The Abellós of La Riba went to live in Terrassa. The exact year they moved
is not known. It must have been before 1873, as José, the youngest member of
the family, was born there. They probably went there to improve, possibly called
by their relatives. What we know is that Isidro Abelló i Espinach became a partner
of his cousin Juan Abelló i Bufí, and both of them ran the business which at the
end of the century was called Abelló, Vallès i Companyia, specialising in the
construction and repair of machinery for the woollens industry.
From Terrassa to Barcelona
Isidro Abelló i Espinach fitted in well in Terrassa. So well that in 1877 he
was appointed deputy mayor at the Town Hall, the same year that the town was
upgraded to the rank of city. It then had a population of 11,000. Soon after that he
was elected mayor. He died on May 20 th 1880, when he was in possession of this
post. His widow, who continued the family diary, now in a rather incorrect Spanish,
wrote: “he died of an illness that lasted 25 days, a pneumonia, a misfortune for
my whole family, at the age of 52. He died as Mayor of Terrassa, and at the
funeral there were over 600 people in attendance”. Four years later, in 1884, their
daughter Teresa died, “of an inflammation of the kidneys at the age of 28.”
