Active families<br />
• Slightly more people participate who do not have children U18 years (55%).<br />
However, those that do have children U18 years participate more frequently.<br />
• Fitness and Nature and Adventurer are more likely to have Children U18 years.<br />
• Taking part in day visits for active pursuits/sports were more likely to involve<br />
those with children (GB Day Visits 2012, Visit England).<br />
• Approximately 70% of all children who participate <strong>outdoors</strong> do so with<br />
an adult from their household. 15% of all children took visits with their<br />
grandparents (MENE, ’13).<br />
Once connected to nature, committed for life<br />
• 43% start participating before 15 years and 100% started before 23 years<br />
(a similar pattern was <strong>report</strong>ed in the recent Snowsports and Watersports<br />
Participation surveys, 2013).<br />
• Early exposure to outdoor activities can make a lasting impression. More who<br />
are introduced to <strong>outdoors</strong> activities as children and adolescents grow up to<br />
choose an active <strong>outdoors</strong> lifestyle. Explorers start at an early age whilst other<br />
segments are more likely to start in early teens.<br />
• 15% more people in the UK aged over 55 had enjoyed outdoor experiences in<br />
their childhood compared to people between 15 and 34 years old. 92% of the<br />
British public agree that these experiences are still important to children today,<br />
and 82% agree that schools should play a role in providing them to all children<br />
(RSPB, Every Child Outdoors, 2010).<br />
