District Initiatives
Professional Learning
Communities
Laramie County School
District 1 has implemented
Professional Learning
Communities (PLCs) for
three years. During this
time, district-wide staff
development has occurred
with additional training at
department and school sites.
PLCs provide:
✓ A focus on learning
✓ A collaborative culture
with a focus on learning for
all students
✓ Collective inquiry
into best practice and
understanding current reality
✓ Action orientation
✓ A commitment to
continuous improvement
✓ Results orientation
Through the PLC process, the district has aligned
the instructional program in the following ways:
• Essential skills for all grade levels have been
identified at the school level.
• Interventions have been developed to engage
students early when they are not meeting the
essential skills.
• Schools have been organized into collaborative
teams that focus on all students.
• One-hundred percent of all schools in the
district are deeply engaged in the PLC process.
The LCSD1 Board of Trustees’ commitment and
support of Professional Learning Communities has
enabled the district to make significant progress.
Due to these clear expectations, staff will continue
to focus on PLC implementation to maximize
student learning.
Instructional Coaches
Instructional coaches have
also been working inside
the district for three years.
Funding for the program
comes directly from the
Wyoming Legislature based
on the size of the district.
Instructional coaches,
which include instructional
facilitators, technology
integration specialists
and teachers on special
assignment, help teachers at
all levels improve instructional
methods. Their role is to
provide job-embedded staff
development to all teachers
throughout the district with
focus on:
• Reading and writing at all
levels in all content areas
• Math
• Implementation of technology to enhance
instruction and support student learning
• Consistent implementation of district programs
• New teacher training
Instructional coaches are also engaged in working
with teachers to implement PLCs, data analysis
and implementation of the district assessment
system. Coaches provide an opportunity for
staff development without pulling teachers out
of the classroom for training. They are a critical
component in the consistent implementation of
district programs such as guided reading, Bridges,
Everyday and Connected Math, and other districtwide
initiatives.
