From 1890 Carl von Linde lived in Munich and, with the move, his research work and his focus of interest passed from refrigeration to the liquefaction of gases. By summer 1894 he had drawn up the project for a liquid air installation, which he called an “oxygen machine” in his letters, a clear indication of what he was proposing. A year later this installation had already been set up in the town of Höllriegelskreuth, near Munich, to be known as Section B, to distinguish it from the Wiesbaden Section A. But it was to be hard work. Whereas achieving the liquefaction of air took him only a few months, he needed a good few years to achieve the separation of oxygen and nitrogen in good conditions. And he managed it by introducing rectification columns, that is, of fractioned distillation of the liquid air with the aim of separating out its components. In 1902, Linde built the first rectification column for obtaining oxygen, and in 1910, the device with two rectification columns that allowed him to obtain “pure” oxygen and “pure” nitrogen. Carl von Linde has been defined as a person in whom scientific knowledge, a passion for research and great business acumen were combined. Therefore, discovery did not satisfy him, as it was necessary to find practical applications for them. And one of these applications was to be facilitated by a great industry: the separation of the air to obtain oxygen, whose most immediate use was the autogenous welding of metals using a blowtorch that burns oxygen and a combustible gas. In 1904, Linde created the Vereinigten Sauerstoffwerk in Berlin and established a relationship with the owners of the French Fouché welding company, the first to get the patent in 1901 using acetylene as the combustible gas. REPRESENTING LINDE REFRIGERATION MACHINES From 1894, Isidro Abelló was the representative of the Societat de Màquines de Gel, Linde system, in Spain. The contract is dated January 6 th 1894, the day it was signed by the Germans, and February 20 th , when Isidro Abelló did so, in Barcelona. The document is hand-written and in French, which was to be the language that Linde and Abelló used in their personal and professional dealings. When the contract was sent to be signed, the German company accompanied it with a letter in which it specified that “it will come into force under the management of Folch, Albiñana i Companyia”, namely the refrigeration installations, mentioned in the previous chapter, of what was the first industrial ice factory in Catalonia and Spain. The contract reads as follows: “Between the undersigned: on one hand Señor Isidro Abelló, engineer, in Barcelona (Spain), and on the other the Linde Ice Machine Company, in Wiesbaden (Germany), the following has been agreed: 1. The Linde Ice Machine Company grants its representation to Señor Isidro Abelló, authorising him to purchase and take payment for the orders for Linde system refrigeration installations destined for the Kingdom of Spain or the Spanish colonies. Señor Abelló undertakes to deal with the sale of Linde system machines, to the exclusion of other systems, and to take the necessary steps so that the Linde Ice Machine Company may be the supplier, besides the machinery producing the refrigeration and the steam engine, of the other complementary elements. 2. As payment for his work, Señor Isidro Abelló will be entitled to: a. A commission of 7.5%, based on the normal sale price of the refrigeration machines, if the plans necessary for the installation (with the exception of the plans that have to be drawn up on the ground) are supplied by the Linde Ice Machine Company, and if Señor Abelló, the person in charge of the operation, takes charge of the direction of the assembly and the start-up. In the event of Señor Abelló, besides these tasks, also doing the plans and drawings, he will be entitled to a bonus of 10% on the normal sale price. b. A commission of 5% on the sale price of the steam engines and other accessories of the refrigeration installation. c. A commission of 3% on the price of the boilers.
