Advocacy <strong>Services</strong><br />

Aims<br />

• To help people to stand up for themselves and to empower people to be<br />

heard by other people or organizations who have power over them.<br />

Main Activities and <strong>Services</strong><br />

• Currently there are no specific services for people with an acquired brain<br />

injury in <strong>Glasgow</strong>, but you may be able to use another advocacy service if<br />

you fit into another category (e.g. if you are an older person or you also have<br />

a mental health problem). There are at least 14 different projects in and<br />

around <strong>Glasgow</strong>.<br />

• Advocacy <strong>Services</strong> are usually provided by independent voluntary<br />

organisations. These organisations deliver advocacy in a number <strong>of</strong> ways<br />

including; Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Advocacy, usually provided by a paid worker, who will<br />

work with a number <strong>of</strong> people. The support they <strong>of</strong>fer is usually focussed on<br />

specific issues and time limited. Citizen Advocacy, where an unpaid, ordinary<br />

person is asked to get to know and represent just one person over a longer<br />

period <strong>of</strong> time and Group/Collective advocacy people coming together as a<br />

group to support each other and tackle shared issues, helped by an advocacy<br />

project.<br />
