Objectives and tasks:
Activities In Italy (DPC) – Responsible Institute
The activity of this WP consists of:
receiving the H-SAF products in NRT, generally via EUMETCast;
recording operational features such as actual arrival, timeliness, intelligibility;
provide a bulletin to ITAF CNMCA on operational monitoring results. The bulletin will act as a continuous
monitoring of the operational effectiveness of the different operational chains and will inform almost in
real time of the possible failures in the transmission of data.
Identification and monitoring of the NRT operational features of Products is performed to support the
operational chain for possible improvement.
Activities in Austria (ZAMG)
Provision of feedback on the technical and scientific aspects of the operationally produced soil moisture products,
including timeliness, visualisation and quality assessment.
Activities in Belgium (IRM)
A number of products will be received in NRT for operational use, their operational features will be recorded, a
first quality assessment will be performed and a feedback provided to ITAF CNMCA. This workpackage will require
to set-up automatic procedures to help the monitoring of the products. For this activity, potential partners will be
contacted like the Weather Bureau of IRM in charge of severe weather warnings and Regional Authorities in
charge of floods and droughts and with whom IRM has a long standing collaboration.
Activities in ECMWF
ECMWF operational Near Real Time monitoring of the ASCAT global surface soil moisture (SM) product will be
continued in the H-SAF CDOP-2. ASCAT soil moisture monitoring relies on the ECMWF Integrated Forecasting
System (IFS).
Monitoring satellite products performances by watching observation values as well as first guess
and analysis departures is highly relevant both to prepare the satellite product data assimilation and to give a
real-time feedback on the product quality. These activities require permanent resources to maintain data use in
the IFS, to update the operational monitoring web page, to update the visualization tools, etc. Monitoring of
ASCAT soil moisture provides NRT assessment of the products quality at global scale and at regional scale.
Activities in Finland (FMI)
Monitoring of production chains to assess operational features.
FMI monitors the production chain for non-mountainous areas to recognise problems in production,
dissemination or availability of input data. Also, the monitoring of merging of non-mountainous and mountainous
products to final output products is on the responsibility of FMI.
Activities in France (MeteoFrance)
Activities in France: NRT acquisition of the SMOSMANIA data and regular comparison with the ASCAT soil
moisture products. Contribution to OR and VR reports.
Activities in Germany(BfG)
Monitoring of the performance of the H-SAF data distribution system
Activities can be summarised as:
- operation of a satellite reception station and processing software.
- adaptation of the developed processing and reporting workflow to new requirements
- performing the processing and reporting workflow
- receiving the H-SAF products in NRT for operational use (acquisition of products from other SAF’s, of
interest for Hydrology and Civil protection, will be preformed
- recording operational features such as actual arrival, timeliness, intelligibility;
- providing end-users’ quality assessment.
