THE EFFECTS OF THE WAR he factory did not suffer any of the possible consequences of the war, Teither bombing or destruction of the machinery, so that after the entry of the Francoist troops it continued manufacturing as it had been doing throughout the war. But the five lorries they owned disappeared, requisitioned, presumably for the transportation of retreating troops. The problems, in any case, came due to the high level of liquid assets, and once the conflict had ended. During the Civil War, there had been two Banks of Spain and two currencies – the original Banco de España, in Madrid, and the Banco de España in Burgos, at the service of the Francoist government. Both issued new currency. The winners recognised as valid all the banknotes issued before July 18 th 1936 and considered illegal – worthless paper – those of the later issues by the republican Banco de España. As to the bank balances – credit or debit – a block was imposed on those arising during the war. During the last months of the war, the population hoarded all the notes of the old issues, while putting the new ones into circulation, perhaps because they could see what would happen to them, so that the money in credit in Abelló, Oxígeno-Linde – 20,500 pesetas – turned into a loss. But what was worse is that nearly 45% of their bank balances – 380,000 pesetas – were blocked, not available, until the authorities decided upon their value. As a consequence, Abelló, Oxígeno-Linde found itself obliged to ask for a loan of 500,000 pesetas from the Banco de España, giving as a guarantee its entire portfolio of Public Funds, amounting to 666,000 pesetas. To free up the balances in republican pesetas created during the war, their equivalence with pesetas from Burgos was sought. Both had suffered the effects of inflation, but the republican peseta more than the Francoist one. The so-called Larraz Laws were applied, bearing the name of the Treasury minister behind them. The idea behind these laws was correct, but the eventual relationship established between the peseta of the victors and that of the defeated was not. The republican currency was severely punished, devalued in relation to the Francoist more than it should have been. THE SECOND WORLD WAR BEGINS n September 1 st 1939 German troops invaded Polish territory, so OFrance and the United Kingdom declared war on Nazi Germany, by virtue of the commitments they had to Poland. Just five months after the end of the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War had begun. Despite the good relations between the Spanish and German governments, the situation was not exactly propitious for increasing the trading relations of a Spanish company with a stockholding of German capital, such as Abelló, Oxígeno-Linde. After a war that had affected one of the parts, here came another to affect the other. They were to be years of silence. The family of Richard Linde was especially affected by the Nazi regime and the war. Only two of his five children survived: two died on the Russian front – Helmut and Werner – and Gustav committed suicide in 1935 after returning from a Nazi labour camp. The third generation came in with Hermann Linde, Richard’s son, and with Johannes Wucherer, son of Rudolf.
