Properties The purchase of property corresponds exclusively to the company’s industrial interests, in which it is a strategy of territorial expansion and replacement of old centres. The sale of buildings and land comes about through the sale of those that had been the company’s first premises. In 1985 the land occupied by the old El Grau factory in Valencia was sold, 7 while in 1989 it was time to sell off that of La Sagrera, the Abelló brothers’ old Joia Catalana. In 1985 land was purchased in the Malpica industrial estate (Zaragoza) and in 1986, in the San Marcos industrial estate, in Getafe (Madrid), and some in Castellón destined for a warehouse. But the heaviest investment was the purchase of the land in Rubí and the construction of several buildings that culminated with the air fractioning plant. Industrial Investment Investment was constant, both in productive equipment and in the means of distribution, gasification stations, cryogenic tankers and steel containers. In 1990 the sinking fund was cancelled, which reduced the cost of the investments made. In its last year (1989), this fund represented 64% of the value of all the company’s industrial investments, a very high figure. The policy was maintained of applying strong rates of depreciation annually to all the immovable assets. Production and bottling centres In 1984 Abelló, Oxígeno-<strong>Linde</strong> had production and bottling centres in Barcelona, Puçol, Òdena, Sant Feliu de Llobregat and Tarragona, plus those corresponding to their subsidiary companies. In 1988 the centres in Cartagena, Getafe and Rubí were opened, and in 1989 a bottling plant was opened in the San Marcos industrial estate in Getafe. 7. CA, October 10 1985. But the most important centre created in those years was the one in Rubí – Vallès Occidental – to replace the one that had closed in Barcelona – La Sagrera. After the purchase of the land and its preparation, a specialty gases laboratory was built and a building for the installations and development services workshop (1990). The equipment from La Sagrera ended up there. The air fractioning plant, which rounded off the whole, was opened in 1996. In the rest of Catalonia we should mention a helium purification and liquefaction plant in Sant Feliu de Llobregat and the installations opened in Celrà (Gironès) in 1998. The acetylene plant in Tarragona was closed down in 1994. In the Valencia region the centre at Puçol was maintained, where in 1994 a nitrogen protoxide (N 2 O) plant was installed. In 1995 a plant for storing and bottling gases was opened in Dos Hermanas – Seville – where the Andalusia regional office was moved.
