Objective Description CAF / other SAF
Evapotranspiration
LSA will be user of H-SAF products.
Use of LSA SAF snow
detection product
Large scale surface soil
moisture by radar
scatterometer
No cooperation model necessary
2.3.10.1 Interactions: Precipitation Products
Cooperation with GPM
The product is generated by LSA SAF, its maintenance and
Validation will be carried on by H-SAF.
The sharing of tasks between H-SAF and LSA-SAF will be
ruled by a specific “service level agreement”.
The product is generated at the CAF on behalf of H SAF.
H-SAF (TU Wien) will support the operations activities
LSA SAF
During the previous phases the consortium contacted the GPM management to discuss a possible
cooperation. There were several contacts between the SAF and the GPM management in order to
explore a suitable collaboration framework. The most effective avenue currently being examined is
an agreement as part of the general EUMETSAT-NASA agreement so that the overall institutional
and technical aspects are taken into proper consideration. In this context H-SAF aims at becoming a
user of NASA GPM data on one side and also a direct collaborator of GPM as to the European and
African scenario on the other.
The cooperation with GPM will involve the following issues:
- Validation of GPM products using the SAF’s Precipitation Product Validation network, whcih is
to be considered an asset for GPM;
- Development of two H-SAF precipitation products (H19 and H20) making use of the GPM
Microwave Imager (GMI) data and the Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) products and
data (please refer to WP number D-2240 and D-2245 at pag 8 and 9 in Annex I) with special
emphasis on the H-SAF area of interest;
- Expected improvement of the IR (GEO) + MW (LEO) different H-SAF products (H03, H04, H40
and H41), based on blending and morphing techniques deriving from the availability of GPM
and related products.
Moreover, the possibility of including GPM products into the SAF framework and an exchange of
software are being examined and will be considered for inclusion into the agreement.
The agreement will be possibly signed during the first semester of 2013 thus setting the necessary
institutional framework for the cooperation before launch. However, note that the GPM launch date
is yet to be finalized and thus a thorough planning of algorithm development is currently beyond
reach.
