DESCRIPTION:
The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) screens for non-psychotic psychiatric
disorders in medical and non-psychiatric community settings. The GHQ is not
designed to differentiate various psychiatric disorders. However, the assumption
is that underlying mental disorders are two major communalities and therefore the
GHQ focuses on two major areas, the disruption to daily living activities and the
appearance of subjective distress.
ADMINISTRATION:
• Method: Self-administered paper-pencil, although verbal administration
are often reported in the literature (e.g., El-Rufaie et al,1996,1997).
• Scoring: The GHQ is scored on a 4-point Likert scale anchored from (0)
to (3) and the overall GHQ score is the sum of all item scores. Note that
alternative scoring systems have been developed Goldberg & Williams,
1988; Goodchild & Duncan-Jones, 1985). GHQ-60 uses a full scale
score. The GHQ also uses a full scale score and items relating to
physical illness have been removed. Full score and sub scales for
GHQ-28: somatic symptoms, anxiety/insomnia, social dysfunction and
severe depression.
