough timbers
are anti-stain and anti-mold treated,
H u r s t , T e x a s —Trinity Forest
Industries Inc., located between Dallas
and Fort Worth, has served the wholesale
lumber, and millwork needs of its
customers since 1982. Business has
been good—so good that a second location
in Albuquerque was added in 1997.
Trinity specializes in
Softwood species
such as Ponderosa
Pine, Sugar Pine,
Douglas Fir (both flat
sawn and vertical
grain), Eastern White
Pine, Yellow Pine and
Radiata Pine. The
company also uses a
wide variety of kilndried
hardwoods, such
as alder, poplar, red
oak, white oak, walnut,
soft and hard maple to
compliment its main
product. Thicknesses
start at 4/4 up to 8/4
through most of the
firm’s inventory, with
some 10/4 and 12/4 in
Sugar Pines and
poplar.
To maximize
the
firm’s flexibility,
Trinity
Forest carries
as lean
an inventory
as possible while maintaining an average
inventory of 250,000 board feet.
“Our strengths are in the Pines and
of stocking
the lumber yards, of course, but we
also work with window, door and furniture
manufacturers, cabinetry people,
millwork manufacturers, and even toy
and craft manufacturing individuals.”
Trinity Forest has even indirectly or
directly provided service for such wellknown
restaurant chains as Chili’s,
Macaroni Grill, Texas Roadhouse and
Ruby Tuesday, among others. Some of
these millwork packages are shipped all
over North America, Japan and Korea.
“We can take care of any pattern work
that’s needed,” said Cortez. “If we don’t
have the knives already, we can produce
them for the customer and can
We’ve got Weinig moulders; we’ve got
cut-to-length jobs to random length. As
we’ll run it. We even run 24’ 7 piece
stock and workmanship is very well recognized.
The company stays in constant touch
with the needs of their
customers and relays
those needs to the
mills Trinity Forest
TAYLOR MACHINE WORKS Celebrates 80 Years
L o u i s v i l l e , M i s s . —Taylor Machine
Works recently celebrated its 80 th anniversary
acknowledging its continuing ties to
the red hills of east central Mississippi.
In addition to the anniversary celebration,
the day looked to the future with the dedication
of the
company’s new
Engineering and
Operations
Center Building.
This latest addition
to the Taylor
facilities provides
13,200
square feet of
additional office
space on two
floors. The building
provides a
contemporary
environment for
the company’s
engineering and
production operations
departments.
Taylor Machine
Works was
established in
Louisville in
1927 by W.A.
Taylor, Sr. From
the initial
machine shop,
Taylor developed
and introduced
the
Logger’s Dream,
a log skidder to
facilitate timber
harvest by small
crews. Its innovative
solution to
the demands of
the forest products
industry and
its rugged,
dependable
operation established
the reputation
of Taylor
Machine Works
for development
and manufacture
of quality materials
handling
equipment. This
reputation quickly
spread
throughout the
United States and into the international
market.
Many expansions in facilities and technological
capabilities have resulted in the
growth of Taylor Machine Works from that
small machine shop to manufacturing and
administrative facilities incorporating more
than 110 acres in Louisville with more than
450,000 square feet of manufacturing and
administrative space under roof. At various
periods during the last 80 years Taylor has
developed facilities throughout Mississippi,
but its core facilities and administrative
activities have always been based in
Louisville.
Throughout its history, Taylor Machine
Works has been owned and operated by
the Taylor family. W.A. “Bill” Taylor Jr. succeeded
his father W.A. “Alec” Taylor Sr., as
president in 1968 and continues to serve
as chairman of the board of directors. W. A.
“Lex” Taylor, III assumed the presidency in
1987. Lex is the third generation of the
Taylor family to lead the company. His
brother, Robert D. Taylor Sr., vice-president
of operations, and sister, Teresa
Taylor Ktsanes, are also actively involved
in management and administration of the
company.
As management of the company has
passed to the second and third generations
of the Taylor family, the employees
who constitute the core of today’s “Big Red
Team” include second, third, and even
fourth generations of the same families
who have played important roles in the
growth and success of Taylor Machine
Works. This “Big Red Team” includes the
multitude of disciplines and aptitudes
needed to maintain a successful business
operation. Included are skilled professionals
and craftsmen in management, design
and engineering, manufacturing, marketing,
and many support activities.
From the Logger’s Dream, the Taylor
product line has expanded to include more
than 100 machine models designed to
meet the needs of material handling professionals
in the forest products, steel,
concrete, intermodal, transportation, marina
and aluminum industries. More than 50
W. A. “Lex” Taylor III, president of Taylor Machine Works, of
Louisville, Miss., leads dedication activities for the company’s
Engineering and Operations Center building.
Collective ribbon cutting is performed by seven great-grandchildren
of W. A. Taylor, Sr. who founded Taylor Machine
Works in 1927 in Louisville, Miss.
Employees and guests stand in line for the 80th Anniversary
luncheon held at the main Taylor plant.
dealers in the United States and Canada,
direct sales representatives in the southeastern
United States, and an international
marketing organization market the Taylor
“Big Red” machines over the entire globe.
According to a comapny spokesperson,
one of the most visible aspects during
Taylor’s 80th year
is introduction of
a new line of
Taylor “Big Red”
machines–the TX
Series. These 24-
inch and 48-inch
load center forklifts
combine
many improvements
in engines,
transmissions,
drive axles, cooling
systems, electrical
systems and
hydraulic systems
to provide customers
with
rugged equipment
designed for
quality performance,
easy serviceability,
and
operational efficiency.
Each
machine includes
the Taylor
Integrated Control
System (TICS)
that utilizes J1939
CAN bus technology
to enable customers
to review
machine operations,
enhance
maintenance and
service capabilities
and monitor
machine performance.
The TX
series incorporates
advancements
in
ergonomic engineering
and many
safety features to
encourage
increased operator
productivity
and safety. The
Taylor TX Series
manifests a tradition
of excellence
built on experience.
The complete line of Taylor’s “Big Red”
fork lift trucks is a long one and includes
pneumatic tire models with lift capacities
from 16,000 to 120,000 pounds and solid
tire models with lifting capacities from
18,000 to 75,000 pounds. These can be
equipped with conventional forks or a number
of innovative attachments that TAY-
LORIZE the trucks to meet many unique
materials handling tasks.
“We are very honored and proud of the
role Taylor Machine Works has been able to
play in the growth and development of
Mississippi in general and Louisville specifically
during the last 80 years,” Lex Taylor
said. “During these years Mississippi has
grown from its agricultural roots to become
a significant player in industrial and business
communities around the world, and
Taylor Machine Works has grown and prospered
as a key component in this transformation.
As the technology demanded for
industry and commerce has dramatically
expanded, Taylor’s engineering and manufacturing
craftsmen have been on the leading
edge of efforts to solve the challenges
expansion has brought. Taylor Machine
Works today utilizes state-of-the-art production
equipment and technologies, the
latest in computer assistance engineering
resources, and highly trained marketing
professionals to assist each customer meet
the performance challenges of his business
with efficiency, productivity, dependability,
and safety.”
From the foundation of Taylor Machine
Works has emerged The Taylor Group of
companies, which includes the original
Taylor Machine Works, Inc., Sudden
Service, Inc., TEMTCO Steel, and Taylor
Power Systems.
Lex Taylor said that “Today–and tomorrow–the
world’s business leaders can
depend on “Big Red” and on the entire “Big
Red Team” to unite FAITH-VISION-WORK
in providing dependable equipment to meet
the challenges faced in handling the varied
materials which keep our vibrant economy
on the move.
SISKIYOU Broadens Product Horizon
Anderson, Calif.—For the past 30-plus
years, Siskiyou Forest Products has
offered customers an ever-broadening
array of products, including industrial
lumber, cutto-size,
finger-jointed
and edgeglued
materials.
The comp
a n y
recently
introduced a
new primed
product for
wood siding
and trim.
This new
product is
Siskiyou
Reserve.
“ O u r
Reserve
line of
primed
Western
Red Cedar
a n d
Redwood
has been
specifically
formulated
for siding,
fascia and
trim. This
durable
exterior
primer
system
includes
two high
performance
coats; the
first coat is
an alkyd
sealer that is
used to block
tannin migration,
the second
coat of a
high performance
a c r y l i c
primer. Our
coating
department
uses stateof-the-art
application
and curing equipment that enables us to
produce a quality primed product,” said
Darren Duchi, general manager of
Siskiyou Forest Products.
“Creating our Reserve line of siding and
trim has been a major investment for us.
It is imperative for Siskiyou to ensure
quality to our customers,” said Duchi.
Until recently, customers typically
shipped wood products purchased from
Siskiyou to a third party, who then
primed the product.
“We were just not satisfied with the
quality of the third party priming. If our
Siskiyou name is going to be on lumber
out in the field, we want absolute control
of the quality, whether it is raw or
primed,” Duchi said. “Prior to the availability
of our current coating system,
customers purchased a product that had
one coat of an oil-based primer. That
single coat would generally look semitransparent.
In other words, you could
see through the coating. Siskiyou
Reserve primer is 100 percent opaque.”
In response to customers’ needs,
Siskiyou Forest Products designed and
developed its Reserve primed products
by utilizing soft-cure technology and low
heat application. Assistance from The
Valspar Corporation enabled Siskiyou to
engineer the coating system.
“Siskiyou has something special. Their
prime line allows them to use a coating
system that’s not commonly used in a
continuous production process on
Western Red Cedar and Redwood,”
said Kevin Simpson, Valspar technical
sales.
“Most businesses that apply an alkydbased
sealer will rack the lumber and let
it air dry,” Duchi said. “They physically
place this product on a rack with finger
marks and then they allow it to dry for 24
hours, restack it, re-wrap it, and send it
By Wayne Miller
on its way. In addition to these quality
issues, a third party primer can often
add additional costs due to increased
time and shipping expense. One benefit
of our service
is that
when you
receive an
invoice, the
product is
enroute to
your facility.”
Siskiyou
inserts a
plastic slips
h e e t
between
each layer
of its primed
Darren Duchi, general manager of Siskiyou Forest Products in
Anderson, Calif., stands beside a shipment of lumber bearing
Siskiyou Reserve, a priming product for wood siding and trim.
Siskiyou staff members are involved in off-bearing of the company’s
prime line.
Stock at Siskiyou feeds into the soft-cure oven.
product to
prevent
damage
during delivery
and to
assure
consistent
quality.
Siskiyou
markets its
Reserve
line of siding
and
t r i m
through
wholesale
distributors.
The company’s
exterior
primed
products
will become
a valued part
of Siskiyou’s
growth projections.
Siskiyou
markets both
Softwoods
and hardwoods.
The
use of
Incense
Cedar and
Alder is primarily
for
door and
window
components.
Reserve trim is only available in Coastal
Western Red Cedar and Redwood.
The majority of Siskiyou’s merchandise
is traded domestically. The company
maintains an inventory of 7 million board
feet at its facility, which is situated on 74
acres. The facility includes 12 kilns and
employs 75 people.
Siskiyou has added new machinery at
its facility in recent years that contributes
to the ongoing evolution of the company.
The technology utilized by Siskiyou
includes a rip line, two moulders, a
crosscut line, two finger jointers, a precision
end trimmer and three radio frequency
edge gluers with sanding and
double end-trimming capability.
Siskiyou plans to further develop its
technology by implementing an optimizing
rip line; an optimizing crosscut line
and a continuous edge glue line.
Mike Webster serves as the purchasing
agent of Redwood and Western Red
Cedar for Siskiyou. Other key company
personnel include Bill Duchi, who oversees
purchasing of Incense Cedar and
hardwood, at the company’s Weed,
Calif., location.
“All of the employees at Siskiyou strive
to enable us to provide the best products
possible for our customers,” added
Duchi. “We have received positive feedback
from customers about our Reserve
line. This is a credit to every person here
who has participated in developing the
product.
“All of us at Siskiyou Forest Products
would like to express our appreciation
for the continued support and loyalty.”
ZIP-O-LOG MILLS Continues To Produce Quality Products
planer mill and timber sizer.
Efforts to establish long-term customer
relationships have been successful,
according to sales manager
Mark Grube, who said some customers
have been buying from the mill
for over 40 years. He added that the
company is willing to go the extra mile
to give customers what they want, and
in a timely fashion — even if it means
producing a custom order that it’s
never tackled before.
“In addition to regular everyday timbers,
we’ve become very proficient at
putting together piece orders and
doing special cuttings for our customers,”
said Joe Honochick, general
manager.
Zip-O-Log is a member of the North
American Wholesale Lumber Assoc.
(NAWLA) and the Pacific Lumber
Inspection Bureau (PLIB). To ensure
quality control — both during produc-
By Wayne Miller
tion and shipping — the company
relies on quality standards instituted
by its founders and carried on by successive
generations.
“We all work toward a common goal
of producing the highest quality products
and to always meet or exceed
our customer’s expectations,”
Hallstrom said.
The owners of the company believe
that keeping up with the latest technology
is a big part of Zip-O-Log Mills’
long-term success, and the company
has consistently reinvested in new
equipment, tweaking product flow to
find new and better methods of
improving production, all to provide
the best quality and service to its customers.
•
Brian Jones, sales; Mark Grube, sales manager; and Joe Honochick, general manager, are all part of the team
at Zip-O-Log, headquartered in Eugene, Ore.
Eugene, Ore.—Zip-O-Log Mills specializes
in carefully crafted, high-quality
timbers available in an impressive
range of stock and custom sizes. The
company’s products may be found in
high-end custom homes, ski lodges,
country clubs, restaurants and even a
40,000-square-foot horse barn.
Zip-O-Log was founded in 1944, and
today is run by the third generation,
Karl and Jim Hallstrom, who are coowners
of the company. Commonly
known as “Zip-O,” the firm promotes
itself as a long length cutting mill that
manufactures 100 percent Douglas
Fir into timbers, posts, beams,
stringers, 3-inch and 4-inch structural,
domestic and export clears, dimension
and specialties. The company
can produce timbers up to 52-feet in
length, and is equipped to saw to size
any dimension for specialty and custom
orders.
“We can do whatever the customer
asks for,” said Karl Hallstrom, adding
that all cuttings are clear-end sealed
with a wax-based seal and additional
options on surfaced products, including
bottom boards for added protection
during shipping and handling as
well as stickering each layer with lath
or kiln sticks. The company also provides
paper wrapping and truck or railcar
shipments.
“We pride ourselves on accurate tallies,
on-time shipments and quality
that meets or exceeds our customer’s
expectations,” Hallstrom said.
The roughly 2 million board feet per
month production is mostly No. 1 and
Better FOHC, rough, full sawn,
Douglas Fir cuttings. The firm offers
posts and timbers in stock FOHC cuttings
in 6x6 to 6x16, 8x8 to 8x16,
10x10 and wider and 12x12 and
wider.
In dimension, stock items include 2-
inch rough fascia in a wide variety of
sizes. The family owned company
also produces about 500,000 board
feet per month of industrial and export
Clear products.
The entire facility is paved, which
makes for cleaner and better working
conditions. The majority of finished
products are stored inside of a
55,000-square-foot shed.
“In the log yard, we inventory our
logs by grade and diameter, so it
makes it easy to go out and shop, just
like being at a supermarket. You pick
the logs you want,” Hallstrom said.
“However, we recently had an order
for several 12x18x48-foot. That’s a big
log and a big stick of wood. We went
out to the log yard and hand picked
the correct logs, had the order out in
one day and shipped it to the customer.
We definitely go the extra mile
to get what our customers need.”
Zip-O-Log mill encompasses nearly
eight acres of mill site and a nine-acre
log yard, located two miles away.
IDAHO TIMBER Employees Contribute To Success
By Terry Miller
The management team of Idaho Timber, located in Boise, Idaho, is made up of
many industry veterans. Ted Ellis, president and chief executive officer, leads
the company, which began in 1979.
Boise, Idaho—Idaho Timber, headquartered
here, believes strongly in the power of
its people — the 700 employees who have
given the company its reputation in the market.
Ted Ellis, president and chief executive
officer, said their hard work is impossible to
duplicate.
“We have found that our business model
from an equipment and manufacturing
standpoint is easy to duplicate,” Ellis said.
“The expertise of the people is nearly impossible
to duplicate due to the base of experience,
length of service and talent we have
been able to attract and retain within our
company.”
Cedar split rail fencing, shown here, is one of many products
produced and sold by Idaho Timber.
Idaho Timber, which began in 1979, maintains
a sawmilling operation in Carthage,
Ark., which specializes in 5/4 Southern
Yellow Pine decking and 2x4 to 2x12 dimension;
a Cedar split rail fencing mill in Troy,
Idaho; and three locations for its home center
business.
The Weiser, Idaho, facility produces boards
in Ponderosa Pine and Spruce (1x4 to
1x12), Lodgepole Pine (1x4 through 1x12),
pattern stock and strips (1x2, 1x3, 2x2). The
Whitefish, Mont., plant manufactures the
same items along with Cedar and Radiata
boards in 1x4 through 1x12.
The Chadbourn, N.C., facility was con-
structed in 2006 and produces Spruce-Pine-
Fir (SPF) and European Spruce studs and
dimension (2x4 through 2x12), Ponderosa
Pine, Engelmann Spruce and European
Spruce boards (1x4 through 1x12), pattern
stock, edge-glued boards and specialties.
The company has six other manufacturing
and distribution operations, which are located
in Lake City, Fla., Fort Worth, Texas,
Halstead, Kan., Albuquerque, N.M.,
Henderson, N.C. and Boise, Idaho.
“We wanted to concentrate on a supply that
is available in large quantities and would fuel
our significant operations,” he said. “(SPF) is
widely accepted and certified for construc-
Idaho Timber maintains 11 facilities throughout the U.S., including this
manufacturing and distribution operation in Henderson, N.C.
tion use by American lumber standards and
is the predominate species produced in our
dimension operations.”
Ellis said Idaho Timber’s claim to fame is
“having enough of the items that people
need on a daily basis and attempting to provide
them within 24 hours to our customers.”
“We are a very service-oriented organization,”
he said. “We’re known for our people
and our ability to service our customers.
Most of our managers have grown from the
bottom up and gained a tremendous amount
of experience.
“They have greater empathy and understand
their customer’s needs,” Ellis said.
“That’s what allows you to be the best at
what you do. Our compensation arrangements
for managers are significant enough
and based on performance that it discourages
the most talented people from leaving
prematurely.”
In addition to Ellis, Idaho Timber is led by
Scott Beechie, vice president/chief financial
officer; George Karr, vice president; and
Dave Taugher, vice president of human
resources.
Other top management includes: Ash
Cockcroft, controller; Darrell Gottschalk,
general manager of plants/equipment; Bill
Grzanic, general manager of information
technology; Maurice Van Hall, general manager
of production/quality control; Ann
Idaho Timber produces approximately 800
million board feet annually. The numerous
facilities provide more than 1 million square
feet of manufacturing space, Ellis said.
Approximately 100 million board feet of lumber
is kept in inventory.
“Outside of our own primary production, we
remanufacture over 600 million board feet
(of lumber annually), not including wholesaled
wood,” he said. “Wholesaled wood
accounts for approximately another 100 million.”
Ninety percent of the supply comes
from the U.S. and Canada with another 10
percent being purchased from Europe, New
Zealand and South America.
Idaho Timber’s original partners sold the
business in May 2005 to investment company
Leucadia National Corp., based in New
York City, N.Y.
Idaho Timber is a member of the North
American Wholesale Lumber Assoc.
(NAWLA), Temperate Forest Foundation,
Sustainable Forest Initiative and Forest
Stewardship Council. The company participates
annually at NAWLA and Canadian
Lumbermen’s Assoc. conventions and
regional buying shows.
Ellis said Idaho Timber was established in
1979 as a wholesale lumber trading office
and soon after began purchasing and building
manufacturing plants. “We plan to grow
in the areas of distribution and primary manufacturing
(sawmilling),” he said. For more
Continued Improvements, Expansions Occurring At ENYEART CEDAR
At Enyeart Cedar’s headquarters, located in Tigard, Ore., the company
is represented by: (from left) Alexis Enyeart, Carol Perrier, Jocelyn
Evans, Brock Enyeart, Marc Irby, John Reed, Marty Goldsmith, Ron
Enyeart and Ryan Walters.
T i g a r d , O r e . —Enyeart’s recent
upgrade to their new computer networking
system allows “real time” communication
between the home office, which is
located here, and the plant in North Idaho.
This communication is resulting in efficient
and simultaneous tracking of customer
orders by Enyeart personnel in
both of the company’s locations. The 2-
story mill office and a spacious storage
area were built last year. This year also
brought many other improvements to
Enyeart’s finished products manufacturing
facility, located in Smelterville, Idaho,
near Coeur d’Alene. At this time the mill
expansion will include a sticker stacker
and new sorting line to move Cedar
through the manufacturing process more
efficiently. The milling operation hosts
separate buildings for the company’s
planer, resaw, dry kiln and shipping,
where products are bundled, end-capped
and wrapped. The mill, which is situated
on 15 acres of asphalt-surfaced land, produces
about 20 million board feet of
Cedar Mountain Brand TM products annually
and maintains a large inventory of other
products.
Enyeart is also installing a new hammer
hog and blowing system to move the
mill’s planer shavings and sawdust away
from the mill to be trucked away. Other
improvements also include a new labeling,
bar-coding, and tracking system on
every unit of Cedar leaving the shipping
facility.
At least 12 to 15 truckloads of specialty
items are shipped daily from Enyeart,
which has grown from a company of two
people in 1995 to 40 employees today.
Products shipped from the operation
include rough timbers, rough dimension,
S4S dimension, green and dry boards,
clear and knotty bevels and clear and
knotty trim, along with Cedar roofing and
sidewall products. Ron Enyeart, company
president and owner, credits his staff’s
ability to procure the right raw materials
for manufacturing with enabling the company
to excel over its competitors, particularly
in regard to the company’s Cedar
Mountain Brand products. This allows
Enyeart to consistently meet customers’
needs for specific, customized orders for
length, width, pattern, quality and volume.
The bevel siding and kiln-dried products
continue to be kept in the newly built storage
area at the mill in order to protect the
quality of these products.
This new storage area enables Enyeart
to keep customer orders fulfilled on
schedule while providing adequate storage
and protection for the products. It’s
also big enough to allow Enyeart to continue
to grow in customer orders.
This year Enyeart has also introduced
their new product logo, which is significant
because it better reflects the region
in which the mill is located. The Silver
Valley is a beautiful area with mountains
and trees, rivers, wildlife, and attractions
that the new logo proudly displays in its
scene. This new logo is now being placed
on the wrap of all company manufactured
products.
“We have enjoyed consistent growth as
a company in spite of the challenges this
year has had,” Enyeart said. “It has been
challenging keeping Cedar products
before our customers in such a tight supply
market, but we have maintained delivery
to customers in a timely manner.”
The staff at the mill works two back-toback
overtime shifts, six days a week,
beginning at 5:30 a.m. and finishing at
1:30 a.m. to accommodate the steady volume
of orders to customers. Enyeart has
learned that growth brings challenges as
Enyeart’s recent upgrade to their new computer networking system
allows “real time” communication between the home office, which is
located in Tigard, Ore., and the plant in North Idaho.
well as benefits.
“Everything that we have upgraded—
from computer technology to increased
storage space to machinery—is in order
to offer premium customer service,” said
Enyeart.
Enyeart Cedar Products manufactures
about 20 percent of the products it sells,
and purchases the rest of its finished
materials from Western Red Cedar and
Inland Red Cedar manufacturers in the
Pacific Northwest, and through their
exclusive marketing agreements with several
Cedar producers.
RoyOMartin-owned Rocky Creek Lumber, located in Mexia, Ala., has gained in popularity due to its Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) timbers.
IRVING FOREST PRODUCTS
The Largest Producer of Eastern White Pine
Mexia, Ala.—Since 1923 and over
the course of four generations,
RoyOMartin has grown to become one
of the largest, family-owned forest products
companies in the southern United
States. Today it operates five production
facilities across Central Louisiana,
Alabama, and Arkansas. A diversified
manufacturer of quality oriented strand
board (OSB), plywood, hardwood and
Softwood lumber, timbers, and pressure-treated
poles, RoyOMartin’s facilities
are supplied primarily by the company’s
nearly 600,000 acres of prime
Louisiana timberlands, all of which are
certified by the Forest Stewardship
Council (FSC).
Like its sister mills, RoyOMartin’s
Mexia, Ala., facility, Rocky Creek
Lumber Company, has gained quite a
following for its Southern Yellow Pine
(SYP) timbers. The timbers are marketed
for numerous applications including
wooden fences, outdoor decks, docks,
retaining walls, landscaping, highway
guardrails and agricultural buildings.
Rocky Creek, which opened in 2001
and was acquired by RoyOMartin in
March 2006, processes approximately
90 million board feet of Pine lumber
annually, in various sizes including 2x4,
2x6, 3x4, 4x4, 5x5 and 6x6 (No. 1
through utility grades). The 102-acre
facility houses a log merchandiser, chipper-head
saws, edger, trimmers, planers,
sorters and three dry kilns. All production
is kiln dried in high-temperature,
multi-zoned kilns.
Among Rocky Creek’s approximately
80 employees are Bob Packman, Vice
President of Solid Wood Products; Allen
RoyOMartin takes pride in being large
enough to serve the global market and
small enough to care about each customer.
Throughout its 84 years of evolution
and growth, the organization has
remained family-owned, professionally
managed, and true to the business
ethics and values of its founder, Roy O.
Martin, Sr. Its reputation and success is
largely attributable to owner involvement,
At KOOTENAY, Softwood Is A Natural Fit
In 1939, Koozma Kalesnikoff identified an opportunity in the healthy, green
valley—Softwood timber. He attained timber rights near China Creek, and
with his brothers began logging, using nothing but axes, cross-cut saws
and horses. This marked the first step toward the eventual establishment of
Kootenay Innovative Wood, located in South Slocan, B.C.
South Slocun, B.C.—A beautiful valley
surrounded by towering mountains and
rushing rivers was what initially attracted
the Kalesnikoff’s to the Kootenay region of
British Columbia in 1911. Moving from
Russia with the anticipation of peace and
prosperity, the family struggled through
the Great Depression. The beauty and
potential of their new homeland kept them
motivated – and unknown to them at the
time, would be what would ultimately
become the key to their success.
In 1939, Koozma Kalesnikoff identified an
opportunity in the healthy, green valley —
Softwood timber. He attained timber rights
on an area known as China Creek, and
with his two brothers began logging in the
wilderness of B.C., using nothing but axes,
cross-cut saws and horses. By the summer
of 1940, they had an established
sawmill and the beginnings of what would
eventually become the successful remanufacturing
facility that exists today.
Maintaining the beauty of the valley was
paramount to the Kalesnikoff’s. From the
beginning their guiding philosophy had
been: “Take care of the land and the land
will take care of you.” Before reforestation
policies existed in B.C., the Kalesnikoff
family was performing sound forest practices,
ensuring they could pass on a successful
business and healthy land to their family for
generations to come.
At 14 years of age Koozma’s nephew, Peter,
joined the mill and soon became a driving
force in the expansion of the company. Under
his tight financial management and vision,
Peter saw the 3,000 FBM per day bush
sawmill grow substantially. In 1977, Peter’s
son, Ken, became involved in the family business
and has since carried forward the expansion
of the mill.
In 2001 Elaine Kalesnikoff, saw another
opportunity. With numerous requests for custom
processing of lumber, she proposed the
building of a remanufacturing facility to produce
value-added products for their customers.
That was the beginning of Kootenay
Innovative Wood Ltd. (KIW).
Kootenay Innovative Wood Ltd. is now a
large, modern remanufacturing plant located
in the Wet Belt of scenic Southeastern British
Columbia. This area provides the optimum
environment for natural growth of a variety of
the Softwood species utilized by KIW, including
Douglas Fir, Western Larch, Pine and
Engelman Spruce. This superior fiber quality
and beautiful dense grain is perfectly suited
for the value-added specialty wood products
HOOD DISTRIBUTION/MCQUESTEN GROUP’s Success Based On Partnerships
Chris Macfarlane serves as branch manager for Hood
Distribution.
Hood’s assistant branch manager is Bob Howard.
Hood Distribution facilities cover an 11-acre area in Milton, Vt.,
where employees operate in a 15,000-square-foot building,
which was constructed in 1989.
M i l t o n , V t . — Since opening a
facility here in 1989, Hood
Distribution/McQuesten Group has developed
a large customer base, mainly on
the strength of business relationships.
Chris Macfarlane, Milton branch manager,
said the company has developed partnerships
with several high-quality operations
including Durgin & Crowell Lumber
Co., Inc.
Macfarlane said the Eastern White Pine
producer often runs product for Hood
before an order is even placed.
“This is the kind of partnership with our
vendors where price becomes secondary
to the quality of the product we buy and
how quickly we can get it to our customer,”
he said. “Our customers know
when they purchase from us that they will
get the same mill and the same thing day
in and day out.”
In addition to Milton, Hood Distribution
operates three other facilities in
Manchester, Conn., Portland, Maine and
Billerica, Mass. The four locations combined
cover all of the New England area
and most of New York State.
“Some of our competitors have one location
and have to truck stuff a long way,”
Macfarlane said. “Therefore, they suffer in
service. We have four locations, a broad-
er inventory and we’re able to get it
to the customer that much quicker.”
The distributor recently commissioned
a regional transfer truck to send
shipments between the branches.
Macfarlane said the addition of the truck
will help in reducing company inventory
and distributing products to customers
quicker.
The company operates a total of 14
trucks — five in Milton, two in Portland,
three in Manchester and four in Billerica.
Approximately half of the trailers are curtain
side, which protects material from the
elements or handling damage.
Macfarlane said the goal is for all trailers
to be curtain side by 2009.
The Milton facility opened in a 15,000-
square-foot building in 1989 and has
since grown to over 35,000 square feet in
under coverage storage. Some 18
employees make up the team here including
Macfarlane; Bob Howard, assistant
branch manager; Ryan McCarthy, inhouse
designer; four outside sales people;
five truck drivers; five yard workers;
and an engineer.
Macfarlane said Hood Distribution not
only offers a broader inventory than some
competitors, but also a larger sales staff.
The company has employed, 12 outside
salesmen throughout New England &
New York, including Joe Siemion in
Syracuse, N.Y., and Kevin Porter in
Albany, N.Y. Porter, an employee of 20-
plus years, was added to the outside
sales staff in 2001.
Other unique advantages Hood
Distribution has are strategic selling seminars
and West Coast mill tours,
Macfarlane said. The seminars, led by
various vendors, give salesmen knowledge
on how to market certain products.
“We want to make sure that our sales
people know our mill and our mill knows
our customer,” he said. “We’re constantly
fine tuning our inventory and making sure
that what works today continues to work
tomorrow. We’re also bringing in new
lines to make sure we keep the pipe line
full.” “You can never experiment enough
with new products, there has to be new
products to sell always!”
Macfarlane said the Milton facility offers
the most diverse inventory of any of the
branches. The distributor markets Jaeger
engineered wood products and rim
boards, Finnforest LVLs (laminated
veneer lumber), Rosboro pressure treated
glulams and Anthony Forest Products
Co. Southern Yellow Pine glulams.
Hood Distribution also handles products
from other manufacturers including &
Crowell, Old Town Lumber, Newman
Lumber, Selkirk, Sierra Pacific,
CedarSource, Western Lumber Co. and
Patrick Lumber.
Macfarlane said the managers of each
facility are heavily involved in the decision-making.
He meets often with John
Junod, Billerica; Bob Lattanzi,
Manchester; and Tom Eastman, Portland.
“We don’t make a lot of knee jerk decisions,”
he said. “The last thing in the world
we want to do is put a load of material in
here from a mill that we’re not prepared to
market and the mill is not prepared to help
us sell it.”
Macfarlane said work ethic from the top
down is what separates Hood Distribution
from the pack.
“From the branch manager (on down),
everybody is focused on the goal of making
sure that our customer is satisfied with
the product, that he gets it on time and
everybody works at it together,” he said.
“That’s something you cannot put a price
tag on.
“We’re dedicated to this marketplace,”
Macfarlane said. “The work ethic is second
to none and that shows by what our
people will do for us and how they go to
bat for us every day. That’s an important
part of our image.”
