Background
Council received the following email from the Ministry for Planning.
Ministry for Planning - Coastal Planning Program (Gascoyne)
** Coastal Planning Program
** Draft Status of Coastal Planning in WA Report, prepared by the Ministry for Planning
The Ministry for Planning is developing a program of coastal land use and management planning to
ensure that adequate tools exist to guide coastal resource use and management. It is anticipated that
implementation of such a program would seek to develop partnerships with local government and
other relevant stakeholders.
In order to develop a coastal planning program, a snapshot of existing plans and recommendations
has been developed - the Status of Coastal Planning in WA Report - which identifies key outstanding
coastal planning tasks. Excerpts of this report relevant to your area are attached for your interest
and comment. Your comments are particularly sought on the draft list of outstanding planning
tasks at this stage.
You may recall that your input into this process was requested during July 2000 via a "Local
Government Feedback Form". At that time, coastal local governments were requested to identify
plans in their area, and comment on their usefulness and relevance to coastal management. Seventy
five percent of coastal local governments provided input at that time.
Please accept the attachments as information that has arisen from this survey process. The attached
files are excerpts from the Status of Coastal Planning in WA Report -
1 Executive Summary (including full list of Outstanding Planning Tasks), Introduction and
relevant Regional Description
2 Relevant Regional Tables, and
3 Regional Coastal Planning Map
As you review the attached documents, I would like to draw your attention to the following points -
* The outstanding planning tasks that have been identified will form the basis of the coastal
Planning Program
* These planning tasks have not yet been prioritised. Comments on the priority of planning
tasks in your region are sought at this stage
* The Coastal Planning Program will primarily focus on areas under local government
management, or unvested crown land. In areas where regional strategies have been identified
it may be suitable to incorporate other vested areas (eg CALM managed lands) in the study
areas. This will be determined as part of the preparation of a brief for each project, in
consultation with relevant stakeholders
* Implementation of the Coastal Planning Program will involve further liaison and the
development of partnerships with relevant local governments and local stakeholders to ensure
adequate planning tools are developed, and
* Priorities for planning tasks will be updated annually, through a similar survey process as
conducted in June 2000.
I hope you find this information useful, and thank you for your input to bring the development of a
Coastal Planning Program to this stage. Please do spend some time considering the key projects for
your region. Your on-ground knowledge is critical to assist with the establishment of an effective
