clear positive influence.” If we bear in mind that the minutes of the shareholders’
meetings and the Board of Directors are written in a thoroughly cold legal tone,
this long declaration of intent has to be considered extraordinary and intended.
The moment is important for the company. The president’s declaration was to be
accompanied by a formal fact; the indefinite extension of the life of the company,
and two positive and linked novelties: the announcement of the return of Linde to
the shareholders, with all that this entailed, and a capital increase. The extension
was foreseeable, as the life of the company was due to end officially at the end of
1962 and there was nothing to suggest they were going to let it die. But the entry
in the capital of Linde indicated that they would have available new technology
and new investment at the service of the company.
The period 1956-1975 was one of strong expansion for Abelló, Oxígeno-
Linde SA. A period of industrial and financial expansion that did not come to an
end until 1974, when concern was expressed for the poor industrial situation and
the low demand for gases.
