FRANCESC CABANA I VANCELLS
orn in 1934 in Barcelona, he holds a degree in Law and is a Member
Bof the Bar Association of Barcelona. He has worked in the Barcelona
Stock Exchange (1957-1959), in Banca Catalana (1959-1982), as a
consultant on behalf of the World Bank for Third World Countries, in the financial
sector (1984-1992), and as an associate professor of Universitat Internacional de
Catalunya (UIC) (International University of Catalonia) for eight years (1997-2005).
He has had many works published related to the Catalan economy such as
La Banca a Catalunya (1965), Bancs i banquers a Catalunya (1972), Història del
Banc de Barcelona, 1844-1920 (1978), Les multinacionals a Catalunya (1984),
Banca Catalana. Diari personal (1988), Fàbriques i Empresaris. Els protagonistes
de la Revolució Industrial a Catalunya (1991-1993), La Burgesia Catalana. Una
aproximació històrica (1996), Caixes i Bancs de Catalunya (1996-2000), Episodis
de la burgesia catalana (1998), 37 anys de franquisme a Catalunya (2000),
25 anys de llibertat, autonomia i centralisme 1976-2000. Una visió econòmica
(2002), Agrupació Mútua. 100 anys (2002) DAMM. Mestres cervesers des de
1876 (2002), Madrid i el centralisme. Un fre a l’economia catalana (2003), Els
anys de l’estraperlo (2005), Història del Col·legi d’Economistes de Catalunya
(2005) and La saga dels cotoners catalans (2006), among others.
He was coordinator and one of the authors of the book Història Econòmica
de la Catalunya Contemporània (under the supervision of Dr. Jordi Nadal) and Cien
empresarios catalanes (2006). He is a regular columnist for the newspaper AVUI.
Some of the prizes he has won are:
– The Estudis Prize in the 4 th edition of the Bonaplata de Patrimoni Cultural
Prizes awarded by the Associació del Museu de la Ciència i de la Tècnica i
d’Arqueologia Industrial de Catalunya (Association of the Museum of Science and
Industrial Technique and Archaeology of Catalonia) for his work Fàbriques i
Empresaris.
– 1 st Prize in the Joan Sardà i Dexeus Awards, granted by the Economists’
Association of Catalonia, for his work entitled Caixes i Bancs de Catalunya.
– Creu de Sant Jordi (Saint Georg Cross) (1998).
– Honorary Member of the Catalan Association of Journalists (2003).
– Honorary Member of the Economists’ Association of Catalonia (2006).
– Colegiado de honor del Col·legi d’Economistas de Catalunya (2006).
